With all the Leach and no retread posts I'm surprised nobody is commenting on Leach feeling he wasn't ready for the job. I respect that on his part.

I read that as at least partially that he didn't want to come to a place that would put pressure on him to win a Cup in 2 years or be fired. Which is also respectable, but reflects on the org's priorities being maybe not exactly in the right spot.

It's water under the bridge at this point but IMO they screwed up their rebuild by prioritizing too much "present," and not enough "future," to the point where now neither are good enough.

I do not think any team would tell a coach win a cup in 2 years or gone. I do think most contenders have a win now mentality to a degree though. You don't got to the ECF and then turn around and say we are rebuilding. Every year is individual. I don't think Vegas nor Florida would have won in some prior years. Props for them both jumping on the chance this season.

It's the Glen Sather and James Dolan way. I guess it's our fault for believing they'd actually rebuild when they said they would. Fool me once. Now we know they lie through their teeth and they'll never do the correct things.

Well I doubt they straight up told him that at an interview but it's clear to see based on their treatment of their last coach and all the buzz surrounding the guy they did end up hiring.

It's win now and the coach and GM will both be gone in 2 years if they don't.

If we the fans see that, then surely Leach does as well. Maybe as a first timer he didn't want that pressure, whereas a guy nearing the end of the line who HAS won a Cup and been to two others, doesn't mind that pressure (and also doesn't have the time to be picky about his next stop).

But we didn't go to the ECF this year, we went out in the first round. To a team, by the way, who is likely to at least be an every-year impediment to our goal and a team that is likely to be taking us to school on how we should have done it.

And every step since about 2020 that we've taken has been towards winning now instead of finalizing the rebuild. We cut bait too early and we are seeing it now. A flawed roster and staring up in the standings at a team that acquired a possibly insurmountable array of young elite talent.

Florida stuck with their young core, threw them into big roles from the start and showed patience to let them grow. Then traded for one of the best forwards in the game in his early 20s.

The Rangers built for maybe 1 season before signing Panarin making him the highest paid winger in the game in his late 20s and then they completely abandoned the rebuild and buried their 1 and 2 overall picks and haven't given them anything resembling the the same responsibilities and roles as the Devils did with their young players or the Panthers did with their players.

The Rangers are an example of what not to do.

Well if we dont win a cup in 2 years hopefully drury is gone.. and sather retires.

Then just maybe we can start doing things right.
Won't happen with Dolan around. They won't do the right things. He's the root cause of all the problems.

I’m not sure what young core you are referring to. Barkov and Lindell were about it.

Ekblad. Huberdeau (who helped them land Tkachuk), they've had quite a few very good players come through their ranks. Could also make a case that Verhaeghe counts since he's done the bulk of his development there.

If Drury is responsible for bad coaches and rosters, then Dolan is responsible for bad GMs. What’s his record as owner of the Knicks and Rangers for 25+ years? Zero championships. One finals appearance. The problem has always been Dolan.

Barkov, Ekblad, Lundell, Luostarinen, Forsling, Verhaeghe...

Some of them acquired externally.

But the point is they have young guys who made their mark in the league on the Panthers.

Rangers take a 1 and 2 overall and treat them like second and third rate fringe prospects. The Rangers have no clue how to develop players at all. It's all about being marquee, instant gratification, they don't care about winning and functioning like a hockey/sports franchise. They function like a one-off night out on the town and woo-ing corporate execs. They don't cater to their real fans. They make a mockery of us.

Dolan is one of the worst owners in sports. He's ruined the Rangers. If someone who hated losing and wanted success more than anything owned this team imagine what could be done.

The doom and gloom is a little over the top here.

Lav seems like he might be a comfortable middle between Quinn’s oppressive micromanaging and Gallant’s hands off “gotta play better” coaching style. Not an exciting hire but I don’t really care how exciting a name is as long as the guy can get the most out of the majority of our players. We’ll see.

I guess ‘sticking’ with their young core doesn’t mean what it used to. By these standards, every team has a young core. Some win the SC, most don’t.

I’m sure Dolan sees himself as the problem.

I just wanted a younger guy who knew analytics and knew how to implement a system that works in the modern NHL.

Getting run out of Washington for killing his young players there... Man. Hard to be optimistic about this.

Everyone knows Dolan cares only about franchise value. And value is not tied to results. It’s tied to branding, real estate, tv deals, broadcasting rights, etc. The narrative is that Dolan is relatively hands off with the Rangers so that’s good. But what good is being relatively hands off when his one email per year is an impulse firing or a demand to sign/trade for some random aging star.

It’s not good. For us. But that doesn’t matter.

It’s pointless to complain about. He will own this team until he dies and then an even less competent relative will take over.

Teams that do it correctly. Rangers haven't. And that's why they're nowhere near being a Cup contender.

don’t care about age, but that type of coach, is not getting fired.

But yet he had no issues with young players on the Flyers Islanders and Predators. Its not like the Capitals have depth of young players. Maybe the young players on the Capitals are not that good.

He coached a young Couturier Simmonds Richard's Carter Giroux Josi Johansen Parrish Ekholm Eric Staal Justin Williams Brayden Schenn. Yea he is bad with young talented.. he did coach other teams other than Washington. They had no young depth
