"If one or both of said teams shall cease to play their home games in said property at any time, the tax exemption provided herein shall cease immediately and such property shall immediately be restored to the tax rolls and thereupon become subject to taxation and shall be taxed pro rata for the unexpired portion of the taxable year"
I've read this is interpreted to mean that any home games outside MSG would trigger the clause but has there a court case specifying that it means any game or the common usage of the word? After all cease means "come to an end" or "discontinue", neither of which would be the case if 1 home game was played elsewhere. If it said cease to play all their home games..." I think it would be a lot clearer.

To be honest I don't think Ed Koch thought any of this through whatsoever when he gave that exemption. And he thought it was only for 10 years. But as people have mentioned the Rangers have played "home" games in Europe during that time. Wonder if that would be enough to void the exemption if someone with standing brought it to court

There must have been some wiggle room, say, if the league FORCED each team to play "home" games outside their own arena. It might simply come down to if a team chooses to play home games elsewhere or not.

I have an old article from the Daily News dated 2/25/97, which also discusses the tax exemption. Back then, the exemption netted $8.8 million in FY 1996. From 84-96, the City lost $89.1 million in tax revenue.

Even that is a bit ambiguous. "play their home games in said property..." Doesn't say all their home games, doesn't say a percentage. On the otherhand, it doesn't explicitly allow for an exception, so who knows. It is not an issue as they are road team, but it seems open to interpretation. My guess is MSG doesn't want to challenge the meaning of the stipulation considering there seem to be many that want the tax emption revoked and would rather not poke a stick into the hornet's nest.

July? That doesn't sound right

For the Knicks they will want to get this over with so they can start pushing ticket plans as soon as possible. That should last a week and once they're all geared up they'll just launch the Rangers process next. Wouldn't be surprised to be doing this by teh first week of June

Good morning,

I hope that you are doing well and that you enjoyed your weekend.

With the Liberty season underway, we have launched our major initiative, Libs4Kids, to send kids and their families to New York Liberty games this summer. I am reaching out because I need your help and I hope that you will be able to participate to help give kids and their families who otherwise wouldn’t be able to attend, the lasting memories of attending a professional sporting event. For as little as $100 you can send 10 kids to a game this summer.

Attached you will find an order form which you can fill out and send back to me. Feel free to call or email me to submit your donation or to ask any questions.

FAQs:
What is Libs 4 Kids?
· A program that enables individuals and companies to make donations; the donations provide kids and their families, who wouldn’t be able to attend otherwise, the chance to attend Liberty games throughout the summer.
· Some of the organizations we distributed tickets to last season include:
o Most Valuable Kids, Friends of the Children, Family Service League, Delancey Street Foundation

Tax Donation Letters
· Anyone who donates $1,000 or more will receive a tax donation letter. This letter will come directly from the organization who we received the tickets.
· This option is only available when donating to an organization of the Liberty’s choice.

Best Wishes,
Bryan Fried

Did they really have nerve to send that out again this year? Or is that from last year?

Very simple response:

"Hey Bryan, sounds like a great idea. But you don't need my help, just have MSG donate the tickets to those kids directly since you can't sell them anyways.

Best,
FutureCap
LGR!! "

You have a source on this? They had neutral site "home" games in 92-93 and 93-94. One was in Florida, think the other was in Halifax.

I think the interpretation of the exemption is for games that would otherwise be home games.

In 1992-93 and 1993-94, the NHL played an 84 game schedule where each team would play 2 neutral site games as per the league schedule. Madison Square Garden and the league would have no say as to where those games were played.

The Europe games/teams were announced prior to the release of the NHL schedule.

The outdoor games are actually part of the official schedule. Having the Rangers involved in an outdoor game and be called the home team within the NYC metro, which would otherwise be a home game would trigger violation of the exemption, IMO.

Not for nothing, but why wouldn't this just fall under something that Garden of Dreams would do?

Seems awfully patronizing and insulting to me at least.

This coming from a supporter of women's soccer too.

Not sure who greenlighted that effort to milk NYR and NYK STHs, but it's way out of line. The Knicks and Rangers bring in stupid money, concerts bring in stupid money, the WNBA brings in no money. The Liberty schedule at this point actually takes away potential concert and event dates. They are desperate to sell tickets and they can't give them away - literally (the Knicks once offered me 4 free tickets which I passed on).

So basically they try every which way to unload those dogs. Before the Knicks became a complete dumpster fire (between the Isiah years and the Phil years), there was a waiting list for season tickets. You were told, however, that you could get to the front of the line on the "VIP waiting list" if you agreed to sign up for Liberty season tickets. So people would buy those and essentially write off the entire package since you couldn't get 5 cents on the dollar on stubhub.

But then dynamic pricing arrived and it wasn't worth their while in the Knicks department to give up valuable season tickets when dynamic pricing gave them 25% to 400% more game by game. So back to square one, and some genius figured that "HEY! Let's give the liberty tickets away to Kids and stick NYR/NYK STHs with the bill!!!"

It follows a trend I have been observing. Shame someone into doing something they wouldn't normally do and use "a good cause" as the excuse.

The Garden took the same approach with the CityHawks Arena Football League team back in the mid-to-late 90's.

And after the Candace Wiggins story came out, I wouldn't give the WNBA one dime, donated as a charity or directly.

As a dad with a daughter who loves sports, that whole scene irritates the **** out of me. You don't see it in women's soccer. But you are starting to see the nonsense in men's soccer. Infuriating to say the least.

I wonder if participating in this donation program is a ticket to admission to the "Blueshirts off our Backs" promotion?

At least the Liberty play a real sport, sort of.

Arena football is an abomination. It does not shock me one bit that it failed miserably in a city like New York.
