Most of the past decade by the time we've reached game 3 in beyond in the first round series they tend to start letting more go and calling it less tight. Thats not been the case this year though

They’ve been letting the attempted murders go but calling the phantom high sticks very strictly

Remains the worst officiating & supplimentart discipline of the major pro sports.

Inconsistent within games, game to game and crew to crew.

DOPS completely inconsistent in how they levy, or don't, suspensions.

Literally seems like they make it up as they go.

I think the standard is difficult to see. Games aren’t called the same. Even within games you see things not called that were called earlier. I think the biggest thing is the lack of calls on embellishments.

"There are none so blind as those who will not see" might as well be the NHL's motto, so it's tough to assess them. But cross checks to the heads are becoming so normalised that it's kind of surprising even by the very low standards of playoff officiating.

I would like to see them be more consistent with the unnecessary stuff that can get guys hurt. Alexeyev got Gallagher in the face in G1 with a nasty crosscheck but Gallagher started it with crosschecks of his own — both should have gone to the box and Alexeyev probably should have gotten an extra minor on top but neither guy got anything. Those kind of interactions can actually hurt people and have no influence on the game. Demidov gave a nasty slewfoot to Tom Wilson which went uncalled. I am sure Habs fans have their own list of plays that they think were unnecessary and dangerous.

My opinion is that not calling things like that leads guys to retaliating because they feel if the refs won’t protect them, they need to protect themselves. Keep the big hits, let the guys battle, but call the extra bullshit more tightly. Much more entertaining and impactful to the game to see Wilson hit Carrier than it is to see guys crushing each other in the teeth with their sticks after the whistle.

Agreed, on this as a Habs fan. That Gallagher Alexeyev infarction is the perfect example. Gally gets two for roughing and Alexeyev get two + two for going for the face.

But I've watched probably 2/3rds of the 1st round games this year and it's just been terrible officiating across the board. It ain't some grand conspiracy like some think. The refs have been terrible/inconsistent. I've seen ticky tack interference called and dangerous stuff let go. That's the opposite of what we want.

Edit: I forgot about the Demidov one, more of a trip than a slewfoot imo. Still a penalty that should be called.

1 for sure.

As usual, they'll be looking right at blatant penalties and decide to not call, then they down the line call something stupid that shouldn't ever get called.

Like even in Edmonton's favour in the OT game Edmonton won, they missed a few blatant calls that would have gone Edmonton's way, so what do they do? Give the Oilers a questionable PP in overtime which ended up deciding the game.

Call the blatant ones, forget the rest. (Like there was a guy who chopped Connor Brown's stick in half. No call. Full trip on McDavid, a knee by Kane on Kempe, all sorts of real calls not being made.)

its been so bad that most players and coaches dont even bother arguing anymore.

I voted 2

Habs - Caps series has been awful. No homer stuff its been bad for both sides. No calls on plays that should be double minors at the minimum but calling phantom high sticks when it doesn't even hit the guy. The teams were warned that the refs were looking out for embellishment. Yet the diving continues and often works (yes on both sides)

They need to call the rules as they’re intended to be called. The “playoff rules” makes the refs choke on the whistle.

Let a team get 17 minor penalties and lose 12-0. That’s the only way to get bullshit out of the games.
