Tavares is not making Team Canada lol
Teams were based solely on play this year. And he's 4th amongst Canadian forwards in goals, 11th in points, one of the best face-off men in the league. Based on this season he deserves to be there.

Next year different story, where he may not be a good fit for Canada. Same with Brad Marchand.

How can the USA be above Canada when they haven't won Olympic gold since 1980?
1996 was the last big one for the US at the senior level.. a legit World Cup too with real teams. your point stands though. FTR.. i have no idea how the US have not won a senior gold since 1996. That is an anamoly to me kind of like Sweden winning 98% of their round robin U20 matchups, dominating everyone and not having a gold in over a dozen years.

Why’s Russia listed? They won’t be allowed to play, and even if IOC lets them in, other nations, including Sweden, will refuse to play them until they’re out of Ukraine and stop pointing nuclear bombs at us.

Because the term Olympic Level is typically synonymous with Best-v-Best (when NHLers play). The point of the thread appears to be ranking A teams.
It also allows for more hockey discussion when Russia is included in rankings.

1. Canada
2. USA
3. Russia
4. Sweden
5. Finland
6. Czechia
7. Switzerland
8. Germany
9. Slovakia
10. Denmark

A distinct majority of North American hockey fans have no clue about anything happening outside of the NHL, hence their view on teams outside the top 6 is pretty much worthless.

Having a couple of good NHLers is nice, but ranking an entire team of 20+ players based on those very few names you've heard about is a little absurd. This largely explains Slovakia or Denmark being ranked so high.

IMO, and the opinion from the IIHF and other federations, Russia should not even be discussed when it comes to sports etc.

The IIHF and other federations have no right to ban discussion, thought and freedom of expression.

Prohibiting any and all Russian hockey talk because it doesn't conform to your political beliefs is not only absurd, but dangerous.

Nobody is saying otherwise. I was merely taking issue with the absurdity of banning all discussion about Russian hockey for political reasons. It's pure copium.
Not really. In hindsight, I don’t think anyone would discuss German players or their team to the Olympics in 1939 either

Just for historical accuracy, in 1939 it was actually the Allies that got sidetracked from international hockey. Germany kept playing until 1942 and was formally banned in 1946.

On paper Switzerland is easily ahead of Slovakia and perhaps even the Czechs. That's a legit NHL level first line + first pairing.
It's close for sure.. 3-2 game.

We don't have a Josi and you do. That is your huge edge. But I think Hronek and gudas is not an awful counter. I would guess that Josi has more points than the entire czech NHL roster lol

I think pasta and Necas can hang with your top players. They are both .ppg last I checked. No Swiss guy is at .ppg today. Zacha and hertl don't seem that far off either. Our top 3 are 50, 45 and 29. Top 3 Swiss forwards are 36, 29 and 28. So the best Swiss forward would be 3rdh for us.

You don't have an NHL goalie.. we have a bunch of those. Schmid has played one game this season. He's played less than Dobes who is our 8th goalie.

Our depth is deeper..

20 players and 8 goalies with at least an NHL game. 28 total.

10 swiss players have suited up and 1 goalie. 11 total.

I do agree it's close.. not sure I'd say better though.

If I had to pick the best 4 players in that matchup.. it'd be Josi, pasta, Necas and dostal. BUT I have a bias.lol

Interesting... Who the heck were they playing?
1940: Bohemia & Moravia, Yugoslavia, Hungary, Sweden
1941: Slovakia, Hungary, Sweden, Italy, Switzerland
1942: Switzerland (2x), Hungary, Italy, Slovakia

In both 1940 and in 1941 the main event was the International Week of Winter Sports in Garmisch-Partenkirchen (in place of the cancelled 1940 Olympics), in 1941 Berliner SC also participated in the Spengler Cup in Davos and there were a lot of exhibition games especially between German and Swedish teams until 1942. After that only against Hungarian and Slovak teams until 1944.
