Georgiev is going to want a raise after a 40 win and 38 win season. He will be allowed to walk. And Sakic will sign or trade for a cheap backup to platoon with Annunen, while probably extending Annunen for 3 or 4 years as cheaply as he can if he performs this year.

There is no universe where I see Sakic trading for a goalie he needs to pay 12+ million for.

Except that isn't exactly true.

Sakic reportedly offered Grubauer $5.5m per year for 5 years, but Grubauer opted to sign a 6 year deal at the same cap hit with Seattle instead. This is what led the Avs to overpaying for Kuemper in the trade, as he was the only semi-capable guy with starter potential who was available.

Kuemper's season in Colorado was only his second career season playing more than 31 games. And he was trash in the playoffs, even before he got poked in the eye with a stick. And, he was already 32, which is right about when most goalies start to fall off (which he did). And he wanted a bigger money, long term contract. Sakic letting him walk was the only right choice in that situation, even before you look at the Avs cap situation.

And Georgiev should absolutely be allowed to walk. His wins are a function of playing behind that team much more than his play, and it seems pretty obvious that giving him a raise would be a serious mistake. And if Annunen doesn't step up this season, next season could see another short term deal for a backup with starter potential. Or maybe Nabokov gets a shot at it, assuming he comes over.

Whatever ends up happening, I'm pretty sure you're right that it won't involve a $12m goalie in Colorado.

If Rantanen had agreed to a contract below 12 aav, it would have been signed by now. He might even get/hold out for a higher aav than Mack, because of starting his new contract later/higher cap.

This is very misleading. By nearly all accounts at the time Grub was expected to re-sign in Colorado after they used their goalie protection slot on him in the expansion draft despite being a pending UFA. Him signing in Seattle was definitely not part of the plan and that lead to the semi panic trade for a starting goaltender in Kuemper.

It’s Mack’s team. Mack loves Mitch. Toronto had rantanen on their list if Mitch went to Arizona we were trading back to try to get him.

Of course both players are going to sign. And fit better on their own teams but it would be interesting if neither wanted to sign sith their clubs.

I think it's too hard to determine what a trade might look like right now. Needs change throughout the season. Who knows where most teams will end up.

The only thing that would make sense to me is a swap with someone in similar value with a good value contract. Someone like Brady Tkachuk?

I was think something around Necas+ from Carolina. His contract talks didn't go well by the sounds of it before signing a 2 year deal. Carolina gets a star and can play with his finish buddy Aho. They'll have the capspace with Orlov and Burns coming off the books next summer. Avs get a speedy winger in Necas who has potential to do more.

I could see this as well. I think Rantanen is clearly on a different level than Necas but Carolina has plenty of quality prospects to add to even it out. Avs could use a couple good prospects.

What is the rule on offering the 8th year? I know another team that doesn't trade for him or his rights can't sign him to the extra year, but if he stays with the Avs, doesn't sign an extension, and hits UFA then finds out Avs are offering the same other teams are, can he still sign 8 years in Colorado a week into the free agency period? I feel like players have done this but I'm not sure.
