Confirmed with Link: Rangers extend D Will Borgen

I find it ironic how you are constantly complaining about people bringing up Kakko, yet it's you who brought him up in this thread. It seems you have taken the opposite approach to those who are pissed about the Kakko trade, and are trying to justify this extremely unnecessary contract with it.

4.1M is simply too much for a 3rd pairing defenceman, which Borgen ultimately is. The clauses suck as well.

He's playing like a solid 2nd pairing defenseman. A Kraken fan said this is what he was on the Kraken before this year. Angry Rangers fans who hate Drury:

*Angry Ranger fan noises*
It's just a very risky contract. You see him being a cost-controlled #4 for years to come. I see this turning into the Goodrow contract starting from 26-27 at the latest. Granted, with the cap going up and us not being able to spend it on anything anyway, who cares I guess...

You can't just never take a risk. The risk isn't THAT high. This isn't Trouba at 8 million. Mind you Trouba was seen as a top pairing guy. But you sometimes have to take a risk. If he's Stralman or even Klein it was a risk worth taking. If he's Brendan Smith he's still not going to be the guy that closes our window or whatever. 4.1M with the cap going up to me is not some terrible gamble. I just don't understand why people are acting like we gave him 8 million or something.

And yet it's enough to say that Kakko is this stud that we let get away.
???
I believe you have the wrong poster? I haven’t commented on Kakko since the trade, but what I will say is I would rather have the 2nd round pick or better at the TDL.
This is one of those rare opportunities where you can eat your cake and have it to.
Drury could have had a handshake agreement with his agent on the same terms that Borgen signed. Trade him at the TDL and sign him on July first.
Right now we could have had Jason Robertson for the last three seasons, another Dallas 1st round pick and still have Chris Kreider.

This seems like a fantasy. When has this even happened? I know it's not on the same scale but this reminds me of people being upset that we traded too much for Fox because we could have signed him for no assets. Once someone is out of the building you no longer have the same control. Getting upset over fantasy scenarios that never or barely ever happen seems silly to me.

Considering Lindgren would be 5.5 + and if not the Trouba trade, 8.0 this is a steal. Think of it like that and it’s not an issue. Now to resign Urho to a 5 year 3.0 contract for 5 years and trade Lindgren and Jones

the main board is being very weird about this very mundane extension

The main board always feels like entering an AA meeting that's serving booze.

The only place I venture to outside of here is History of Hockey. If I disagree with someone there, they at least tend to present things with thoughtful arguments and data and can disagree in a fairly adult manner.

$4M will be like literally nothing when the cap shoots up. team has been better since he came on board, and if trouba was movable borgen will be movable if it comes to that. good move
$97M next season. Last night, EF said the cap will be $100M plus in two years. All of these players are getting paid. The cap won't be $80M plus for the next 4 seasons like it was during the Covid CBA. The players paid back the Covid debt. Revenues are up. New CBA linked to revenue again.

When will Atlanta and Houston be announced for expansion?

As of now just shy over 74 million committed to next season.
You can go with Bettman’s number of 92.4 as per the current CBA or Friedman’S reporting “next year’s salary cap could actually be pushed well over the 5% growth limit up to as much as $95M to $97M.” *
*Which is subject to an agreement between the NHL and the NHLPA.
However it falls the team needs to sign:

3 LD
1 6/7 D
4 forwards
1 backup goalie

That’s 9 contracts on 18 million (known number) or Friedman’s speculation of 21M to 23M.
Either way offer sheets could be incoming.
Just ask Edmonton.
Drury once again bidding against himself. This time on a player that has had a good two week run. Not the sample size you should be basing decisions on for a billion dollar corporation.
You can assume Nerard and Othmann get a long look, so that's two of your forwards on ELCs, plus Edstrom and Rempe won't cost much. Kayliev could be a cheap option if he fits OK and even Cuylle's raise won't be crazy.

IMO there'll be at least $9m for the D, and that doesn't take into account a Kreider move

Edstrom is 21 games away from qualifying as a group 2 RFA.
That puts him, along with Cuylle and Miller at risk of being given offer sheet(s).
Adam Edstrom is a 24 year old 6’6” forward with speed who takes the body. I’m guessing there will be 31 GMs out there that will be climbing over each other to give him along with Miller and Cuylle offer sheets.

Every offseason we hear the same thing and every offseason the Rangers players avoid offer sheets. How could this be possible!?

BTW, if Borgen does fall off the face of the earth. He's paid 4M and has a movable contract. I just don't understand why people are so mad about this other than because they have no impartiality when it comes to Drury and are still mad about Kakko. Like, at its worst this deal won't be an anchor and is movable. The anger is completely misplaced.
The good news is by then we should have two 2nd round picks available to attach to the trade to get rid of him.

Would have preferred a shorter term for that AAV, but this is a contract they should be move in a couple of years without issues. Borgen has been solid and I prefer holding on to him rather than trading for a mid round pick which would likely turn out to be nothing anyway.
