I like mcilrath. he is never gonna be a great defensemen(he is better than bickel though lol) but his toughness gives us a spark

Id disagree about the great defenseman part. Just too early to call that. Hes only 21 years old.

Big DMen usually take awhile, Chara was what, 24 or 25 when he really started to break out? Weber was probably 23-24 when he really broke out as an all star.

The skill set for Mcilrath is certainly there, whether or not it happens is going to depend on how hard he works, and how his body works for him.

It looks like to me he could put on another 20lbs at least...When he fills out he is gonna be a beast

Werent they holding him out of the gym? I thought I read something like they wanted him to grow into it naturally, didnt want him to work out much.

If AV is only going to play him 5 minutes then he needs to be sent back down...

Most of what one learns in the NHL happens in practice, not in games. Just because we don't watch those, doesn't mean they don't matter.

They told him to just work out after he was drafted. Gordie mentioned that, unlike most kids who are told to bulk up, Dylan has just done normal exercises allowing himself to increase strength and size naturally over time. He mentioned it was a sign of maturity to not rush it.

You may be right. However considering he was a top 10 pick i guess im just expecting more. he is still young but i see him more as a enforcer/fighter than a quality top 4 defensemen

I would not call him skinny by any means but it's clear he has some filling out to do....which is down right scary.

How many all-star type big defensemen are there in the league that are 21 years old or younger?

Of his entire draft class and those since, there are only 2 guys who even made an all-star team, and they are both forwards

I'll repeat what I've said numerous times.

If McIlrath can be as good as Sauer was when we lost him it will be a tremendous plus for this team.

Dylan is going to be fine. The only problem is will he fit with AV's vision for this team moving forward? That I don't know. But Dylan will eventually be a very good Dman in this league.

He does quite a bit of that actually. Saw some good material on that over the summer.

Not saying he doesn't do it, I think I saw the same thing, he does a lot of CrossFit stuff but he just needs to continue it.

Big guys take longer to develop. Longer muscles, heavier frame, physically it takes time to catch up.

Solid game (well, 5 minutes)

Not too worried about the ice time at all. For starters we played with 7 at the back today. He played 8/9 minutes last game.

McDonagh started his career playing 10 minutes a night, until he jumped up to 20 (and then between 17 and 21) in his 7th game.

And even if he doesn't stay up, it's good for him to get some time against top players

When Girardi was 21 years old he split the season between the ECHL and AHL. McDonagh was 21 when he was called up. McIlrath does not have the natural athleticism that McDonagh has but you could say that about 95% of the rest of the league.

He still needs to work on his lower body strength along with his core strength. It will help with his balance.

Balance is an issue quite often for younger bigger players. It's a problem that usually goes away as the player gets older.

Anyway to the fight--as slipknottin said McIlrath has good defensive skills. He tries to use his size and reach to advantage. Against the bigger heavyweights he can hold his own. It's almost impossible to manhandle him. Going up against McGrattan tonight is a big deal. McGrattan would get my vote for best fighter in the NHL. He is really tough and when a fight turns into a slugfest he usually comes out on top--McIlrath hanging in against him will be news for the Sestito's of this world that the party is over that they can't just walk into MSG and do their thing without consequences.

But he needs seasoning!! Isn't seasoning in the AHL is the only way to improve your game?:sarcasm:

Besides the bad pinch in his first game he has been pretty steady. Don't notice him much, which isn't a bad thing as a defenseman. Took on a real mauler in his first fight and came out alive. He is still very very young.
