Rangers trade history

And he was injured or out a good part of that. Scored 5 goals one night against Minnesota (I think). It was like his 5th NHL game--right after being drafted. WTF! The guy looked like he was going to be a superstar.

Traded for Cam Connor...

Trading Kjell Samuelsson was a mess too, played 14 seasons after we traded him

not sure if its on the list but trading Rosival for Wolkski...

Rosival wasn't worth the $ but we traded a solid 4-5th dman and got back a bust. Trades like this hurt us, because we have nothing to show for it. You have to think that Rosival could have gotten us at least a bottom six roster player.

We got cap space out of it. Which at the time was something we needed. It wasn't a good trade and I liked Rosie, but it wasn't terrible either. I understand you point though.

What about Prucha/Dawes.. Morris? ugh...

Tough to be upset about that one. Neither Prucha nor Dawes are even in the NHL anymore.

Another horror. Ridley was a top notch second line center--excellent penalty killer. Miller was more the 3rd line type but he was really good as well and another excellent penalty killer. Those two guys gave the Caps quality seasons for years. Carpenter had had one great season and had wobbly knees---he sucked for us and if I remember right we traded him before too long to the Kings for Marcel Dionne who was on the verge of retirement.

Carpenter, through hard work turned himself into one of the best checking centers in the league with the Devils for 6 years

This. Rosie would be a decent 4/5 but not at the $5M he was earning. Plus via Wolski he did return Florida's 3rd which is the 2nd pick of the round.

The Rick Middleton trade was an unmitigated disaster. 23 year old Middleton goes on to score 400+ goals for Boston while aging Ken Hodge plays a season and a half before being sent down to the minors ala Redden.

I know we got Noonan and Matteau in return, but I still feel bad about trading Amonte... He was one of my favorites at the time

At the time most on here thought Sather had just made another 'steal' trade and that we were clear winners

Lisin was a dog, two teams gave up on him in 3 years, yet our guys thought he was worth trading a very serviceable LK for. He would have been a good player under Torts, still don't get it, even if it was about money.

Tyutin for Zherdev pissed me off then and still pisses me off now. I have no problem with trading Tyuts (much like the MDZ situation we have now) for a top 6 winger, but it had to be for a reliable winger, which Zherdev was anythinh but

WE had a surplus of Dmen and Zherdev was one of the best names being dangled at the time. Made sense, Zherdev is a head case, that was always the case since his draft year.

Does anyone know who was high up on the Rangers draft board in '05 (aside from Staal obv)?

I was always curious if they would have stayed at 16 (and kept 41) who they might have targeted there.

If they went D again, I'm guessing they would have gone with Parent or Lashoff.

41 might have been interesting if they'd still take Sauer at 40. Wonder if they would have considered Stasny.

It would have been Bourett like most have said.

I liked Sauer, but didn't like the 2nd round pick. Sauer had injury problems and his older brother was already suffering with some bad injuries in the pro's, I knew there was something to all that. In the end, I was right, though I wished I wasn't.

Would have taken Stastny or Latendresse.

My favorite was the Pavel Bure trade.... too bad he got hurt. Imagine if he was still able to play. One of the few stars that played well here although it was the dark years.

Bure trade was not good. That was the time we should have been adding more youth, that team was going nowhere and we already had enough veteran players on their last legs. Another situation where the prospect cupboard was bare yet we continued to add players thinking we could make a run. A run at what, 8th place ? Couldn't even do that, yet we were WASTING 1st rounders on guys that made their bones years before on better clubs.

Date March 7, 1989

Buffalo Sabres acquire:
1990 5th round pick (#97-Richard Smehlik)

New York Rangers acquire:
Lindy Ruff

Horrible trade, yet we had 3 5th rounders that year, we took a guy named Sergei Zubov with the first pick in round 5.

June 2, 1978
Philadelphia Flyers acquire 1978 1st round pick (#7-Ken Linseman)
New York Rangers acquire right to hire head coach Fred Shero

Well that's certainly an interesting trade. Could that even go down in today's NHL?

IDK if a trade for a coach happens like that now, not for a first round pick. We've done that twice that I know of - Shero, then almost ten years later for Bergeron. That pick ended up being Dan Dore, not Sakic like some thought. Sakic was taken with the pick they aquired by trading Dale Hunter to the Caps.

Sidenote - Quebec could have added Selanne and Roenick to that great group of players they were stockpiling in 1988, instead they took Dore and Leschyshyn.

The Rick Middleton trade was an unmitigated disaster. 23 year old Middleton goes on to score 400+ goals for Boston while aging Ken Hodge plays a season and a half before being sent down to the minors ala Redden.

Espo and Cherry alluded to the fact that Middleton needed to get out of New York or "he would have gotten into trouble". Something along the lines of hanging out with the wrong crowd, drugs, alcohol, etc. He did stay out of trouble in Boston, and his prime was absolutely HHOF-calibre.

That's the only tidbit that could explain trading him, but the irony is that Murdoch ended up being that guy they warned of. He was the guy they figured could take over for Middleton. Murdoch had scored 170 goals in 140 games for Medicine Hat the two seasons before he arrived in NY. Such a waste of talent....

Agreed.

Although the trade that sent Ridley and Miller to Washington for Bobby Carpenter was a real gemstone too.

Probably the worst after Middleton, but its close. I was 13 at the time, I remember being really excited we were getting a 50 goal scorer :shakehead.

Knuckles Nilan acquisition, started turning this franchise in the right direction, he and Joe Patterson fought us some respect

Yet another example of getting a good player on the downside of his career. Started to flame out his last two years in Montreal.

This was bad too--losing Norstrom was the worst. Solid no nonsense defenseman for a long time.

Not only was he a good dman, but the kind of stay at hom the team sorely missed going into the dark years.

Didn't like the Eddie Mio trade to the Wings either

I liked him on the Rangers, but he was done after that trade. Vanbies was waiting in the wings.

Trading Kjell Samuelsson was a mess too, played 14 seasons after we traded him

Traded him with a 2nd rounder to Philly for Bob friggin Froese !

My saddest transaction, my hero, Eddie Giacomin waived to Red Wings in 76

Nilan brought us respect, which we lacked for years...Bob Froese, definitely up there with the Rick Middleton trade

Surprised the Leetch trade hasn't been mentioned yet. Traded on his birthday no less. Sacrebleu.

Didn't we also 'trade' Keenan to St Louis for Peter Nedved?

I think that 'respect' is inflated by Ranger fans. Those teams were not only soft but probably the 3 worst teams the Ranger's iced in a decade. Rangers had some good young fighters the years before with McPhee, Tinordi, Brubaker, Caufield. Problem was we traded them all, sans McPhee who broke down way too soon.

In hindsight, we should have gotten a better return. Trading away a multi-dimensional Korpikoski for a one dimensional speedster, just a bad hockey move.

I don't think it is classified as a trade, wasn't it like, a reward ?

Here is a fun challenge for anyone interested. What is the longest running trade in NYR history? For example, Ryan Wilson and Paul Stastny are the players currently on the Avalanche who can be traced back to the Nordiques/Flyers Lindros deal.

Kjell Samuelsson 14 years?

December 31 1987. If we knew then what we know now. Buffalo drafts Mogilny with the 5th round pick. On a side note theres a TON of names I forgot about. For the younger guys on here, go youtube joey kocur and watch a little ball of thunder absolutely break someones face. In my opinion he was the most entertaining fighter ive ever seen.

Kjell Samuelsson 14 years?

Think you misunderstood. :)

Yes, Samuelsson played 14 more seasons after being traded away from the Rangers. But I'm asking what is the longest running asset the Rangers have had. For example:

Kent Nilsson
Drafted by Atlanta in 1976
Reclaimed by Atlanta from Winnipeg prior to Expansion Draft, June 9, 1979.

Traded to Minnesota by Calgary with Calgary's 3rd round choice (Brad Turner) in 1986 Entry Draft for Minnesota's 2nd round choice (Joe Nieuwendyk) in 1985 Entry Draft and 2nd round choice (Stephane Matteau) in 1987 Entry Draft, June 15, 1985.

Traded to Dallas by Calgary for Corey Millen and Jarome Iginla, December 19, 1995

37 years. :naughty:

I know we got Noonan and Matteau in return, but I still feel bad about trading Amonte... He was one of my favorites at the time

Me too.

I still have the hockey card that had Tony Amonte, Doug Weight, and Steven Rice in the water at a beach somewhere with jerseys on and hockey sticks lol

I was a huge Amonte and Weight fan.

Yeah I think we swapped Esa T for Nedved as some sort of compensation for letting Keenan go. We should have hammered them for tampering. If Lou Lams was GM he would have went for the throat.

Kocur easily had some of the best fights I've ever seen, especially on those Detroit teams that had Kocur, Probert, Mckay and a young Adam Graves. Then later on when Detroit had Grimson, Primeau and Mccarty. The best home games back then outside the local rivals were those Detroit games, always some of the most anticipated games of the season. Domi vs Probert, all time classics.

Amonte and Weight were great right away, especially Amonte. Weight could hit and take draws like a pro right off the bat. Amonte took RW next to Mess and never missed a beat. I still think we could have kept one of them, I would have preferred Weight.

I think Neil Smith was just happy Keenan was gone, and he was always a Nedved fan. Plus I think if he pursued anything further the hammer would have dropped on Detroit as well, Neil's alma mater so to speak.

Count me as someone who saw that as addition by subtraction.

Rosie was a trooper and filled in as our "top defenseman" to the best of his abilities for a while, but I was glad to see him go. His "puck-possession-no-matter-what-reverse-reverse-chase-pass-reverse..." mentality bled into the rest of the D and got them pinned into their zone time after time.

Our defensemen's bad habits pretty much disappeared after he left.

Assuming the rumors were true. Never bought into the idea of Detroit ditching Scotty Bowman in favor of Keenan as GM/coach. But who knows. If anyone would know, it would have been Smith.

Either way for all of Nedveds faults, getting him for Esa should have been a steal. That Nedved/Zubov deal irks me more than any trade in the last 20 years, by a gigantic margin.
