I like mcilrath. he is never gonna be a great defensemen(he is better than bickel though lol) but his toughness gives us a spark
It looks like to me he could put on another 20lbs at least...When he fills out he is gonna be a beast
If AV is only going to play him 5 minutes then he needs to be sent back down...
This. Most of what one learns in the NHL happens in practice, not in games. Just because we don't watch those, doesn't mean they don't matter.
Werent they holding him out of the gym? I thought I read something like they wanted him to grow into it naturally, didnt want him to work out much.
You may be right. However considering he was a top 10 pick i guess im just expecting more. he is still young but i see him more as a enforcer/fighter than a quality top 4 defensemenId disagree about the great defenseman part. Just too early to call that. Hes only 21 years old.
Big DMen usually take awhile, Chara was what, 24 or 25 when he really started to break out? Weber was probably 23-24 when he really broke out as an all star.
The skill set for Mcilrath is certainly there, whether or not it happens is going to depend on how hard he works, and how his body works for him.

He still needs to work on his lower body strength along with his core strength. It will help with his balance.
Yep, and more lower body strength = more explosion. Both in hits and in skating.
Exactly. Mobility in his hips has improved.

He does quite a bit of that actually. Saw some good material on that over the summer.
And that will describe most of his season but it's not terrible for him to watch how NHL players work up close for a short stretch. That's great, but playing 20+ minutes a night helps a lot too in all game situations.
If McIlrath can be as good as Sauer was when we lost him it will be a tremendous plus for this team.
