Just when your awful proposal couldn’t get any worse, you go and drop this garbage on top.Canadiens making the trades and then trading the assets is less sensible because if the Rangers intended to trade Petry/Tatar/Danault, they would get full flexibility to see what the best offers are that fit THEIR needs, as opposed to Bergevin trying to guess. It is literally the job of a GM to make trades.
Petry (RD) - Toronto, Winnipeg, STL (if Pietrangelo walks), Edmonton, Vancouver (if Tanev walks) --- all places that would pay a good price for Petry at the draft.
Tatar (LW) - There are probably 10-15 teams in the NHL that would make a move for Tatar at the draft. 119 points in 148 games in Montreal, all situations player, 5on5 beast.
Danault (C) - One of the best (top 10) defensive centers in the league. Absolute monster 5on5, kills penalties, great at faceoffs, tons of teams would pay a premium for a player like Danault at the draft.
Petry (50% retained again) to Toronto for Kerfoot + Toronto's 2021 1st
Tatar, Lias Andersson to Columbus for Josh Anderson, Oliver Bjorkstrand, 2021 1st (top 5 protected)
Danault, Rangers 2021 1st, 2nd to Minnesota for Dumba
DeAngelo + small add to Tampa for Sergachev (Strong side for weak side trade for both teams)
Panarin/Zibanejad/Kakko
Kreider/Strome/Bjorkstrand
Chytil/Kerfoot/Anderson
Fast/Howden/Gauthier
Sergachev/Trouba
Smith/Dumba
Romanov/Fox
Still have: Columbus and Toronto 2021 1st round picks. Montreal's 2020 1st, Chicago's 2020 2nd.
Added: Dumba (6m/3yr), Sergachev (TBD, RFA), Josh Anderson (TBD, RFA), Bjorkstrand (RFA in 2021), Kerfoot (3.5m/3yr) - Caufield (ELC), Romanov (ELC),
Traded: 1OA (Lafreniere), DeAngelo, Buchnevich, Staal (Cap Dump), Lundqvist (Cap Dump), Andersson (who wants out) and the Rangers 2021 1st.
None of the assets that the Rangers walk away with in the end of this deal leave the team in the next 3 seasons. By the time Dumba and Kerfoot are up, Caufield and the 2020 picks will be NHL ready. Rangers can aggressively add at the TDL having two firsts to move around, or they can continue to stock their cupboards while icing an incredibly deep team.
Yes, I understand that the Rangers are losing the BEST PLAYER IN THE DEAL. But what the Rangers are effectively doing is trading one potentially "amazing" piece for a handful of pieces ranging from good to great, with some even having the potential to be more. If they did not have Panarin and Kreider, I would agree its nonsensical to trade Lafreniere, but the reality is you are going to have one of Laf/Kreider/Panarin playing on their off wing or the third line for the next 7 years unless you trade one of them.
Losing Lafreniere sucks, but the Rangers would have four first round picks in the next two drafts, Caufield (15OA who could have gone around 10), Romanov (2nd round pick who in a re-draft likely ends up middle of the 1st at worst), a legitimate #2 defenseman for 3 years, a complete revamp of your bottom 6 giving you more depth, speed and physicality, and to top it all off you still end up saving cap space this season.
The Rangers "rebuild" might be coming to a close, but there's no denying that the Rangers would be a better team for the next 2-5 years if they trade Lafreniere for a king's ransom, and continue to stock their cupboards with high end talent and tons of options, because the reality is after 5th overall it really is just a guessing game.
You’re suggesting it’s in our teams best interest to pass on a prospect like Lafreniere for a combination of lesser assets in the hopes we can hypothetically trade them for other assets.....?
And it’s not a GM’s job to make trades. It’s his job to build a team that can ultimately win a championship. That includes scouting, negotiating contracts, drafting, and countless other things.
Give it a rest. All you’ve done is create a complete abomination of a proposal that doesn’t do jack shit for the Rangers.
