Gourde-Tanev is a 3rd line of championship teams

our 3rd line turns the puck over at the blue lines and neutral zone. Stark contrast.

Yet we have people asking "Is getting a player in here that pushes Goodrow to the fourth line a good thing???"

Yes. Yes it is.

I hope Gallant realizes this team needs to make hockey decisions faster. We were eaten alive because we take our time in all 3 zones and expect the other team to just be frightened by our skills and fall into a defensive position. The Kraken suck on paper so they really have no reason to be scared or respect anyone if playing conservative will kill them over 82 games. The Rangers have the size and grit thing down pat. Now it's the speed of the game.

This game really highlighted why we've suck so badly in 9 games so far. We are too slow with the puck. Is this because Gerard is teaching puck management? Seems so. Some of the worst offenders on our team were exposed tonight with their poor puck management. Until that becomes second nature and the players learn the system and figure each other out, we'll continue to see Leafs games and Kraken games. It'll be ugly when we play the Canes and the Cats. They waste little to no time taking the puck up the ice and reentering the zone.

Really good comment. Thinking of the Isles games last year, what made them so effective was that they made their breakout & transition passes so fast to a teammate moving in space. They knew where their people were going to be & got the puck there pronto.

They had a plan, they worked as a team.

Last night was another one of these Rangers games where our guys look surprised to see the other team trying to obstruct their passes & plays.

Agreed. I’ve been a big time Trouba detractor but he’s been great this season.

Honestly amazed at the results so far given the poor play we’re getting out of pretty much all of our top end forwards.

This team is on a Canadiens like playoff run to start the season. Can it last 8 more months?
Miller-Trouba is playing as good was Morrissey-Trouba did when they jets wouldn’t deal him unless it was overpayment.
Imo, they are better. Miller is just as mobile as Morrissey was but he’s bigger and has more offensive potential.
Trouba’s Abrasive style is also rubbing off on him which is exactly what we all want to see.
Any fan that wouldn’t still do that pionk/a trouba deal still doesn’t realize the importance trouba has had both on and off the ice with NYR

They did this multiple times. One would think they would learn, but apparently not.

I saw each one of them do it - once it was Blais stickhandling at the top of the zone through traffic (rather than sending the puck to the corner), once it was Fil stickhandling thru two defensemen, once it was Laf with the big cross-ice pass in the neutral zone. Each time the puck got picked off & sent the other way for some Seattle zone time.

Rangers have this stuff in their DNA. Very hard to get them to change their ways, apparently.

The Rangers had very little business winning that game, again.

Igor has really been locked in.

This team looked like it was still hungover from Panarins Bday/Halloween party.

I felt the 4th line had a nice game and quietly has been very effective. They will score a big goal for this team sooner rather than later. Even though not ideal, one of McKeggs better games as a Ranger as well.

A lot of standing around in the D zone and extended shifts. Second period becoming an issue with the long change. Second period and a majority of the third was atrocious.

You arent going to get away with it like this every game but in the post game the comment about the Rangers having the game breaking skill the Kraken didnt, was the difference. And it was. (in addition to Igor keeping it a winnable game with one shot)

The Fox goal was 160 ft, 10-second give and go.

Need more from Mika.

A game like this especially makes me think that this season could look really different if the powerplay were producing more. Playing in tight games, a dangerous powerplay is a big weapon and it could do a lot to back teams off a bit against us. We're drawing penalties at a high rate this year, but I think we're actually seeing as much let go and ignored as usual. If we were converting at our usual clip, I think these games would open up more for us. Good that our penalty kill has been improving.

In respect to Wallstedt---he has a chance to be the best player out of this past draft. Along with being 6'3 and 215 lbs. already he is a machine in goal. As a 17 year old he became Lulea's starting goalie and played really really well in the SHL which is at the least the second best European league. Way beyond the competition that Garand (who I like) is facing. Keep in mind players aren't supermen. Last night we saw Fox go off for a while. Injuries happen and if you got all your money on one guy and he gets hurt your season can get wrecked real fast. If Igor got hurt next week and Alex went in for him for a long spell 90% of this board would be crying their eyes out and shitting bricks. I would have taken Wallstedt because IMO he was easily the best player left on the board when it was our turn. I haven't changed my mind on that at all.

That said Othmann has grown on me.

The NYR right now have one of the biggest disconnects between W-L record and on ice play as I can remember seeing.

I do agree that the team's current struggles offensively are bigger than individual players.

But there’s no denying that there are a bunch of players that just need to get going. I thought Zibanejad played putrid, then checked the stats and he actually was one of our best offensive players. Trying to be patient with Lafreniere and Kakko, but it is getting frustrating for sure.

The man knows what he's talking about. The team was being outplayed, but they still had some structure in the defensive zone. Without structure, it would've looked even worse.

fair enough and I’m not trying to make something out of nothing but he gave no credit to Igor.
Igor is the sole reason we won that game not anything else

Rangers are 6-2-1.

They lost the face off battle in their 6 wins, won it in their 2 losses and the 1 game that they lost in OT, face offs were 50%.

I would be ok with not winning the faceoff battle overall but winning it on the pp, pk and late in games in your zone is important.
A neutral zone draw with 8 min left in the second period yeah no need to be worried

Come on. We would all love having Fox, TdA, Pionk and Nils so we can call our d core the Keebler elves.

Wins are better than losses

seriously though. I don’t think this team has the new system down yet. Shesty has stolen a few for us when we haven’t been at our best, and during our most brutal stretch of schedule of the entire season.

there are concerns, but we are banking VERY important points right now

I've said this time and again, those 11-12 and 13-14 teams were brutal to start the season. Remember that 4-0 win against Vancouver where we dominated as bad as we were dominated all year? 14-15 was a bleh start too. Now we could go the other direction, but it's not guaranteed or anything.

I mean our record could be even better--as would our goal differential--if our power play was converting near it's usual rate. I'm seeing big improvements from Kreider, Kakko, Lafreniere, Trouba, Miller, and Shesterkin. Goodrow and Blais have fit in well.

That's a lot of question marks that have been trending positively. The things we took for granted--namely 93 and 10--have a lot to do with that PP and vice-versa.

You can't really say they're still getting used to a new system when they stop following it and their structure breaks down. Gallant has already said the systems among all teams in the league aren't that much different from each other and that it comes down to execution.

A system is there, but guys like Meek-a and Panarin, when they don't want to engage in the forecheck or battle for the puck, then any system is not going to work. The one thing that's system related might be the speed at which they do things moving the puck out of the zone and through the neutral zone, but guys keep trying fancy things at the blue line that destroy puck management and getting pucks deep to work the forecheck and cycle.

Their attention to the system comes and goes. I remember early in the game, they had a really nice breakout with the forwards coming back to our blueline and doing switches with the dmen for give-and-go's with the puck to advance it up ice.

I'm seeing Mika try to win pucks along the boards but just getting muscled off the puck easily. Panarin is not a boards guy but he's usually able to come away with the puck more often, and he was never a burner but his first step and top speed is slow so far this year. Doesn't seem like a lack of effort from either guy, maybe our two highest paid super stars just both needs a few weeks to get into peak form, let's hope that's all it is...

I would’ve taken Wallstedt as well. I was surprised they didn’t take him but that must have been because Allaire saw something he didn’t like. Lots of goalie coaches had him lower than Cossa. But then again, Allaire is Allaire and could’ve fixed Wallstedt’s issues whatever they were. I still hate the Othmann pick

The goaltending coach who potentially saw something he didn't like (or maybe even couldn't fix), is the same guy you assume could fix the issues. What am I missing?

Nine games into a new coaching staff. People forget this. Does anyone remember how bad they looked when AV took over? Now, this is not as big a jump to go from Tortorella's "We don't practice offense" system to AV's, but it's going to take time until games like they had against Columbus (in terms of cohesion) are a night-in, night-out thing.

That said, the Rangers have enough skill where they ought to be licking their chops at a matchup with Seattle, who just don't have good enough players so their only option is to sell out and be hyper-aggressive on the forecheck. You do that by being crisp and quick with your passing and decisions. Skate around and through their players when they step up. Obviously last night they were no where close to being quick or decisive enough. Some improvement in the 3rd but that 2nd period was terrible. One to learn from and you take the 2 points when you can walk out of another team's building with them.
