This side of @Amazing Kreiderman - For those voting Aaltonen, you’ve never seen him play.

Lindbom is the pick based on where he was selected 13 months ago.

For those who haven’t seen Aaltonen play yet, it’s not terribly hard to at least get glimpses. He’s not exactly an unknown prospect. While we grabbed him in the fifth, he was typically ranked in third or fourth round prior to the draft.

For those who follow prospects, it wasn’t really hard to watch him either in Finland or International play this past season.

Point taken (and I’ll admit I’m coming in a bit over the top).

My point is there are a few names (particularly Lindbom) that don’t have the shiny-new-toy feel.

The poll becomes a name-popularity contest of sorts at this point.

Too soon.

If I recall, Jan Marek had that impressive September camp - and was the final cut of the opening night roster. The opportunity never came and he eventually returned home for a nice career.

I come back to opportunity. I believe a lot of guys can stick in the league for a few years - but it comes down to opportunity. There are a lot of replaceable parts in the league, some play above or below their expectation or ability - health, personal issues, etc all factor in. Any given season, you have to understand it isn’t a video game with player ratings. Focus on the product on the ice rather than the player name.

With the amount of competition for pro spots, making this roster will require an outstanding camp - and that bodes well for the entire organization. From Kravtsov to Hajek to Lindgren to Fontaine, go get it.

Lindbom is such an interesting case IMO. I could see him being a big riser this year if he can build off his progress from 2017-2018.

Right now he has two strikes against him when it comes to polls like this one: he was an unpopular pick, and he followed it up with a season derailed by injury.

Exactly right. @Edge where is Lindbom slotted on your page? And where would Huska fall? (No pun intended(...

I have him in that 13-19 cluster. I don’t think there’s a hell of a whole lot separating a lot of them. Some guys lean heavier on the accomplishment side, some guys heavier on the potential side. But Lindbom’s ranking comes down to putting more post-draft road behind him. I can live with him at 19, though I do think there’s a tendency to sell his potential short.

As for Huska, I think he’s in that 19-23 range. Gettinger will end up rounding out the top 20, but I don’t know if there’s a ton of a difference between a guy who projects as a fourth liner and a guy who projects as a backup at this point.

And the "fruits of his labor" don't show up on any stats pages, because he was a backup on the SHL team for a few weeks. Once he returned from injury, he had a strong season, resulting in that call up.

So true. Timing is so underrated. That's why coaching is so important in the NHL. Have a good system, have players clear on their role, and you can really populate the bottom lines - and even some top line roles -with any number of players from the system. A team needs stars, of course, but you can complement them with role players and do well, I'm convinced. That's why it's a tactical error to overpay for the bottom line players. Unfortunately.

Sorry to bother, but since the site revamp I can't find a way to search individual threads.

What happened to Nico Gross that he is out of conversation currently, besides a few mentions and the fact we are drafting some stellar talent the past two years pushing a lot of players down the totem pole.

Captained his Swiss team that one year and stood out as a difference maker for that group. Other than that, crickets on HFB and not much love in this poll heading into the 20's soon.

He was a bit of a typical pick for us in the later round: guy that fell in his draft year due to injury or attitude concerns.

However, he hasn't progressed nearly as much as guys like Reunanen, Duclair, Buchnevich, or even Day; and he has nowhere near their skill levels.

His numbers suggest that he is stagnating, and in viewing him at the WJCs there was nothing there that stood out as a reason to be excited. Looks like he has a ceiling as a bottom 4 defensive defenseman, with plenty of bust potential.
