Rasmus Sandin 'a lot more comfortable' in latest stint with Leafs

The Maple Leafs defenceman talks about what's changed about his game recently, missing significant time due to a foot injury, memories of being drafted by Toronto, playing alongside T. J. Brodie, leaving Sweden for the OHL, the veterans on the squad, the physical adjustments required to play in the NHL, and his big hit on Blake Wheeler.

Most noticeable for me is that he is able to relieve pressure in the Leafs dzone by making good reads on the play and making good passes. He also had a nice long stretch pass from behind the goal line.

He also looked good on a odd man 2-1 rush by Vancouver. I thought he made the right decision to try to block the pass.

He did take a hard hit. But seems to come away OK.

I don't think he is sitting because he got too cute on the goal he was responsible for. I guess he will learn to make a simple play like chipping it up to Willy instead of doing the Engval turn back for no reason.

He went through the Habs PK like butter when they tried to defend the drop back on the zone entry and he just flew into the zone. I really don't understand why Reilly INSISTS on dropping back as if it's a law.

If you could combine Reilly's feet with Sandin's head...you would have a Norris winning D-man.
 
I doubt Keefe would sit him Saturday for a relatively poor performance against the Habs considering he was solid in his previous games, so much so he got promoted to the first PP.

This seems to be more Keefe giving players like Hutton and Noesen some playing time before the season ends and they're likely planted in the press box.

He wasn't very good in the previous Habs game either, he's made a number of bad reads and turnovers the last 2 games, love the offense and transition but defensive play has been a problem recently.

Hutton probably gives you safer minutes at this point and was the #1 PK option for the Ducks, which is an area we could use another guy in with Bogo out.

Wouldn't be surprised if Liljegren took his place either, he's been a better defender at the AHL level and it would allow Dermott to move back to his strong side.

I love seeing players like Sandin come in. It's not just the acquisition of a player, but what it does for the overall team.

Leafs haven't been bargaining from a position of strength. They had to over-pay.
eg. There's no way in hell the Leafs would sign Dion Phaneuf now for $7,000,000/season with all the no-trade clauses intact, either with or without a Salary Cap.

Today's difference?
  • We can attract other options. Leafs signed Phaneuf when Zdeno Chara was a UFA. Chara signed for less even. But at the time, would he of even answered the Leaf's call?
  • Prospects and depth. Sandin is direct competition for Rielly.
Sandin looked good for a game, but last night wasn't his best either. -1 in a 5-2 win and it could of been worst if Marner didn't single-handedly score that goal. However, he's doing enough to compete for a job, to get ice-time on the power-play, and to steal some of Rielly's thunder. Back to reality, Sandin is still a pretty green player in a position that rewards those with experience. Think a huge question is, who's going to do a better job in their own end? We don't need players who'll get us to a game 7 just to lose it. Tavares has shown excellent leadership showing his teammates that you can fight through the struggle but come out a better two-way player for it. Rielly needs to follow his example or he'll just let his teammates down. No more playing on a wing and a prayer, play the puck when you need to, play your damn position when it's needed as well.

The best scenario is the competition from Sandin is finally the motivation Rielly needs to elevate his two-way game and sign for a level-headed contract.

Did anyone here recognize the brilliance of Sandin on the Marner goal? Most fans wont see it.

Sandin brought 3 Canadian defenders around him, when entering the zone he cut to his left to move the LD more to the middle to open the ice up for Thornton. The Canadiens defenders surely saw Thornton there and Marner trailing but Sandin was playing poker and pretended he was trapped right before he passed. He passed it at the most perfect time as the LD tried to poke the puck it away getting a full commitment from him. All of a sudden 3 defenders are surrounding Sandin going wtf is happening.

Gained the zone then cleared an epic boulevard for mitch to waltz down.

All of the above. Rotate players on the bottom pair to keep everyone at playoff game speed. You’re gonna need 7-8 D for a deep run anyhow

Last year our injury depth was Marincin thankfully we’ve progressed lol

Burst right in to the zone, faked out all 3 defenders and gave so much space to Marner.

It’s just 3 games - I’d rather he be playing, but no biggie. Sandin/Dermott will very likely be the bottom pairing to start the playoffs, where decisions really get tough is when Bogo returns, assuming everyone is healthy then.

nash isn't drawing in next game. since leafs are in LTIR and not accruing space, there would be no reason to put sandin down now so that nash can come in a different day. keefe said that "it depends" if sandin draws back in or not, so the article is basically wrong.

hutton's caphit relative to sandin doesn't matter. hutton can't be demoted
