I don't care about goaltending. I don't care who it is. Hellebuyck will win the Vezina and just got absolutely Shreked. Goaltending is a roulette wheel.

The act of goaltending matters. The individual does not.

At least it can matter.

Coaches, not so much.

Everyone left is basically flawless. That's why I don't understand the hand wringing over being underdogs. Find statistics the Hurricanes aren't top 10 at. Same for Florida.

The NHL doesn't have that next tier that the NBA does. The Knicks are a bit better than the Pacers and should win. Then they play the Celtics who are much better than everyone else. Probably ditto for the Nuggets out West. If you have the best record, you're in that tier.

In the NHL, you're already at the highest level by the time you hit the second round, unless you draw a team that upset somebody. Any likely opponent left can win the Cup.

The difference is the amount of people playing. In basketball, 2 great players gives you a good shot of winning it. In hockey, that won't work.

The Canes had a lot of close games against the Islanders who barely made the playoffs. They lack physicality and we can beat them by playing hard nosed and fast. Just like we did all season. Rangers in 6. The morons at the Athletic at the beginning of the season with their "algorithm" of genius prediction had the Devils as bad ass mofos, these analysts at the Athletic talk a lot of shit but theyre seldom right. Were the billy bad asses this year and going to prove it to all the doubters.

I happened to see that both Laviolet and Brindamore ere not in the top three for the Jack Adam’s award. The 2best coaches in the league this season and have 2 of the top teams in the league not get consideration is beyond me. It is well deserved for either one.

Both teams are pretty much the same as last year.

Jack Adams doesn't go to coaches like that.

Legacy defining time for Panarin too.

Rangers swept a series where he was lukewarm at best no matter what his biggest pumpers want to tell you. They're going to need him to be way better from here on out and downright great somewhere along the way if they want to win this whole thing.

You're a champ of analytics, except when they don't support the bias that you have chosen to define yourself by.

Panarin's primary job is to drive offense. That's exactly what he did in the first round. Yet, you say he was below par in the first round. Either the stats are wrong or you are wrong. There is no third choice.

The beauty of your position is that you've set up that if the Rangers don't win the Cup, you'll blame Panarin. Since the odds greatly favor them not winning the Cup, you'll be proven right. If they do win the Cup, you'll explain that the Rangers won in spite of Panarin.

I think alot of people who are anti analytics just come off as idiots who can't be bothered to even do the slightest bit of research.

Even MOST analytically driven people will tell you that their models are biased towards teams like Carolina. They'll even acknowledge that they don't (or really cannot) take into account certain things (in this series case, the ability for the Rangers to absolutely manhandle the Canes physically if the Refs don't get overly involved) or that they overvalue attempts for in lieu of actual quality.

Does it mean that their models need updating/find a way to account for/more accurately weight certain things? Yeah it does. I've felt for a while that most models almost ignore special teams and while most of a game does take place 5v5, 99.9% of games have enough of a special teams impact where they can and do make a difference.

Does it mean your eye test is better? .0000001% chance that this is true.

So basically, the analytical prognostications are probably off and your eye test still sucks so shut the f*** up.
I'm that .0000001%

Not for nothing, but when I was in elementary school i wrote the Mars candy company expressing my displeasure with the amount of brown M&Ms in my pack...they sent me some coupons
now they'd cancel you and call you a racist

I am extremely concerned about this series. I just don’t like how we match up against carolina. our 5v5 is so bad and theirs is so good. and our complete and total random defensive breakdowns will kill us.

this will be an incredibly tough series. game 1 will be huge. I hope we play well.
NYR scored more 5v5 goals than CAR… the only metric that matters in the end.

Too much of the analytics can be boring for me. A lot of things that people take for granted nowadays weren't even a blip on the screen when I started following the Rangers back in the early 70's. In a way a devoted fan cannot get away very easily from his/her first years of immersing himself in this sport. It's like when you first fell in love and a lot of the shit that comes after is the annoying part......like for me all the marketing, the cap and all the analytics that just seem to get deeper and deeper from year to year. When I started following the Rangers you more or less just watched the games......the team won or lost and that was it. The players were getting f***ed over by the owners on salaries.....that was kind of changing before the cap was implemented when at least certain teams like the Rangers were spending loads of money but it's always been a billionaire's club and the cap is like socialism for the rich with ceilings on pay outs and guaranteed year to year profits for the owners and between the cap and analytics a fan nowadays pretty much needs a major in accounting and a minor in statistics. Not nearly as simple as just watching a game and enjoying it for what it is and some part of me is like f*** all this math.

I still say Rangers in 5. just as easily could be Carolina in 5-6.

The games will be tight. I just think we have a lot more difference makers.

Yes his 5v5 numbers were lower than expected during the regular season but the fact that he proves that he can elevate his game when the ice shrinks is a clear indication that the "pp merchant" crowd was wrong all season.

Players have down years. On top of that they had their first child. That can affect your rythm.
Zero, or completely disrupted, sleep every night at home really Fs you up in the first 6-12 months with a baby. I’ve been a zombie after having two kids in three years.

I still watch and enjoy the games. The rest is just noise around the edges. I don't care about stats that tell me what's going to happen because that goes out the window when the puck drops. Final score is all that matters now.

I’ve been dealing with the Vancouver/Edmonton series thread. It makes our series thread in the mains look like the peace corps group. Lol.

Add a Game 7 with Boston/Toronto. Oh boy! Lol
ok ok you're absolved, you can wait until later to put up the thread :sarcasm:

thanks for trying to keep this place sane, i'm sure it isn't easy

I loved how the Rangers played the Caps. Even when the refs called stupid penalties against us, or the Caps were losing their minds, they didn't stop with the physicality. I think in previous seasons, this team played a bit too timid in that aspect. Yes, Trouba laid out Meir last playoffs...in Game 7...in the 3rd...while this team was down by 3.

And the Canes have players who are already banged up.
