Rangers have lost 6 out of their last 7 games. What would you do if you were Dolan (the owner of the team) or Drury (the GM)?

Gallant was a shit coach but he called the core out when they lost to NJ, it's a shame that management truly believed the players over him.

I don't know about that. He did say "it's nice to have talent but better to have work ethic" at one point here, but he talked about Game 7 like it was winnable or could have gone either way because it was 0-0 for a while (yet 99% of the entire game took place in the Rangers' d zone). He definitely seemed out of touch with his inability to implement a system, and no other team has given him a chance since.

Overall, it is true that the Rangers' core is simply not good enough, but it's also true that Gallant stunk.

Yeah, he's a god awful coach, I wasn't defending him from an X's and O's perspective. The guy almost swan dived Lafreniere's career by being petty but there's something to be said for what he said there and that core. I think it was a general/blanket statement about coaching and how coaches get the brunt of their players not showing up but sometimes talented players/cores think they're better than they are and lead into bad situations. The Rangers aren't the first NHL team to have this happen and they won't be the last.

It’s actually amazing how completely the wheels have truly come off in the span of a single offseason. They brought back the same roster (give or take) and just completely nosedived.

Kind of wild they only signed Shesterkin to that monster deal a week ago. Now they’re looking at a total tear-down.

Their downfall needs to be studied

I don't think a lot of people realize how dire the situation is and how bad the team is by just looking at standings and stuff. They are getting absolutely shelled night in and night out, like Blackhawks and Sharks bad. Can't touch the puck a lot of times, getting cycled on for endless stretches, with no quality chances being generated the other way.

They were hanging on by a thread to start the season and goaltending was able to keep that thread on but it's been yanked off.

The flip isn't gonna magically switch and it's hard to imagine and trade even hypotehtical unrealistic ones like for a MCDavid/MacKinnon doing anything for this team.

Rags weaknesses were covered up by Igor being otherworldly the last couple of years. That being said, there are elite pieces on the roster - maybe the C position needs more, but I wouldn't underestimate the toxicity created by the Goodrow / Trouba incidents. Dolan might fire the coach, but the GM also looks like a weasel.
It's spectacular to watch though.
They going to try and purge the team of other vets?
As if other GM's don't smell the desperation?

Instead of being studied how about celebrated?

This doesn’t at all explain what’s going on here.
Echoing the post above. This simply is not reflective of reality at all.

There is no level of realistic goaltending you can get that could save this team
Last year they were 21st in 5v5 xgoals %. This year they're actually doing better there (20th). Last year they had the #3 ranked pp and #3 ranked pk. This year 15th ranked pp and #2 ranked pk.

PP has dipped a bit but pk is about the same. 5v5 numbers are about the same.

Not really seeing much on paper that looks different with their 5v5 play? They were not very good at it last year either. They feasted on special teams and got good goaltending. This year they're not feasting quite as much on special teams and their goaltending has dipped a bit.

The problem with your analysis is contained in your post. This isn’t an issue of statistics or what’s on paper.

No amount of statistical analysis explains the lack of confidence and effort level we see right now.

I mean that's fair. I won't pretend to know more than Rangers fans about what they're seeing. If they think the team is dogging it or whatever they may well be right. I don't watch enough Rangers games atm to counteract that claim.

I'm just trying to quantify what I see statistically.

It would not surprise me if Lavy is fired in short order and they ride a new coach bump into a playoff spot. Otherwise we might see the Atlantic sending 5 this year. Or something truly comical like the Flyers or Pens.

I don't get what they are waiting for. At the very least swap the coach and see what happens. Personally, not a believer in that core, but atleast it sends a jolt through the line up and you can pump some values up for off-season trades or trades at the deadline.

It’s rare for the owner to be involved in that decision.

That source is a joke right?

VINCENT Z. MERCOGLIANO the only insider who they told that.

And why would the owner even get involved before the rangers come up with a sdomewhat respectable offer?

One theory: Maybe the players didn't like how Captain Trouba was handled. Lost motivation to play for an organization that could throw important players away like that. Wouldn't explain why they sucked before, but if they suck worse now, that could be it.

I don't really buy this "players are against the organization" thing. Vegas has been treating their players with absolutely zero loyalty for years and it hasn't really caused issuea for them.

There has to be a lot more to this than the Trouba situation.

He isn’t the only one that was told that. It was just one confirmation of something that had been whispered around the story for months. IIRC Larry Brooks and Arthur Staple also confirmed it.

I also wouldn’t so much call Mercogliano an insider, so much as I’d call him a beat writer. He’s definitely one of the better ones covering the Rangers, with a lot of good sources to confirm stories.

As you deserved to, it's a dumb take. The Rangers accelerated rebuild is one of hockeys quickest turnarounds, they won the mfing President's trophy and almost made the final - things that are the explicit end goal of every rebuild that has ever happened.

It may have resulted in a short window (that remains to be seen), but that doesn't mean it was the wrong call. If they'd continued their rebuild slowly they could very well be in an even worse position. Most rebuilds go absolutely nowhere.
yea real dumb take. 3 years of not really being a contender to having to do a full rebuild. stay dumb and look at short term marginal success.

I’d be curious what those stats say if you removed the first 6 games of the season.

Which key core (heart of their club player, on a contract, did Vegas treat like the Rangers did to Trouba?

Then plz explain why the owner would get involved when the rangers couldn’t even come up with an offer worth sharing the medical files.

You’ve got it backwards here. The Rangers didn’t “come up with an offer worth sharing the medical files” because the owner had already put his finger on the scales.

I’m not going to try to understand Pegula’s motivations.
