They’ve been letting the attempted murders go but calling the phantom high sticks very strictlyMost of the past decade by the time we've reached game 3 in beyond in the first round series they tend to start letting more go and calling it less tight. Thats not been the case this year though

I would like to see them be more consistent with the unnecessary stuff that can get guys hurt. Alexeyev got Gallagher in the face in G1 with a nasty crosscheck but Gallagher started it with crosschecks of his own — both should have gone to the box and Alexeyev probably should have gotten an extra minor on top but neither guy got anything. Those kind of interactions can actually hurt people and have no influence on the game. Demidov gave a nasty slewfoot to Tom Wilson which went uncalled. I am sure Habs fans have their own list of plays that they think were unnecessary and dangerous.
My opinion is that not calling things like that leads guys to retaliating because they feel if the refs won’t protect them, they need to protect themselves. Keep the big hits, let the guys battle, but call the extra bullshit more tightly. Much more entertaining and impactful to the game to see Wilson hit Carrier than it is to see guys crushing each other in the teeth with their sticks after the whistle.
It's all of this. Even as a neutral observer it's maddening.I think the standard is difficult to see. Games aren’t called the same. Even within games you see things not called that were called earlier. I think the biggest thing is the lack of calls on embellishments.
its been so bad that most players and coaches dont even bother arguing anymore.Like even in Edmonton's favour in the OT game Edmonton won, they missed a few blatant calls that would have gone Edmonton's way, so what do they do? Give the Oilers a questionable PP in overtime which ended up deciding the game.
Call the blatant ones, forget the rest. (Like there was a guy who chopped Connor Brown's stick in half. No call. Full trip on McDavid, a knee by Kane on Kempe, all sorts of real calls not being made.)
