Steven and I have discussed this topic, and so I'll share part of my experience.

There was a time I could've pursued a scouting a career. It wouldn't have been in New York, and it would've required moving clear across the country, but it was there.

But the rub was it also would've meant a significant pay cut for me, at a time when I was getting married and my career was progressing nicely.

But financial considerations aside, there's something to be said about enjoying something as a hobby and not having to be quite so dependent on it for a living. For me, attending games, watching video, talking to people who do that for a living is my balance to a world of deadlines, crisis situations, advocacy efforts with hostile communities, and all the things I don't necessarily love about my profession.

I know a lot of people who drink heavily in my line of work. I can go weeks without having a sip of alcohol, or months between bar visits. That's money that goes back to supporting my family, or time spent doing something that isn't going to get me in trouble.

There are a number of people on here who could very easily scout for a living. They're just as good as the professionals I know. In some cases, they're even better. There are many reasons they don't do that for a living, and those reasons vary from person to person. But there's more to picking a chosen profession than simply the ability to do it.

Likewise, there are many people who are passionate and opinionated and desperately would want to do it. I'll be blunt, they wouldn't stand a chance. Unfortunately, our greatest strengths don't always align with our deepest passions.

But working directly or indirectly in the industry is a combination of hard work, timing, and a little bit of dumb luck. But I also warn people that being a fan of something can often be as much of a hindrance as a help if you want to pursue certain careers. Sometimes, if you want to continue to love something, I strongly advise against doing it for a living.

Yeah, Edge and I discussed this "off the air" after we finished recording. And it's true. If I was 25, I would be totally happy to accept a job as a scout but with the current situation I am in, it would be a massive pay cut and I also don't want to "ruin my passion" by having it linked with deadlines, targets etc. It's like listening to your favorite song over and over again for a whole year. You will end up no longer liking it.

I write some articles for Forever Blueshirts since they approached me in February but the only reason I said yes is because I get to choose what to write about and when. No deadlines, no mandatory stuff. And doing that, keeps it fun.

I am living my life, I have a great job and have the financial resources to do what I love the most, as a fan instead of an employee. To travel. To watch hockey games in different countries. That to me is worth much more than doing it for a living. But if the Rangers want to reimburse me for my flights and hotels in exchange for a scouting report and interview with their prospects, it's hard to say "no" haha

I agree. This should be a top prospect in many systems. If you watch some of those highlights, seems he has the "it" factor. Knows how to jump into open spaces. It's something a lot of players don't have. My only concern is that we would be building an awfully small defense with Reunanen, DeAngelo and Fox all playing. I was not a fan of DeAngelo but he won me over the second half of last year. However, it seems that having both Fox and him doesn't make much sense now that you have Trouba. Plus, going with Vali. Team is too Euro for my taste. Playoffs are brutally physical.

How does having more Euros make you less physical? Has very little to do with nationality. You add North Americans like Hughes or Caufield and your team doesn't get any more physical.

He's the kind of fan you usually see at games yelling shoot and yelling at the refs in a bad New York accent. Thankfully this board has higher standards but he slipped through the cracks.

Thanks for proving you have not seen Reunanen, Själin, Ragnarsson or even Lundkvist play.

Aaltonen is my favorite pick of last week. Huge steal IMO
I was hoping Carolina to pick him with any pick after 84th, so was a bit dissapointed that you got to him first as late as 130th. Not that I have anything against the rangers. Intriguing rebuild and prospect pool. Aaltonen is one of the fastest skaters out there for sure.

As a North American, I can easily say I really don't care what the nationality makeup is...I want the best players. The Rangers are probably going to be Euro-heavy upfront, and US-heavy on the blueline. And, that's because that's how the chips fell. But, it's also where the Rangers have been successfully scouting recently.

It’s extremely clear to me that Gorton and his team have felt for a few years that Russia in particular has been underscouted or valued for whatever reason.

I feel the same way. To a lesser extend Finland as well.

In Finland they have gone through a complete revamping of their structuring and it shows. Laine, Aho, Kakko, Barkov, Heiskanen, Lundell, Niku, Vatanen, Rantanen, Teravainen. It is very clear that whatever they changed in Finland, worked. And not every team has caught on. Rangers going after players like Reunanen and now Aaltonen is very exciting to see.

It's ****ing hilarious how some of you North Americans think you are superior to everyone else.

Most of it probably has to do with more players in general coming out of Canada and the US over European countries... basically just a numbers game. In the last decade or two European players have been just as instrumental to their respective teams winning the cup as NA players

Ovechkin
Kuznetsov
Lidstrom
Zetterberg
Malkin
Backstrom
Datsyuk
Kopitar
Chara/Krejci

You take any of those players away from the winning team and things would have ended much differently for them

Very interesting stat I saw. Hit rate on Finnish prospects seems to be very high yet apart from the very top prospects, most of the other Finns drop a ton in the draft. Carolina in particular seems to have realized this possible market inefficiency.

Russia and some parts of Europe too. I think of it as baseball's version of Latin America.

A good hockey player is a good hockey player no matter where he comes from. I try not to get caught up in this American, Canadian, Russian, Swede, Finn, Czech debate. It doesn't really matter to me that much. Basically people are the same everywhere--we share the same biological traits and we have the same basic needs. People take this idea of one country being superior to another way too seriously and on another level these notions of being 'better than others' or 'the best' gets people killed or lives ruined for no good reason.

So I have a question, the last couple of years I feel like the picks we made after round 1 were the most promising that I can remember. What changed in terms of our scouting that we seem to do a better job outside of round 1? Or am I just saying that because they haven't had a chance to disappoint?
