Rantanen vs Necas points race to end of season.

they traded for that player first, still a loss.... no matter how you look at it. they paid up to try and win it all and gave up before the playoffs. if he wasn't going to sign instantly as he was acquired then why make that move?

They started with a player they were certain wasn't staying long in Carolina, traded him for a player that they believed had a chance to sign long term in Carolina, then when that didn't work out, got a young player with longer term than both of them and two 1sts. And Taylor Hall as an added bonus

Good thing Carolina wasn't planning to even be competitive this year then :sarcasm:

To be fair to Rantanen, while playing with MacKinnon he was a 100+ point player. There's no doubt that playing with Nate was advantageous but the above would suggest that you could put anyone on that line and they'd score 100, which of course is untrue.

Imho, Rantanen was the perfect fit for the Avs and the Avs were the perfect fit for him. It was a win-win situation just like with LeClair in Philadelphia. Unfortunately for Rantanen, he let his agent overplay their hand and he ended up missing out on the chance to retire an Av and continue his legacy as a top-tiered superstar. This may sound crazy now, but this move may cost him a plaque in the HHOF one day... unless he regains his form as an elite producer.

Hopefully players like Marner take note and this is a wakeup call for some players to pump the brakes on their agents when they decide to go rogue and play hardball to their client's detriment. The grass isn't always greener... even in Dallas.

All that said, the trade has seemed to work out very well for Colorado. Watching them night in and night out, Necas has certainly added a much-needed dynamic to their lineup and he is the perfect fit there. Hopefully he doesn't pull the same act Rantanen did once his deal is up.
This is a really strange take. A pending free agent had an amount he wanted to get paid. He didn't pull anything.

It's not a strange take at all, unless we are pretending a hard cap doesn't exist in the NHL lol. Let's look at the facts...

1. The Avs have always been an "everyone needs to leave a bit on the table to keep the band together" organization. MacKinnon took less, multiple times, when he could have bent the club over the barrel.

2. MacKinnon was just re-upped, and Makar will be up soon. Rantanen and his camp know this. They easily see the forest through the trees. I mean, if the average fan knew he wouldn't get top dollar in Colorado, his agent sure knew.

3. The Avs publicly stated they were looking to "add" to team depth and continue competing for Cups. That comes with a price to some individual players... as Rantanen found out. How can you make the team better and deeper if the stars aren't willing to take less to do so? It's not fair, but blame the NHL and NHLPA for agreeing to a hard cap lol.

Does Rantanen deserve every penny he makes? Of course. Has he earned the right to fetch every penny possible as a UFA? Absolutely. But he, and everyone who was paying attention, knew he would need to take a nice discount to stay in Colorado.

My take only reflects Rantanen's own words post-trade. He said he was shocked, disappointed and wanted to remain in Colorado. Yet, he was not willing to leave enough money on the table to do so... or, imho, he actually WAS WILLING TO, but he didn't have control over his agent, who decided to leverage the Avs after helping their other client Draisaitl sign a massive $14 mil deal with the Oilers. That is a huge mistake or miscalculation by Rantanen, imo.

If Rants came out and said, "I know what I'm worth and Colorado just couldn't pay me that" then I wouldn't have my take. But he did the opposite... he said he was shocked and that he was willing to take much less to remain an Av. So. why didn't he communicate that to the Avs?? Or do we honestly think Colorado decided to move a fan-favorite and elite producer and teammate to save a couple hundred K?

Well Colorado is rumored to be one of the teams that will be setting an internal cap when the Cap rises above $100m....so yes that is quite possible

My answer is no but the Oilers once actually did this with Ryan Smyth.
Well, they're cuckoo for Cocoa Puffs because Smyth was a heck of a player. Funny story, though... a good friend of mine worked for the Flyers for years and always told me the Flyers coveted Smyth and tried trading for him numerous times!!

Well, if that is indeed the case... and they set their "final price" 200k less than what Rantanen wanted... don't you think he would have conceded that to stay in the place he wanted to be for the rest of his career? I know I would have. Which is why I continue to believe his agent went rogue and wanted to win a negotiation on principle... even if it was over 200k and the result left his client "shocked and disappointed."

sign and trade is a thing, CAR made a major mistake a downgraded pretty big, arent those both late 1sts? not great value imo

1. It was a sign and trade, so I don't understand that comment.
2. They're 2nd in the East and have won 7 of the 9 games after the trade. In the 14 games with Rantanen, they also won 7 games.
3. The 1sts are in future years (26 and 27) and thus could be late 1sts or could be high picks, depending on how Dallas does next season and/or the season after. But in all likelihood, those picks will be packaged for a talented player well before then

Got a link for that?

Wow. Just a troll comment right there. Out of the blue with nothing.

Here's the link to Elliote Friedman saying he believes the Avs moving Rantanen/not wanting to pay him more is partly due to an internal cap they've set. He expects more teams to do the same. It's near the end of this video. He talked about it more elsewhere too on his podcast but you can look for that if you want

Friedman doesn't know anything going on internally within the Avalanche organization, so I would definitely take that with a huge grain of salt.

He's not wrong very often these days. Especially around the Rantanen stuff he's been pretty spot-on for a while

Like I had said though, it's a rumor

I think you're stretching all of this quite a bit to find reasons to be upset with him. Why is it his fault and not the Avs?
