If it means anything, I'm not overly thrilled with the pick. Kinda puzzling that they took Iverson with his teammate, Chase De Leo (a guy who plays a much bigger role for Portland), still waiting to be picked. Not only that, but De Leo's scouting report IMO reads better as well.

I like Iverson quite a bit more, in all honesty. Chase is a solid kid, though.

To me, the most important things to look for in a prospect are skill and smarts. Reading Iverson's scouting report, he reads like a guy who isn't a plug, but he doesn't possess a high amount of those attributes.

It definitely seems like the Rangers mainly valued him because of his physical attributes. Not sure if that's the best way to draft.

In 2-3 years any doubter is going to fall in love with Iverson the same way we all fell in love with Callahan when he was called up with that #43 for the first time.

Big fan of this pick not surprisingly. Should Iverson develop, players like him always seem to be difference makers in tough playoff series.

You're the only one who doesn't like this pick. That should tell you something.

Iverson is better than just about anyone at that spot.

If you were in our draft room, you'd only take skill guys and ignore every other facet. The Matt Millen of NHL drafting.

I don't care for either of the first 2 picks to be honest. And I'm on record as not being in love with what our scouts/draft team has done recently..to me, this is more of the same.

I'm familiar with iversons game and he's an impressive physical specimen for sure. Built like a tank and has an edge
.all good attributes that make him an attractive 3rd line type guy. I would have preferred some more offensive upside with the pick.

See, we need an infusion of skill in this organization. I love iversons willingness to engage and he is different than what we have in the system.

But like Mcilrath is different, this guy brings some anger and grizzle with him but is there much more than that when he becomes a pro ? And why reach for him there ? I'm not sold.

There were better choices imo.

Don't even get me going on pick 59. :shakehead

If an 85th overall pick becomes a regular 3rd liner that bring something this organization does not have and is competent offensively, that's a home run in my book.

Reach for him? Wasn't he supposed to go much higher than this spot?

They took all skill last year. They took a couple of skilled defensemen this year.

Not a fan of this pick nor our prior pick.

This kid is a decent prospect. Good on ice attitude and some flash of scoring but he doesn't project to be a top 6 kid and there were better players available. His hands are just ok. More n/s type game with little creativity.

We go goal with pick 1 which is an absolute miss and here we go 3rd line ceiling kid with so so offensive upside.

I do like the igor pick. Very athletic competitive kid. Would have loved him as our only g pick and gone dom turgeon out of Portland or the Finn lammikko who looks like a younger Joel armia. Both better organizational choices at 59.

At 59 we had a top 60 kid available and we took not even the best goalie let alone bpa.

Our drafting Just makes me shake my head.

Shake your head as you will, but we just went to the Final and two years back the Conference Final. At what point do the armchair GMs acknowledge the team is at least doing something right? Regarding your north south comment, we pretty much just lost to it in the Final: a big, hard working team that goes to the dirty areas without the puck, battles, takes hits, and scores an awful lot of blue collar goals.

If he was Russian he'd love him.

Keegan Iverson Portland LW
Protoypical power forward found a way to contribute at key times. Provided muscle on a kid line
that held its own. Quick skater clears out space driving to the net. Uses body well to shield the
puck as he gets more comfortable the closer he is to the net. Capable of drilling guys hard, evading
checks while carrying the puck, and showing offensive bursts you don’t expect from guys with his
type of profile. A simple, nastiness to his game should progress in ’14.

Potential graduations of Leier and Leipsic will put the puck on Iverson's stick a bit more this upcoming season. He needs to step into a more prominent role and turn those flashes into a consistent display.

FWIW, IMO, Iverson has Lucic-like potential. He has better skating at the same age compared to Lucic. Doesn't drop his gloves nearly as much, but he hits just as hard and is a nasty MFer when he needs to be.

His top end is legitimate Lucic-like potential. Now, a lot has to happen for him to hit that, but his play is reminiscent of Lucic's.

Who here wouldn't take a Lucic like or lite? lol

These St. Louis Park kids are getting a name for being rough and mean and you're seeing a lot more of them in junior hockey/NCAA D1 now. Iverson's got an older brother Wesley who's going to U Wisconsin-Stout (D3) and is basically a less-polished Keegan too. I like the Lucic comparison in terms of their temperament and the mean-streak they can have. It was mentioned earlier that the Rangers just got beat by a team that's very North-South and physical, and I think it was a hint to the organization that they really can't handle how tough the Western Conference teams are. This kid isn't a goon or a waste of a pick by any means, he's a power forward with huge upside that I'd guarantee is a fan-favorite soon enough.

haha. stop jon, er...... bird.

our track record with "power forwards" isnt very good.

first, you are really reaching with that comparison. i mean, who wouldnt want a lucic on their team ? thats a pretty easy guy to hope your kid turns into. problem is, lucic is very unique. hope you are right though.

i remember you were drooling over biggs and kassian at one point too..... remember ? :naughty:

ive been around these parts a long time like you.

hope the kid develops and becomes a dominant physical player with some scoring. we sure could use that player.

iverson ?? he doesnt look russian to me.....

kreiders a power forward...looks like a future star in the making.

he is. possibly.

jury is still out on his scoring ceiling. he still doesnt seem like a natural goal scorer to me yet....

love the kids size and speed. hes an imposing player. down right scary. if the hands can develop, he will have a chance to be a perenial allstar.

i like his chances though.

I'm not "reaching" at all and the comparison has been made multiple times by multiple people. He hits just as much and just as hard. He skates better and has nicer hands at the same age. He doesn't fight as much, though. At the same age, I would take Iverson over Lucic. Question will be how he develops.

So because we haven't had a good track record we just shouldn't draft them? That's basically what you're saying and makes no sense to me.

Will he play top minutes in his 18 year old season or even his 19 year old season? just seems like Portland is always stacked with Junior superstars.

Portland has found their man to replace Mike Johnston

Jamie Kompon is expected to be introduced Wednesday (July 9) as the new general manager and head coach of the Portland Winterhawks.

Kompon will take over from Mike Johnston, who had been the Winterhawks’ GM/head coach since October 2008. Under Johnston’s guidance, the Winterhawks reached the last four WHL championship finals, winning it all in 2012-13. Johnston left the Winterhawks last month to sign on as head coach of the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins.

News of Portland’s interest in Kompon first surfaced in a Tuesday morning tweet from Steve Ewen of the Vancouver Province: “Hearing longtime NHL assistant Jamie Kompon as a possibility for the Winterhawks coach/gm gig. Has Stanley Cup rings from Chicago + LA.â€

A source familiar with the Winterhawks’ situation has confirmed to me that Kompon is their man.

First Cup for LA and Second Cup for Chicago.
