If you consider last season and only last season, I can understand why Matthews gets the nod over the other two.

If you consider Makar and the Stanley Cup in which he was arguably the most crucial piece for the win, he would get the nod.

If you consider the entirety of their careers and the fact that Drai has hit 100 points three times (COVID shorten season robbed him of one), he gets the nod ahead of the other two.

Based on above: Drai/Makar > Matthews

In terms of raw talent it’s matthews, makar then drasaitl. however when you add in intangibles like character, will to win, it’s the reverse of drasaitl, makar then matthews. Matthews has shown he does not have the maturity and character to help a team win a cup. He hasn’t shown he can help lead a team to a playoff round win! Here’s a fun stat. Eichel, matthews and Larkin have been #1 centers in the NHL for years , all Americans. Not a single playoff round win amongst the 3. Also another fun fact; no Stanley cup team has had an American as they’re #1 center.
You sound like Don Cherry. That take is just your xenophobia showing.

I’m from kingston Ont. I regard don cherry as a national hero.

Except for the American #1 center statement and now this one.

To that end, that is about as meaningful as no Canadian franchise having won the Cup since '93. Unless you want to make other silly blanket statements regarding nationalities.

Only last season? Matthews has been an elite player longer than Makar has. He has a 60+ goal scoring rate for the last 3 seasons combined.

Draisaitl, Matthews, Makar. Drai has peaked highest and shows up in regular season and playoffs. Makar shows offense but was pretty much a non-factor against Tampa.

Drai, Makar, Matthews if Matthews had anywhere close to the playoff production Drai had it would be much closer but gotta give to the center with insane production in both the regular and the postseason.

If I wanted to win a cup he'd be the last guy of the 3 by a noticeable margin. The other two are much bigger when it counts.

Makar

Matthews/Draisaitl interchangeable

One gets a rather substantial McDavid bump, would be a neat experiment to see the players switch teams

If I’m building a team I’d take Makar first.
Drai and Matthews are a toss up to me. The only hesitation with Matthews is his playoff production compared to the other 2 and his disappearing in key games. If he can get over that then I think he and Drai are about equal.

Matthews has nowhere near the playmaking and passing ability of Draisaitl who is the best passer in the NHL.

Drai elevates in big moments whereas Matthews wilts. What he did on one leg in the playoffs last year was ridiculous, set the single series playoff assist record with 15 in only 5 games against the Flames.

It’s insane the lack of recognition Draisaitl gets from the Eastern Canadian media.

Yes. But I also don’t want to undervalue Matthews. What he did last year was extraordinary. If he can overcome his disappearing act in big games then I think it’s a legitimate toss up.

There’s always that “if” with Matthews though whereas Draisaitl actually does it and did it one leg.

Draisaitl is 3rd all time in playoff point per game scoring behind only Gretzky and Lemieux.

Ya cause it’s not like the other players don’t play with their teams best players?

Draisatl has proven to be dominant away from McDavid many times

Silly take as usual

I'd like to see that, too. I think Draisaitl and Marner would work wonders together. Even if Draisaitl didn't have Marner, he'd have Nylander, who isn't exactly chopped liver. Both are a night and day upgrade over Yamamoto, who, rather than setting up Matthews for his wicked wrist shot, would fall in the corner and lose the puck.

Don Cherry is a beauty, but you did say:

"Also another fun fact; no Stanley cup team has had an American as they’re #1 center."

Since Modano won the cup as an American #1C, that would make this statement false.

Did eichel play on a crappy team last year? You had to go back pre cap era to find an American #1 center on a cup team….I said nothing that was false.

Mike Modano is a cup-winning American #1 center. So you're stating something, but certainly not facts, sir.

He probably thinks Nieuwendyk was the 1C because he won the Conn Smythe due to GWG (like Justin Williams), despite there being a better player who played significantly more.

Matthews > Makar > Draisaitl

Difference is so negligible between the 3, this is honestly a really good poll. Had a hard time putting anyone of these 3 last.
