And that’s fine, Canes had to make a trade after not going to a SCF after making the playoffs for like 7 straight years. Hopefully Rantanen lights it up in the playoffs. Even if Rantanen walks this off-season Carolina will still be a playoff team next year.

Assuming Rantanen walks Carolina handed out one of the biggest returns for a rental in hockey, there has to be significant achievements to justify such a move.
Nah. There's too many things messed up right now. MacK, Makar and Necas are covering for many mistakes for now.

It is fine when you have players that can move in and the team won’t miss a beat. Canes made the playoffs in 2018-19 with a 37 year old Justin Williams, rookie Svechnikov, Michael Ferland, Lucas Wallmark, and Jordan Martinook playing in their top-6. This team is ever better now and is only adding top-6 talent, you’re telling me it’s not fine to lose those pieces in a trade even if it’s a fleece? The Avs is a team that should be scared for the future considering they are a one line team because Landeskog is injury prone and Nichuskin doing whatever he is doing. Their best prospects are Calum Ritchie, Gulayev, and Nabokov, the only way that their team stays afloat is through trades, zero home grown talent. Now I’m not saying that the Hurricanes aren’t losing this trade, I am only arguing that they haven’t gotten worse because they lost Necas and Drury.
A recently departed member of the Canes FO basically said that Necas had one foot out the door. They were so concerned with the threat of an offer sheet that they walked him to free agency with a 2 year deal.
To Carolina, the difference in term/control was just an extra year.

And that’s why they let him go. Why do people think Carolina would just give up a guy on pace for 100 for free. Seems like everyone forgot about what happened over the summer with Necas dad.

Only thing I, as an ousider, remember is that Necas asked about 10 million-ish on a long-term contract. Is that right, or am I mis-remembering?

Besides the monetary stuff, Necas and Carolina management had issues where he belonged long term as a player. Necas thought he was a center long term, Carolina thought he was a winger long term. Some infighting there as well. Could understand where Necas was coming from since Carolina's 2C long term was Jesperi Kotkaniemi and centers obviously get paid more.

Necas always seemed like he was out the door soon, I thought Saros for Necas made so much sense last year until Trotz shot himself in the f***ing foot with that awful extension for Nashville while having Askarov.

I don't think it's so much they were replaceable- well, Necas really- as they weren't in the long term plans. Both filed for arbitration last summer, and Necas had a whole trade saga being frustrated with his role that ended with several trades falling through at the last minute, including a rumored one to Columbus for the 4th oa pick (Necas didn't want to sign an extension at the time of the trade). He signed a 2 year deal you could read as a 1 year prove it deal to see if they could salvage the relationship, if not, trade in summer 2025. Puts into perspective why they traded him for what very well could be a rental.

Also, Marty (IMO) bet on himself, signed a bridge deal and is now on the Avs top line and will probably get paid very well in 2 years somewhere. It worked out well for him in my opinion. Eg. he turned down a Columbus trade and I think being on the Avs is better for him than being on the Jackets. Having said that, I welcome a Bruins trade.lol I'm an Oiler fan and want him out of the West.lol

No, it'll get chalked up to Brindamour's system being awful. Rantanen will get 11M+ on the open market regardless how his Carolina stint goes

Literally a handful of games and people have their minds fully made up about Rantanen being a flop and Carolina f***ing up by making this trade. Doesn’t matter that his Canes team has been ravaged by the norovirus since Rantanen showed up, guy isn’t allowed to get his feet under him or have a chance to acclimate to a new system or new teammates or anything. Doesn’t matter that he’s still looked dangerous and has created chances and opportunities and opened space for others or generally has made a positive impact since whenever he’s touched the ice. HFboards boxscore watches have made their swift and objective judgement.
Maybe we'll see it soon.
