It's mindboggling that 20% (and 20 voters as when I post this) think that Makar is 3rd.

To me he is a clear #2 and then it's a tossup but took Draisatal as he is more dynamic and better "overall" and I love the last 2 guys but Makar is special even among special players.

Makar really developed his game both ways last year, and playing him huge minutes a night is more sustainable as a defenseman than it generally will be for a forward

In terms of raw talent it’s matthews, makar then drasaitl. however when you add in intangibles like character, will to win, it’s the reverse of drasaitl, makar then matthews. Matthews has shown he does not have the maturity and character to help a team win a cup. He hasn’t shown he can help lead a team to a playoff round win! Here’s a fun stat. Eichel, matthews and Larkin have been #1 centers in the NHL for years , all Americans. Not a single playoff round win amongst the 3. Also another fun fact; no Stanley cup team has had an American as they’re #1 center.

If I was drafting for my team tomorrow...

Makar
Draisaitl
Matthews

... but I would be smiling ear-to-ear being able to draft any one of these guys!

Wasn't Drai injured in the col/edm series? The Denver arena was dead silent and grasping their breath everytime Drai touched the puck. The other 2 players don't have that kind of momentum.

Drai > Matthews > Makar

To me there's no question Drai should still be called the best. He's peaked the highest, and has been at that peak level the longest. Matthews was great last season - 2 years in a row in fact - but I still think Drai's best season is better, and definitely best playoffs too. He's been scoring at an incredible rate for many years.

Makar is obviously amazing, but I'd still rank him behind those two.

If you asked me which player has most value or most likely to have the greater career - I think I'd go Makar there. He's youngest, and also defensemen often age better than forwards.

That's a different question though isn't it?

I'd definitely rank Makar #1 if I was drafting tomorrow too. Whether it's going forward at current age, or at age 18. But if we're talking about best right now - as in for this season only - I think the other 2 have stronger arguments to be ranked ahead.

Hard to pick between Drai and Makar, both are amazing and step up in the playoffs.

Matthews needs to show he can consistently perform when it matters.

Mike Modano was the #1 center for 98-99 SC Dallas Stars and Eichel and Larkin have played on really crappy teams.

True Matthews has been snake bitten but until last season Drasaital and McDavid didn't really have any playoff success either.

I wonder if Modano is the only American #1 center to win a cup?

Seems a bit crazy tbh.

Did eichel play on a crappy team last year? You had to go back pre cap era to find an American #1 center on a cup team….I said nothing that was false.

Except for the American #1 center statement and now this one.

To that end, that is about as meaningful as no Canadian franchise having won the Cup since '93. Unless you want to make other silly blanket statements regarding nationalities.
