I think we need to contend with the possibility that Strome makes Panarin better, not just the other way around.

(Ducks for cover)

To me, Panarin this year is exacerbating the style he's brought here. Someone here mentioned that Panarin used to move his legs like a mofo in Columbus. The Rangers version of Panarin seems to be more of a darty, sneaky, shifty type. He floats, avoids traffic and tries to "emerge." This makes people think that he's hurt and trying to protect himself. I think in his first year and last year, he hustled, I mean, really hustled back and closed in on the opposing puck carrier to strip the puck from him. I'm not seeing that as much, maybe because he's nearly always too deep now or out of position altogether. When I do see him have the opportunity to close in on a puck carrier, he's not as aggressive as in years past. He also seems to be trending more and more towards slam-dunk types of plays. And the nonstop lateral passes, that's just something we're going to have to deal with. Last night, with Kreider and Zib, he seemed to be more "in" the play.

That’s similar to the make up I was thinking as well.
Blais has the offensive chops to play in the top 6 while adding his physical presence. Barron ideal for that 3C spot over strome, but we’ll worry about that at the end of the year.
Hunt-Rooney-Reaves is good. Keep that unit going.
The biggest question mark is if Zibby/panarin can have the same kind of chemistry 5v5 that they have on the PP. if that duo works, we’ve got it made. If not, he might lobby hard to try and go back to strome.
Panarin likes having control and doing most of the puck work on his line. Strome is like his shine box boy. He’s learned where he needs to go and to always expect panarin to make a pass even if the situation looks impossible.
Problem is, against good teams that play physical and take away the middle ( cross ice passes), it’s Easy to cancel that line and make them a non-factor. Add that to the fact that Panarin/Strome aren’t going to be in the convo with seller candidates either.
Hopefully Zibby/panarin can get it going. If that happens, I think we’re in a much better position to succeed

Agree with all of this. I still don't see how the team can afford Strome after this year. I figure next year would look like that lineup but, as you said, with Barron in Strome's spot, maybe pushing Kakko up to the top line RW, moving Kreids to 3LW and shifting Goodrow to his preferred 3RW spot.

I had just gotten back to the house with Tommy Two Thumbs and we were just going over the plan on robbing the Eisley Brothers' truck with the fancy vodka on Valentine's Day when I spot Phil Tomasino on my lawn. I says, hey, Phil, it's good to see you, what are you doing here? Phil just walks by me and punches Tommy Two Thumbs in the face! I couldn't believe what I just saw. Boy, Phil looked like he was about to murder Tommy. I said, why did you hit Tommy?! And Tommy's on the ground on my front lawn and now all my neighbors are outside. There's snow everywhere and Tommy's bleeding all over the place and it's a complete mess. And Phil says to Tommy, don't you ever touch or talk to my woman again, or I'll kill you! After Phil stormed off, I went to pick Tommy up and brought him into the house to get him cleaned up, and he's bleeding all over my floor. I'll never forget that day. You don't mess with Phil Tomasino. Ever. --Ray Liotta as Henry Hill

A lot of this first stretch of the season is on the road. A new coach getting use to his players and they're getting use to him and two top 6 players out of the lineup and Panarin is not playing well. So our start isn't bad being 3-1-0 on the road. We were also the better team in the overtime loss to Dallas. We shot ourselves in the foot in that one. We beat up a not very good Montreal team that was all revved up for its home opener. We did not play very well against Toronto but luckily Igor stole that one for us. Last night I thought we were the better team. Saros played pretty well despite two Zibanejad posts and a Kreider crossbar. Also Lindgren had his goal called back because a Predator D pushed Panarin offside which could or should have been an interference penalty that the refs missed.

Panarin has been uncharacteristically not very good. We need him to have two dangerous lines. If he can go back to normal our offense will be much better. The return of Strome no doubt will help that. Panarin and Chytil don't seem to work well together. They both want the puck and Chytil's thing is to carry it from one end of the rink to the other. He tends to curl if he's cut off and he usually looks for the closest safe option down low or at the point to move it too. I don't think how Chytil does things is all that comfortable for Artemi and that's unfortunate. Strome just works better with Panarin. Strome is just a better playmaker. Going forward though Strome looks to me much like a cap casualty next year that Buch was this year.

If only the Rangers had a Tommy that would ko that prick Forsberg! Feels like we’ve been owing that guy a walloping for years now.

Zibs was skating with a purpose, especially along the boards. He's knows where he's going now, no hesitancy to his game. When he hesitates the opposition knocks him off the puck, when he goes full speed along the boards he's much harder to line up cleanly and he can maintain possession and make a play after.

Panarin looks better and better each game. I actually don't want him forcing his way to slot/front of the net, that's not his game and it's what lead to our OT loss. Play it smart and maintain possession and the play will eventually be there for him to make. Even he can't force the play when it's not there.

I have no real complaints with Zibanejad so far. He's been pretty good.

Panarin OTOH has been flaming hot cheeto doodoo. I feel like hes gotten worse every game. He was really bad in Toronto aside from the goal and one God like sequence in the 1st where Nils clanked the crossbar. Yesterday was his Toronto game with out the goal or God-tier shift + more turnovers.

He had a god shift where he created a goal. It got called back. Shitty luck.

I really don’t understand why people are concerned about Panarin. I wouldn’t be surprised if he rips off 20 points in the next 5 games looking the exact same as he has. If he is still looking like he’s struggling and isn’t putting up points by the 10-15 game mark then I’ll get concerned. He hasn’t shown any reason to worry during his 2 years here.

I'm not worried about Panarin. Though I have different expectations than many. I don't need him to match his past production with us if it means more team success. He seems less effective at 5v5 in part because he doesn't succeed at scoring at the same right if everyone else is playing north/south. He ends up having to dig out pucks off walls, etc. He has to chase the game a bit more. I don't think it suits him. But it does suit the team. The playing style, when the whole team is doing it, is quite effective.

The fear is, when Strome comes back the two of them may play their own style and it could run the risk of hampering the team identity or keeping GAA down if they're a bigger defensive liability. But we'll see

In Goodfellas, Henry pistol whips smartass college boy who tries to get fresh with Karen.

That was Nick Pileggi talking a little poetic license.

The real story is that Phil Tomasino (“Philly Tomatoes”) delivered that beating.

While I appreciate Panarin hasn’t been so effective scoring-wise. I also see him more committed than ever on defense. I’ve spotted him below the defensive goal line quite a few times already this season. I don’t have stats but just my impression is that he’s giving more of a “complete” effort so far this season. I may be projecting. May be wishful thinking. Just seems that way to me.

Blais had a great playoff year with the Charlottetown Jr Islanders after he was brought in by the PEI club for the 2016 playoffs ....12 games and 19 points . A guy like Gallant might be a settling influence...and being in a contract season . Teams know when he is on the ice....that means something right now for us as it makes guys keep their heads up and rush the odd plays .
