Not necessarily, it would depend how they would choose to use his current $9.25M in cap space that he currently occupied.
They won't be getting anything that replaces a 100+ player

As much crap as Mikko gets here he is an elite talent regular season or playoffs. There is no UFA signing that will do better or an equal trade target either.

Best case scenario if he walks. They spend the money brilliantly to fix the roster holes and become a deeper team. That plan only works though if CMac really delivers and lets just say I don't have any faith there.

In other words, it doesn't work.

Also no chance that this is the goalie tandem they start the season with.

No chance is hard to say. A trade of Colton or Girard takes care of the problem. Also, Landeskog might not be back.

Why is Rantanen the first to go?

A trade of Colton or Girard may solve one problem. But that simply causes another problem. Who is going to play 3D? Kylington? DeHaan? Similarly, is this team going to win a cup with Parker Kelly at 3C? And where does the money come from to pay for a decent goalie?

The salary cap was specifically designed to prevent a team from loading up a line like 9296 - which costs $32M per year - if that team wants to win a cup.

I have the feeling both Girard and Colton are "showcased" this season.

We are still only one (1) player from solving all the problems. Maybe Ritchie, Ivan X2 or Behrens (or Nabokov) is the one that push us over the top. Trading Colton might be better, though. In which case we "get" Landeskog or similar. And might be able to sign Georgiev for 2 million (he's still 0.9 in the playoffs) and maybe trade for Alnefelt or similar for depth. Imagine all of Annunen, Nabokov and Alnefelt next season. Three very talented "options".

For THIS season we are forced to use Landeskog only in the playoffs. In which case we keep both Girard and Colton. Question then is what we can get at the trade line for, say a secondrounder and a thirdrounder.

NEXT season: (when Landeskog and Wood gives their lines "character" (no Colton etc.)

Drouin - MacKinnon - Nichushkin
Lehkonen - Mittelstadt - Rantanen
Landeskog (or similar 7.0) - Ritchie - O'Connor
Wood - Ivan - Kovalenko
Kelly - Wagner

Loosing any of our top 4 defencemen will cripple us. There's no way G, or Manson, are traded.

Come on Bender, we aren't getting a player or two players better than Rantanen at $9.25m.
I mentioned during the summer that the Avs could make a swap with the canes for Necas +. That was before he signed his 2 year ROR deal.

I even said that sure, you'd lose a bit on the scoring end of it but he would probably not be looking at a $12M per year payday like Mikko is either and on top of that, you'd get younger.

Now Necas looks like he's on his way to a career year and I doubt the Avs trade Mikko at this point because the summer was the time to do it.

Basically, I just wanted to respond to the whole "oh no, the Avs will be completely screwed if we don't re-sign #96"... because it's not you don't have Mikko and you also can't use the cap space...it's not both.

When you do use the cap space, it's likely going to be on something pretty good as well.

I'll copy my post from the rumours thread

I'm as sceptical about giving him a large amount of money as any of us but 8x12 for Rantanen seems like a baseline we should have accepted ages ago. If he does leave several people should lose their jobs.
I feel as if the fan perspective of cap hits is more about symbolism than anything else - how much he's paid relative to other players, relative to teammates, as if his hit exists in a vacuum. Maybe I'm projecting there. But if he's paid less than MacKinnon then that's reasonable, and if he's paid less than MacKinnon it's going to be perfectly manageable (well, relatively) in the years going forward.

Of course all this goes out the window when Makar's on 15 million a year but we can deal with that when it comes.

Even 12 seems awful high to me. I understand no one else really cares what it looks like 2+ years down the line, but for some dumb reason, I do.
You will like it when the deal starts with 12, is below MacKinnon, and at the same time Marner will blow past Matthews for 13.5Mx8

Unironically, this Leafs fan knows how to re-tool the Avs core and still have a chance to win before Mack and Makar are too old.

He's not wrong. You don't need three game breakers. But if we exchanging Mikko's cap for a good goalie and a decent second line winger we will need consistent secondary scoring to compete for the Cup. If the only two game breakers are on the ice at the same time, we will really need contributions from those playign the other 28 minutes of the game.

Considering how injury prone/retired/suspended our entire top9 is besides Mikko and Mack good luck if Mikko is gone 🫣

When has Mikko ever been injured... You get what you pay for, hes on the ice week after week.

The problem isn't figuring out what we need, the problem is where to get a real good goalie. There's about 10 in the league.

We don't necessarily need a Top-10 goalie in the league. We'd be fine with a guy who's in the 15 to 25 range... as long as they are just consistent.
