As I expected, M-NTC with a NMC on top to avoid being sent down. The 2m signing bonus in the final year is basically a lock-out insurance.

We had the boots on and kept kicking when negotiating this contract. He took as much less as he did -- and didn't even get a NMC for 1 year. Its very unlikely, but say that we have a bad year, he might end up leaving up towards 20m on the table playing for someone else after the deadline...

Its a very NYR friendly contract, basically the most team friendly contract I've seen post lockout 05'.

I think the NMC and M-NTC are combined for the entire length of the contract

Personally, I like having the competition. I mean if everyone looks good, that's the kind of problem you want to have, really.

Generally I agree, but PMDs need to play a lot and get more offensive minutes. It would like be impossible for Ottawa to develop a RH PMD behind Karlsson with him getting all the top offensive minutes. Its one of those things that are hard to "prove", but over the years I've seen so many examples of younger offensive Ds not performing well behind top offensive Ds ahead of them on the depth chart. There are of course exceptions, but...

Alright guys. Today is the first day of my vacation and probably the last day I'll be able to post on the boards (likely out of cell and wifi range) until the 12th.

I'll say that I both love and don't love this. I mean, what's not to love about the term? And I really do like Shattenkirk a lot. I think he gets a bad rap because people think that a first pairing D is the same as a #1, forgetting you can be a first pairing D and be a #2.

The only thing I worry about here is the lack of space for the youngsters. How can we have Bear Gloves and DeAngelo both in the lineup at the same time? Of course, there will be injuries.

I also just want to give a little credit to RB and Larry Brooks, who had never been saying the Rangers weren't interested in Shattenkirk so much as the Rangers weren't interested in him at the term we all thought he would get. Well, they held firm and didn't give him that term, backing up their insight.

Great post and I agree all the way.

Further to this, lets not raise the expectations too high. That is not a jab at anyone or anything, but this place right now is exactly like it was when we signed Gomez and Drury or Brad Richards.

Just disregarding Shatty completely, in general, more or less all UFAs or new players on a team need a lot of time to acclimatize. There will be plenty of room for people to say "I told you so". Even if I wasn't in favor of getting Shatty and am not even that thrilled to get him on the deal we did get him, I am the first to say that when it comes to giving him time to learn his new team, we are not talking about 4 weeks. It takes a year or two. Especially for a PMD. To understand that, think about how good Hayes and Miller got at making that one pass to Grabner late in the year. That was one type of play for one type of player. A PMD need to learn to make 3-4 type of plays to like 9 different players. To a large degree the fundamentals will there, but to really really perfect it. A guy like Nik Lidström would have lost 25% of his game over night if he changed team, and it would have taken a year or two for him to get back to his full capacity with his new team no doubt. That was so obvious when Lidström played for Sweden in International Games.

Just saying, expectations should be low on Shattenkirk the first couple of months at least. Don't expect any wonders. The X factor is the PP, if he does well on it he might get pts early which would help him to get warm.

What's really funny is that some of these were real conversations back in the day, and not just among fans.

I remember an article in THN discussing how the Wendel Clark trade was huge for the Nordiques because it finally gave them a real leader as opposed to Sakic. People almost forget how maligned Yzerman was until he was in his 30s.

My memory of Yzerman was his being the best player in the NHL, aside from the 2 hockey gods.

As much as I despise Crosby for his antics, there's no way in hell I would ever advocate trading him away from my team. Same goes for Malkin.

His antics are ********. His first couple seasons he seemed like a brat. Since then he has been as good an example as you could want on your team.

I know it's cool to hate him, but it makes no sense to me. I just wish he had always been a Ranger, like everyone else here, even if admitting that makes some feel unclean.

Was it really worth dumping Stepan to sign Shattenkirk? Now we have a huge gaping hole in the top 6 that we are plugging up with a 40-point dman?

I don't get it at all.

I prefer Shattenkirk and a hole to Girardi and Stepan.

We will have to wait and see but it really was not just us swapping Shatty for Stepan. At worst it was Shatty and the #7 pick for Stepan (with Ranta going for DeAngelo).

Couldn't agree more about Sid. For the first time in my fantasy hockey league (this year was our 7th season) I had Crosby this season. Along with Kessel, Schultz and Guentzel. So I watched nearly every Penguins game outside of the nights the Rangers weren't playing. Crosby gets mauled on a night to night basis, and he dishes out about a 10th of what he gets.

Sid was so damn greasy this year. Nearly every goal he scored was in the immediate area surrounding the crease either on a rebound or re-direct. Barely any snipes.

Rangers could learn a thing or two, especially on the power play. Enough with the cross ice passes looking for the perfect bang-bang play. Just get bodies in front (Kreider, I'm looking at you here) and get the puck on net and generally good things will happen.

Just look at the late Brassard goal that tied Game 5. Bodies in front, throw the puck on net, Brass bats the rebound out of midair and hits off 3 seperate players before crossing the goal line. And bang. Series over.

Defensemen like Shattenkirk are in in today's NHL. Slow defensemen like Staal and Girardi are out.

Speed and transition is how you win. It all starts with being able to move the puck from the back end.

That is why I drool all over defensemen like Brodie and Leddy.

Yes sid never spears people...slashed fingers off...goes for the nuts....slew foots....nneeeevvveerrrr does any of that.
