Admittedly it's still very early in his development, but I was not thrilled with what I saw out of Lias who by many accounts was possibly NHL ready coming out of the draft.

I don't think anyone was thrilled by it, but I also don't think it means he has no upside from what he is now, either.

There's readiness and then there's upside. Lias has always been projected as more of a second line guy, not a first line guy, as his upside. We were also sold that he was relatively NHL ready for maybe a third line role. That latter part didn't end up being true, but I don't think it means the projection that he will eventually be a second liner is necessarily false.

Joe Thornton had 7 points in 55 games in his first year in the NHL, and look how he turned out. Some guys are just not ready at 18-19 years old, even if they were (incorrectly) projected to be.

In two more years if Lias hasn't cracked 30-40 points a year, then we have a problem. But if at 22, he puts up 40-45 points, I'll still be high on him as a second line center.

Lias is the easy pick here. After this, we're going to see a bunch of guys getting some love at 7. Nils, Rykov, and Georgiev will all be close.

Add Barron. Nearly a point per game center as a sophomore in the NCAA. Excited to see if he'll take another jump this season and turn pro at the end. Feel like he doesn't get the coverage a lot of the other prospects end up getting.

One thing about our system right now, we're still missing one of our 2nd rounders from this draft and we'll have added 6 players to our pool already. The system is extremely deep. I'd like to think that our #12 prospect will have a solid shot at being an NHL player.

What is really impressive to me was, as good as our top-5 was last year, we were able to add two new entrants into this years top 5.

Kakko cracking top-5, sure, isn't that much of a surprise, but adding a talent like Fox for just a pair of mid-seconds, is fantastic. Its moves like that which will push is forward.

For me, it feels like Andersson and Chytil have been here forever. We've talked about them so much that it's almost east to forget we're talking about a 20 year old kid and a 19 year old kid.

Remember 'year of the rookies'?

That season Leetch was 19, Sandstrom 23, Granato 24, Dahlen 20, and early twenties guys like Laviolette, Janssens, Lafreniere, Turcotte, MaCiver, and Kevin Miller seeing NHL ice. Not playing Pro, but waiting in the wings was Amonte, 18, Jay More, 19, and Richter, 21.

Then the next two drafts netted us some of the most important prospects in the teams history.

And that doesn’t even take into account all the talent under 25, or that carved out careers elsewhere - Beezer, Patrick, Tinordi, etc.

Can't believe Beezer was only 24 at that time. A seasoned Veteran by that point. If Neil Smith had not come in and put some order to the chaos that was going on I'm not so sure the young guys would have become as good as they did, even the guys who went elsewhere, minus the Messier trade prospects(who oddly didn't develop).

Should've traded Patrick and kept Tinordi ;)
