I've seen nothing as a fan that showed me DeAngelo can play defense on the NHL level. Maybe scouts who know more think otherwise. Hope I'm wrong but I don't see him long term here. Especially with a new head coach that values defense unlike AV. I think either Lindgren or Hajek makes the team this year. Smith can play the right side. If he stinks, he's basically finished in the NHL. Staal will be a good partner for Pionk. Stay at home vet. I would think the plan would be to break in another lefty defenseman this year which makes Staal expendable at the trade deadline. If he plays well they should be able to move him retaining some salary at this point. I think he would agree to a trade. By then Pionk should be comfortable.

There is no patience required when you see a player with zero hockey sense how to play defense and he's a defenseman. Only case I can remember of a defenseman nobody wanted that turned out to be really good was Stralman. I'm sure there is more. Then again, to be fair to DeAngelo, AV's system was completely moronic for defenseman to play in. So, perhaps he will flourish with this new system.

I somehow think that the Rangers are praying Staal and Smith have really good seasons so they can trade them just to dump some of their salary. The team is loaded on the left side with defenseman prospects.

A defenseman nobody wanted? I must have missed where DeAngelo had some PTOs with other teams and was on the market as an unrestricted free agent for months.

Please. The Yotes were God awful. Their defenseman core was complete garbage. They were more than happy to trade him away for a guy making a lot of money who was getting lazy in Stepan. If they thought he was any good they would not have included him in the deal. I said at the time I would have preferred the Rangers got back a second rounder instead in that deal instead of him. At what point did you ever hear of teams wanting DeAngelo before the Rangers dealt for him? I never heard him as being this hot prospect.
 
Another way to look at it, I have -- never -- seen a NHL defense-men who could produce offensively NOT become a good player in the NHL. Closest thing is maybe Mark Streit who for a while was played as a 4th line winger and PPQB specialist because he was so awful defensively. But he still got a nice career in the end.

You make your own bed with Tony DeAngelo. If you are willing to invest in him, he will become a solid NHLer. If you are not willing to invest in him, jerk him around, put him on the side due to mistakes, he would surely bust.

Investing in a kid isn't a given. You only have so many spots and we have a ton of spots on the blueline occupied by worthless contracts for over the hill vets. I am not saying that it would be a disaster if we moved on from Tony D. But if we invested in him and played him for a year or something like that in a consistent role I would be very surprised if he didn't settle in OK eventually.

100%. We need to see what happens when we trust him and work through the growing pains. Not with the ‘AV jerk around’ let’s see what happens under Quinn before we close the book on a 23 year old dman.

You're the type of fan who never heard of anyone until they were either elite players or played for the Rangers.

Have you ever heard of the expression "you have to give to get"? Just because a team gives up a players doesn't mean they were happy to do so. They had him for one year, in which he performed pretty well for a 20-year old playing pro. I'm sure they were high on him.

I was curious about the exact timing of the trade and discovered that the pick Tampa got for him was used on Libor Hajek. Random connection.

What I will never forget is that we drafted Ryan Callahan with a pick we got in exchange for Mark Messier :laugh:

To those who were asking, the 4 nations tournament is kind of used to give kids who didn't go to the WJSS a look. Lundkvist and Pajuniemi were at WJSS so they are playing preseason hockey with their respective clubs. Lundkvist plays at 1pm btw.

I remember watching the draft when that trade happened, and saying "DeAngelo for Hajek straight up? Tampa might end up regretting that"

Now they're both Rangers and it's hard to tell which one will be better. Not easy to predict the future :)

If the Rangers had any faith in DeAngelo they would not have used their third, first round pick on a righty defenseman in Lundkvist when the system is light on wings. Most scouting reports state that Lundkvist is mature for his age and played well against men already. Shattenkirk isn't waiving anything on his contract. He wanted to be here. He took less to be here. Pionk looks like he might be a keeper. So basically, once Lundqkvist is ready, DeAngelo is the 0dd man out anyway.
