Re the tryouts,
McBride was HWP ATO but not invited prospect Camp
turned 24 this week, played 4 years NCAA D1 at AIC
Shawn McBride at eliteprospects.com

Kemp was at Prospect Camp, is 19, went undrafted twice, plays in W
Brett Kemp at eliteprospects.com

Maser is 20, coming out of the W
Josh Maser at eliteprospects.com

Milan is 23, completed 4 low-scoring seasons at MSU, wore an A as Sr
Cody Milan at eliteprospects.com

Salinitri is 21 since March, had a 40+ goal season in the O, per EP will enter U.Windsor this fall
Anthony Salinitri at eliteprospects.com

Getson turned 21 in spring, coming from Q
Keith Getson at eliteprospects.com

the D try out is Kade landry
Kade Landry at eliteprospects.com
turned 20 in May, had 45 assist season in the O
Kemp and Landry are the two I'm most interested in.

Salinitri used to be considered a decent late-round pick but kind of stalled. I'm sure he'd forgo his commitment to a U Sports team if he were offered an AHL deal.

maybe the Rangers feel that AHL time will be good for him but only if he is ready. maybe with the lack of depth at center, they want to give me a chance sooner rather than later

Yeah, who knows. I am definitely in general not in favor of rushing kids, but Henriksson isn’t an awful fit for the AHL. Like he is so nifty and smart with the puck, and such a strong player, that he never like would be shut down totally or end up just skating up and down the boards never getting quality time with the puck. Which kind of is the big concern with rushing kids. Like they come in and you think they do great for being really young, but then they get stuck at that level since they don’t get to play in a big role for a long time.

But I just saw Frolunda vs Farjestad in that preseason tournament. Henriksson did fairly well, but the kid is of course somewhat small and weak for the NA pro game.

Thanks! I got afraid that I would get a bunch of replies like “duh we had a bunch of unsigned Euros there every year for the last decade”, but I just couldn’t think of anyone and I still can’t.

why else would Henriksson consider this unless he has been told that the Rangers might sign him depending on how he does, and let him play in the AHL? has a european player played in this tournament and then went back to europe to play during the season?

I don’t think Henriksson being in the Traverse City tournament should not lead to a conclusion that he’s going to be in the AHL. Rather, it’s a good experience for him to take overseas anyway, and if anything, only confirms that J20, not the SHL, is likely where he’s going to start the season. Even that last part is only an extension of our discussion that he’s far down the center depth to make Frolunda from the start of the season.

Hmmm...

Thoughts?
None from me. For instance, Nils Lundqvist wasn't drafted, either. Seems like the CHL import draft, most teams pick guys they think might actually forgo their European team commitment. In round one, anyway. Then they either start skipping picks, or take flyers on other guys that are "pie in the sky" picks. So, I don't read anything into it.

Also good to note that Anthony Salinitri was a Flyer's draft pick who was unsigned and now a free agent. Definietly a good option for an AHL deal.

Henriksson is the most surprising of the list. I would say his situation will be similar to Calle Andersson's a few years back. I don't think he plays in Hartford and this pretty much proves that he'll be in J20 to start the year.

yeah I think CHL teams mostly only pick guys that have considered coming over. i'm sure there are exceptions where they pick a guy 'just in case' but there is a limit on the number of imports you can have. and typically most teams 'pass' and don't even take someone

I don't think it would make any sense for henriksson to come over to play in the CHL. zero advantage to that over playing in J20 and hopefully getting some time in the SHL.

but the AHL is a different story...I don't think there is much chance he stays here and honestly never even thought about it, but its an interesting idea. the AHL certainly is better than j20. and ex-ranger freddy sjostrom is the GM of frolunda. so its probably not crazy to think that the rangers have had discussions with him about henriksson's status with frolunda and likelihood of him playing in the SHL. not that he has an obligation to reveal that info, just assuming that as a former player there is a relationship there.

Andersson also left and never came back, which is a shame, while his brother is in North America and had a good rookie year on the Flames. its a shame Andersson did not have the will power to stay with the Rangers organization. what a waste of a draft pick and prospect. i don't have respect for prospects like that.

It’s really not that big of a deal, he wasn’t all that good of a prospect to begin with

Imagine being upset over a 4th round pick not making the NHL.

Calle was loaned out to Zug and later Lugano in the same season before trying to make something of his career in North America. He played for Hartford but injuries limited his career in the AHL. After agreeing to mutual termination of his contract, he returned to the country where he grew up as a kid to play for Bern, winning 2 championships in 3 years and now starting his 4th season. Not bad for a long-shot prospect.

depth is depth. maybe he could have been a 5th or 6th someone like Stralman. who knows. could have taken someone that was willing to stay in North America or in the AHL.
