Confirmed with Link: Rangers extend D Will Borgen

I understand the fear of getting burned on a sample but imagine if they locked Stralman up immediately.
Right. The thing with Borgen is he was good before. He was having a bad year with Seattle but it's not as if this current level of play came out of nowhere.

He was heading to UFA. If he continued to play well and then hit the market, I would wager that someone would pay him even more than what we did. As has been stated by many, with the cap going up it's very possible this contract becomes a bargain.

To me, it's pretty low risk. The main boards is acting like he got a supermax.

Worst case scenario, they get rid of him. They just moved a worse player on a worse contract.

I just wish we would stop handing out trade protection for average to middling players like it was sweeties.

If that was the difference or not between him signing, to a big market (should-be-competitive) team in NYC, I am sure we could have survived without Borgen.

I would feel a whole lot better about this if Borgen was a LD. Then things would be crystal clear. Now something needs to be done with Schneider because he can't be 3 RD forever. And paying your 3 RDs $18 million in a couple years doesn't seem possible with a $11 plus million goalie. Hope Schneider moves to LD.

And then you sign someone else, and that player wants protection, only they probably have more leverage to get it.

The protection on Borgen's contract is a non-factor. It's an NMC for one year, then it drops every year until there's no protection in the final year.

I didn't need a 5 year deal here. If you want to give 5 years, this could have waited. Also, giving trade clause after a few weeks is just absurd to me, especially for Borg. We don't have to hand them out to everyone.

I looked at PuckPedia and of the 720 NHL players they list, 243 have some form of trade protection at the moment. That number has been steadily increasing over the years and will only grow higher in the future, unless there are changes bargained in the CBA or teams collude to stop giving them out.

If you include goalies it's 267 of 792 players.

Bonus criteria for defensemen:

Does he regularly score 30 points or more?
If yes - great deal, underrated transition game
If no - overpaid

I also think Drury wanted to sign a dman last summer if the Trouba contract was moved out. I feel like the beat mentioned Dillon as having interest last summer, and he went to the Devils for 4 million a year for only 3 years, but he is older.

Players are only eligible for trade protection in their UFA years. So if you look at players that are 27 or older, it’s actually 433 skaters and 52 goaltenders. It looking like pretty much any contract covering UFA years will have trade protection, unless it’s a player with no leverage that is looking for a spot anywhere.

Exactly. Only the worst UFAs get no protection. And as I've said repeatedly, Borgen's protection is a non-factor. Only next season does he have an NMC, and if we are looking to trade him next season, the entire contract is a screw up irrespective of the trade protection.

In 2 years, it becomes a 10-team list. That's not enough to stop us from trading him if we want to.

Borgen at 4.1M with a $100M cap is fine 3RD $. I’m not worried about it at all. Keep him around he’s a good locker room guy and a good player. I wanted him at like 3.5 so it’s a little higher but whatever
