Imagine being upset over a 4th round pick not making the NHL.

Calle was loaned out to Zug and later Lugano in the same season before trying to make something of his career in North America. He played for Hartford but injuries limited his career in the AHL. After agreeing to mutual termination of his contract, he returned to the country where he grew up as a kid to play for Bern, winning 2 championships in 3 years and now starting his 4th season. Not bad for a long-shot prospect.

Andersson also left and never came back, which is a shame, while his brother is in North America and had a good rookie year on the Flames. its a shame Andersson did not have the will power to stay with the Rangers organization. what a waste of a draft pick and prospect. i don't have respect for prospects like that.

Key word here: MUTUAL termination

depth is depth. maybe he could have been a 5th or 6th someone like Stralman. who knows. could have taken someone that was willing to stay in North America or in the AHL.
I mean, sometimes you pick guys that don’t develop like you thought they would. I doubt he would’ve sniffed the NHL if he stayed. There’s no real reason to be mad at the guy for doing what’s best for him and his career

Exactly. And for Calle, Switzerland was perfect. Salaries tend to be a bit higher, and as a homegrown player he did not count towards the limit of 4 foreigners on the ice despite being a Swedish citizen.

Kallarsson, Kveton, Yogan, Graves and Lampman were all 4th round picks but we don't complain about them not making an impact in the NHL. It happens. The 4th round is a crap shoot. I can't believe I have to explain this here (Not directed at you, GK)

so why have the Rangers hung on to Boo Nieves then? for a 2ed round pick, he is pretty awful and useless. i don't get why the Rangers management still love him. need to move on from players that are just on the team because of his waiver rights.

Dude, stop. You're just digging a hole for yourself. Not every player is a star. You need depth players and Nieves is still a very solid contributor in the AHL if he does not make the team

i understand that but Nieves is not an NHL player, yet he has been on the roster this past season. I rather have another Lemieux type, or a player that crashes the net, causes havoc, draw penalties and screens the goalie. McKegg will be the reason that Nieves is not on this team. McKegg is a huge upgrade over Nieves.

McKegg is a borderline NHL player, just like Nieves. There's not that much difference between the two. Neither of them will ever play in a top-9 role in the NHL for the Rangers. Nieves had a chance to get some games in, just like Lettieri, Brickley, Carey, Schneider, Holland and Puempel over the years. Yet you call Nieves "pretty awful and useless". You clearly have no clue what you're talking about. First with the whole Calle Andersson debate and now Boo Nieves.

Because he’s at least a good AHL player and his ‘going back home’ is staying in North America. Boo and Calle aren’t even close to being similar situations

McKegg is like two years older. This time last year he was a total bust, 12 points to his name at age 26. Five different organizations. He was just AHL depth. Nieves isn't a whole lot different in that he is low-end of the development curve. He's a good AHL player, though, versatile, can play in all situations. He's not worthless in the NHL, won't hurt you when he's out there. I don't know why anyone would feel the need to shit on him.

But sure, let's just go "get another Brendan Lemieux," despite the fact that he was drafted 31st overall. Let;s just go get one, though.

Saying someone could become a 5-6 defenceman like Strålman is like saying someone could become a 2C like Malkin. Strålman was a decent 1D at his peak.

A 5-6 defenceman is someone like Nick Holden, John Moore or Michael Del Zotto.

Nieves is a realistic option for us as a 4th line player. The good about him is he's big and strong and a really, really good skater. The not so hot about him is his lack of creative offensive ability and one of his main problems there is his predictability. He'll make--sometimes force passes when he should shoot and his playmaking isn't very good to begin with.

As a 4th line checking player though there is a role for him. One of the things he'll have to do is to become a mainstay on the penalty kill--not just be okay but be really good at it. His size, speed and strength are good assets for him in that role. The Rangers used him a bit on the penalty kill last year and (eye test) he wasn't great but he wasn't awful.

Not convinced he'll make the Rangers this year but if he doesn't he's a pretty good AHL player. On the trade market we might get a 5th back for him if we need to move him. He's what I'd call a tweener right now.

Stralman's best fit was as a 2nd pairing RD. Pairing with Hedman (who IMO is a top 5 if not top 3 NHL defenseman) is going to make any player look better IMO. I think Anton has faded the last couple years and I expect Florida is going to want him on their second pairing.

Strålman was Tampa's 1D when Hedman got injured in 2014-15 and excelled.

I agree that he is no longer what he was though.

Nieves had that issue of passing up (literally) open shots dating back to college. It was my main knock on him--he was like exclusively a pass-first guy.

To the point almost where when he does shoot the puck it's a surprise to everyone. I don't think it's his shot so much either--it's not terrific but it's okay and he stickhandles pretty well. His timing and offensive instincts kind of stink. It's also to the point where the goalies and defenses cheat on him......and he's helping them.

Yeah, his shot isn't terrible. It's not good, but it's okay.

Nieves, etc style is crucial yet he’s the forgettable type that come and go. That line will sort itself out.

Meanwhile, i’m still thinking a legit enforcer is needed b/c there are too many young kids while Lemieux is more in the mold of an Adam Graves IMO than a Joey Kocur.

...McKegg is a huge upgrade over Nieves.

this is not what i have seen, but i have only seen McKegg intermittently;
Nieves seems better skater, maybe better passer, but it is true that last year McKegg had higher FO%.

Actually my Nieves forecast is that he gets claimed, when waived, and plays full NHL season elsewhere.
McKegg likely goes unclaimed, and shuttles occasionally to NYR from HWP.

Right now as currently constructed we don’t have an nhl spot for Nieves or Andersson.

McKegg had a great NHL playoffs. He’s not starting in Hartford. Fully expect him to make the team.
