Rantanen vs Necas points race to end of season.

“Ah, yes, scientifically speaking, 1 is a whole unit, brimming with ontological existence, while zero is a quantum void, a mathematical singularity where nothingness itself paradoxically exists. To claim 1 is 100% of zero is akin to suggesting that a photon has mass! The very nature of zero is that it represents the absence of any quantity, while 1 is a distinct, indivisible entity in the set of natural numbers. So no, 1 can’t possibly be 100% of zero, because that would imply the universe itself is a cruel joke, where the potential of zero is arbitrarily superseded by the certainty of 1.”

We don’t need actual facts getting in the way of a sportsbro’s joke!

NEEEEEERRRRRRDDDDDSSSSSS!
I absolutely love the part where Rantanen goals is quantum void

It has nothing to do with what you're saying. You just cannot scale 0. It's undefined. Multiplication as a group operation is only defined within the range ]0, inf[.

For a non-commutative multiplication operation, you cannot have 0 as the constant, at least if you want it to be bijective(generally desirable for scaling). The entire distribution would collapse onto 0.

He is but I was still surprised the Stars selected him over Makar.

It shouldn't have been a surprise, and no one can claim Dallas made the wrong choice at the time. Miro was the top defenseman of that draft class and Makar was still mostly unknown. A few teams started to clue in on Makar closer to the draft but he was still a major risk.

As an Avs fan going into that draft lottery, Hieskanen was my #1 choice. The Avs badly needed a defender like him at the time and I was so pissed they lost the lottery to a division rival who took Miro and the Avs ended up with some bum from the AJHL.

Funny how things work out. The Avs ended up with the best defenseman in the NHL who, IMO, is going to go down as the best in history - up to this point. The draft lottery saved the Avs from themselves as it was heavily rumored they would have picked one of Patrick/Hischier.

All the bad karma the Avs took from that 48 point season came roaring back to help them when those lottery balls were falling into place.

48 point season. That was bad enough. 38 points would have been…a nightmare. Anyway, I just wanted a D man. Talk about a happy confluence of events to get Makar.

Rantanen better shine in the playoffs. The Avs seem to have known something about him.
Rantanen is the type of player that you don't notice often but then you watch the scoreboard he already has a 3 points night. If someone can feed the puck to Rantanen he will be dangerous in the playoffs. I might get criticized by saying this but I see him as a poor man Matthews. Incredible finisher but not so much a playmaker. Not saying he's bad or anything I would gladly take him back but not at 12M$ to play in the same line as Mack.

Pretty much the definition of bigger than the team innit?
Potentially. If he really was offered $13+ then sure, take it, accept that youll be an 80 pt guy forever instead of 100+, be happy with it and maybe your team wins/,maybe it doesnt.

But I still dont think that is a cancer to the locker room to want to be in the best position for your own personal and team success given this UFA period is his only chance in his entire career to do it.

Obviously now we know he was blindsided by the Avs (assuming we believe what Mikko has said, which I do), took a few weeks to say WTF, then woke up and still was able to pick his team like he would at UFA, but helped CAR best he could in the meantime.

I wonder if he’s just an 80 point guy period when he’s not tethered to mack and makar.

Maybe he wasn’t sulking, he’s just not that good

I am leaning towards agreeing he will be in Dal because of their depth spreading it out. Car is more the dump chase, shoot anything and everyhting. Dal is more puck possession, wait for the high quality chances, which I think is why Mikko chose there.

But in general I dont think he will touch his MacKinnon numbers ever again.

I'm sure living in f***ing North Carolina had something to do with it
Maybe, but I would put Raleigh in the top 10-12 NHL cities to live in, but thats my personal opinion based on weather and economics. Toronto, Boston, DC, and NYC (Rangers specifically) are the only Northish teams I'd want to play for if I had the choice.

Well, considering outside of Colorado and Dallas, his preferred locations were apparently Toronto, Edmonton, and Florida, maybe he just prefers the extreme cold/heat instead of the moderate temperature NC has year round

Or maybe he wants to be fed by McDavid, Matthews or Barkov like he was fed by MacKinnon

Solid assessment from the new guy.

I think that his numbers will get better in Dallas as he learns the players, but you may be right that losing MacKinnon and Makar the biggest variable in this.

We have to remember that Rantanen hasn’t played with Heiskanen yet who is a game changer on the back end. The time and space (and obviously overall skill set) a guy like that running point brings will certainly bring Rantanen shouldn’t be overlooked.

If those cities are true, then it would throw my weather/economy theory out the window for a star player, but then DAL is not like any of those teams with a player comparable to Mac, McD, Barkov or Matthews.
