Confirmed with Link: Rangers hire Mike Sullivan to

Not that there was really any doubt but nice to see “learn to backcheck” NYR development culture out in full force already. Should deal Perrault while he still has value.
“NYR Mike Sullivan has decided Kaapo Kakko will be a healthy scratch for Seattle tonight”

I'll say this: at least it's not Rick Tocchet!

NHL coaches are mostly ineffectual. Tocchet is like the one guy in the league driving winning percentage headfirst into a tree who keeps getting hired.
THis seems like a weird take that's becoming popular

At the highest level of the sport where winning and losing is separated by minute amounts of skill and often luck, we just dismiss coaching as "doesn't do anything"?
At the very least there's a motivation factor, management of players, and implementation and enforcement of systems to give the players the "best" chance to win. Players themselves aren't going to organize all that effectively and it can easily be the difference between winning and losing.

I don't think there are many true "I can take this team of shitty players and make them winners" coaches out there, that's true, but there are varying degrees of "I can take this team of good players and make them competitive or put them over the top depending on what I have to work with" coaches. If you don't have one of those then you'll probably struggle to win

It's not that the act of coaching literally doesn't do anything. It's that the current crop coaches are all really similar in terms of systems and habits. The game hasn't been revolutionized in years. They're all 90% doing the same thing. Motivation is a factor, but a lot of them lean on the same favorites.

Same thing with goaltending which I'm always going on about. It's not like goaltending in a game or a series isn't important. It's massively important. The issue is that goaltending is a solved position and the NHL has 3D-printed the same goaltender 64 times.

Modern analytics don't value defense at first base. It's not because first base isn't important. It's because you can teach any MLB player to play first base.

If we do the opposite of whatever the hell Housley was doing, that should be a big checkmark for coaching improvement.

As for coaching looks, half the head coaches in the NHL look like a combination of Uncle Fester and my testicles, so any semblance of a jawline and hairline looks good by comparison.

Laviolette looked like the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man.

I didn’t watch (An American Pope takes precedence) but curious if he said anything about Peca and Muse (and a defensive coach)
don't think so

awkward situation of having some guys familiar with the group but also wanting a new coach to be able to choose his assistsants. Hopefully everyone is flexible in that situation and will choose the best course

Did any of the beat writers ask about assistant coaches or what? Im gonna assume no.
Staple:

No news yet on assistant coaches

A league source said Sullivan may not fill out his staff just yet and could be waiting to see who’s available as teams drop out of the playoffs and new coaches are hired around the league. There are still five teams with coaching vacancies at the moment.

Mike Vellucci, Sullivan’s assistant the past five seasons in Pittsburgh, could be an option. David Quinn, the former Rangers coach who was Sullivan’s assistant this past season, might also be an option, even though there could be some obvious reluctance for Quinn to return to the Rangers under Drury, who fired Quinn upon getting the GM job four years ago.

There will be other candidates too, though Tortorella will not be one of them.

If there was one player on the entire roster that Sullivan could have said he looked forward to working with that would bode the worst for us, it's Kreider.

He's the one guy who we should move and who is easy to move. Are we f***ing seriously going to run this same group out again?
Been trying to tell you guys for months. Dont expect any big changes. Dolan want his sweet playoff revenue and now with the Sully hire, Win mode engaged, run it back!

Next season is either a total disaster or a deep deep run. It will be interesting to watch.

@MollieeWalkerr

I asked new #NYR coach Mike Sullivan about his philosophy on managing young talent in this league:“I think that it really is an individualized process. I don’t think you can paint every player with the same brush. Everyone is different. Part of coaching or the art of coaching, I guess, is trying to figure out what that daily recipe is that’s best for the player. Sometimes it’s time in the American League as a young player, sometimes it’s time in the National League depending on the types of minutes that that player can play. What I will tell you is that I think it’s important that every player earns their opportunities, that no one’s entitled to an opportunity.”

Great answer, let’s see if he backs it up.
I feel like gallant and lavy said similar things at their presser.

Obviously gonna be Messier and Avery.

Isn't next season the "Centennial"? If so, you can bet that Dolan wants a playoff team on the ice.
