Confirmed with Link: Rangers hire Mike Sullivan to

Sullivan said the exact same things Gallant and Laviolette said so I’m yawning at this. Called even more unimpressed by this hiring. Like I said in previous posts, I expect playoffs next season, but not much after that and a lot of that is out of Sullivan’s control to be fair.

The one thing that impressed me was that I own the same pin that Sullivan and Drury are wearing.

He is so honored to be our coach and just knew he wanted to be here and that it was the right fit for where he wants to take the team.

Sure bud. What-f***ing-ever. There were 7 million reasons for you to say that.

Eh... he likely would've had his choices of teams offering him similar money. I doubt the size of the salary was much of a factor.

I don't know how true that is. Not many teams can pay their coaches what the Rangers pay. But maybe you are right. He just really like the potential with this group.

Not everyone would offer it, but most could. If the Flyers hire a veteran coach, the salary probably won't be much different. Besides, Sullivan would have made $5m this year not taking a job at all.

Here’s the MSG angle. Extra 4 minutes:

"There are no transactions or trades or callups that management does without speaking to the head coach and that's not going to change here." - Drury

Of course "speaking to the head coach" has the verbal nuance that can include "Hey, this is happening. Make it work." but if you take it for the spirit of the sentence, it'd be even more surprising if the HC was not consulted. In work management, there is this concept of RACI, responsible, accountable, consulted, informed. The HC seems to be more in the consulted bucket than the informed.

Anyways, just wanted to say Laviolette was consulted on every trade during his tenure including Reilly Smith, Soucy, Roslovic, Wennberg, and Ruhwedel. Those were all winners 😒 Hope Sully can do better. outside of acquiring Tomasino and Rakell, I'm not sure that PIT has too many trade wins besides the ones with NYR.

Did anyone watch the portion with Maloney interviewing Sullivan? Someone on Bluesky said that he specifically called out Kreider as someone he can't wait to work with. That didn't seem to happen during the press conference unless I totally missed it. Maybe it happened during the interview with Maloney.

Well they did have some experience together at 4 Nations. I imagine Sullivan knows about his injuries and what his recovery roadmap looks like. A healthy CK, a competent coach, there's a redemption arc built in that could totally be exciting to build but all us fans are jaded so it's hard to get excited about it without being personally involved and having all the info.

I am hopeful....need some wins with player transactions. Drury was very reverent towards Sully.

Ok. But did Sullivan say that?

If there was one player on the entire roster that Sullivan could have said he looked forward to working with that would bode the worst for us, it's Kreider.

He's the one guy who we should move and who is easy to move. Are we f***ing seriously going to run this same group out again?

I mean, until the roster is changed up then he's probably gonna talk about the guys he has and not so much in the "well, we're trading that guy and we're hoping to bring in this other guy so I'm excited about that"

Same things, nothing will change. We need to build around the young guys and have the older guys as complimentary pieces. Instead we’ll get more of the status quo. This guy is basically David Quinn and Laviolette in one. “Earn it”. Then sit on their hands for veterans that don’t deserve a damn thing. I’ll believe accountability when I see it. Let’s also not forget he had Sidney f***ing Crosby as the one to set the tone and set everyone else straight. Good luck with these gutless losers.

Regardless, it won’t matter anyway if they don’t fix that d core to be more mobile and we become faster. Apparently, that’s his system and he won’t change it for personnel he has. Better get cracking Drury.

I dunno what some people expect him to say really though. you're not gonna get some crazy insights and quotes from an introductory press conference

he's gonna coach the team in front of him. whatever it's makeup I just hope he holds the players accountable for playing the correct way and giivng more icetime to the guys who are playing well even if they're young players, rather than ride the vets no matter what

These press conferences are always just the typical caged responses. He's not going to say anything informative or outstanding, so it's not surprising how it went.

The second round only just started. Drury is gonna have meetings with Sullivan to get his perspective and discuss potential moves. The moves will happen closer to the draft, just like they do every year.

Not that there was really any doubt but nice to see “learn to backcheck” NYR development culture out in full force already. Should deal Perrault while he still has value.

I'll say this: at least it's not Rick Tocchet!

NHL coaches are mostly ineffectual. Tocchet is like the one guy in the league driving winning percentage headfirst into a tree who keeps getting hired.
