Rangers have lost 15 out of their last 19 games. What would you do if you were Dolan (the owner of the team) or Drury (the GM)?

Organization needed a reset. Lots of guys got complacent walking into the playoffs every year.

Literally not even mad at this. Give young guys top minutes, trade under performing contracts and restock the draft capital. Re attack next year with all the extra cap space

Drury tore this organization apart in the blink of an eye.

No trust between players and management, calling each other out in the media and the coach is stuck between a rock and a hard place.

To top it off, the Rangers’ cap situation is terrible, and they don’t have much coming up in the system making it very hard to maneuver.

As a fan of an opposing team, I’m glad Dolan hasn’t shown any indication of wanting to let Drury go.

To play devil’s advocate- I feel he was dealt a bad hand and simply made it worse. Who made Trouba captain, did that happen under his watch? Either way, that’s playing from behind the 8 ball, when your expensive captain absolutely sucks and refuses to leave. I also never thought this was a cup team, so it looked fine as long as they were coming close.. but then they’re ass to start the year. And now that captain is playing even worse, he absolutely needs to go away but still is gonna Titanic the hell outta it and go down with the ship. That core that got that success looks lost now, too old, but what do you do? And benching Kakko at that specific time was dumb, dunno if Drury had a say there, but after Kakko went off he’s gotta go or some other move needs to be made- it’s a circus, in short, I just dunno how much is Drury’s fault vs. him just responding poorly to the issues others in the org have created.

Trouba being captain is not a decision he made, but I never thought it was a huge problem. Yes, he underperformed compared to his contract value, but he wasn’t the cause of the Rangers falling apart.

They got rid of him by circumventing his NMC by a legal but underhanded way. From there, team morale was down in the toilet.

The Kakko saga was silly, it could’ve been handled in many other ways (for example, telling Kakko he was on the trade block hence the healthy scratch).

But the team sucked before the Trouba trade, too, so I’m extending the grace and saying maybe Drury trying to trade him in the offseason had already rattled the room. A) soft team, if that’s the case, B) Trouba was a problem, imo. Maybe not the captaincy, but you gotta do a lotta work to mask that wasted money, roster-wise.

So I think he handled it as poorly as possible, but I also think he kinda walked into a high-stakes mess. Supposedly a team on the cusp, but I don’t see it, led by a caveman you desperately want off the team, and apparently the team doesn’t like that.

Not sure how this Zac Jones being in over Schneifer is much of an improvement or him being scratched and complaining is bad on the team

That chart does not really reflect what’s going on in New York because Chytil and Schneider are not problems. Jones gets one game every couple of weeks, then is forced to sit and watch Lindgren and Miller (and now Borgen) be active detriments to the team. To be clear, I’m not saying Jones is the cure to what ails the Rangers. What frustrates the fanbase and now Kakko and Jones is that the vets get to go for a skate with impunity while the younger guys are forced to play perfect hockey or sit. And the vets are not getting it done. Chytil was player of the game against the Panthers and the coaches still went to Mika as the extra skater.

So why is Laviolette still there exactly?
Because this is the second Drury hire this vet core has visibly quit on and the third coach in five years. Drury is done appeasing the players. I think Drury and Lavi should go too, but this is the current dynamic.

Before there was an NHL commissioner, there were NHL presidents.
So I guess the trophy commemorates them all collectively, since 'presidents' is plural? While by definition excluding all the more recent executives who held the title of commissioner? Seems like a good candidate to be renamed

There's actually only been one commissioner, and it's ol' Uncle Gary.

My last thread got shut down. I guess it was considered premature.

So if you were Dolan or Drury in this moment, what would you do? What would your analysis of the problem be?

These guys just came from competing in the ECF and winning a President's trophy. But clearly, they are struggling.

You've got a goalie who wants a $12m/year contract who just lost 5 straight games. You've got Trouba who blocked a trade over the summer and is playing AHL-caliber defense with an $8m cap hit.

You've got Miller, Fox, and Lindgren, all of whom look like they are playing like a shell of their former selves.

You've got Zib who looks lost out there and is signed for another 6 seasons at 8.5m.

Your team has relied on special teams and goaltending to carry them over the last 3 seasons.

The big problem is this - for the past 2 weeks or so, this team has arguably been the worst team in the NHL. Arguably, it's been longer than that but goaltending has totally bailed them out.

I would go so far to say that if Panarin or Shesterkin were not on the team (just one of those two) then this team could have the worst record in the NHL. They have carried everyone else. Special mention for Quick who has also played brilliantly when starting.

So if you ran this team, what would you do?

Dolan - fire Drury

Drury - pack
