I mean Goodrow is also an established, known commodity. He's been a regular for several years on some good San Jose teams before joining the Tampa juggernaut and really cementing his reputation as a heart-and-soul guy.

Blackwell, to his credit, has worked his way up from being a mediocre prospect coming out of college to a good AHL player to a guy who had a nice NHL season. But, that's just it--it's one season of production on a mediocre team that had room for a fairly one-dimensional middle six offensive player.

The two are only separated by a month but by 250 games of experience.

Drury gets it. I’m really really comfortable knowing this guy knows what he needs to do. We absolutely needed Rooney more than a blackwell. Been saying this is who we should be keeping. Would be tough to lose his pk. Can play center and wing and he had a very good season. I like him.

we’ll keep one of Gauthier or Blackwell but I want no part of seeing Blackwell in my top 6

This was the other reason it was fine leaving Blackwell exposed. Kids pick up the time if he’s claimed.

Also there seems to be an impression from some fans that goals and point production are everything. They are important for sure but there’s so more to constructing a winning team than that.

Rooney checks a lot of boxes and his versatility is needed more than Blackwell.

I don’t have a strong opinion on these decisions either way, but I am a bit surprised at all the praise Rooney is getting in this thread.

Seemed like most posters hated him a few weeks ago.

Which literally means he's a good candidate for a pay raise.

Sure, yet...

To put it another way, I feel like if Goodrow was on the Rangers last year and they failed to make the playoffs, we are here discussing how important it would be to even extend him even doubling his cap hit.

Rooney is far worse than Blackwell and doesn't have the potential of Gauthier. Boo

It’s about the team layout . Drury wants guys to know what’s expected

Goodrow and Rooney are clear bottom 6 , pkers w energy

Gauthier and Blackwell are better fit in top 6 roles but NYR has enough talent for that department

This expansion draft came at the near perfect time for the Rangers. Really, one of the best years this could have happened to us. Mostly because a huge portion of our future are not eligible, ie Laf, Kakko, Kravtsov, Miller, Fox, Jones and Shesterkin. Their ineligibility allowed us to keep some players we otherwise couldn't have, like Hajek, Georgiev and Rooney. Really, perfect timing.

I honestly won't mind losing Blackwell that much. He was a very good bottom 6 player this past season. But big picture, it's not a huge loss and he can be replaced. I actually prefer Gauthier long term. And having Goodrow and Rooney seems way more important as we will need their grit down the middle and on the 4th line. I assume they would find a way to play them both on that 4th line, while Chytil stays as 3C.

All though, I must say if we can find a way to move Strome, to get another, better 2C or to play Chytil as 2C and get a suitable 3C, I would be most happy. As I think Strome produces a lot of "empty" points, or at least, doesn't really change us from losers to winners.

But Chytil really, really needs to work on his faceoffs and his physicality. He's not a small guy, so I have some hope he can learn to play more physical in the future. Faceoffs though, fairly important for centers, especially when you don't have wingers like JT Miller (still so upset we traded him when his potential always seemed obvious) or Wheeler who could take faceoffs. I hope they are really pushing him hard in that dimension. Don't see why he can't improve drastically.

On a side note, how good would this team look if we still had JT Miller to play 2C? Ugh.... was always one of my favorites and now proving his talent with the Nucks after we wasted and misused him for years. Hated the trade to TB, which still looks like an overall loss to me, just because of how good Miller has become. Was actually shocked when TB moved him to Vancouver, just after he started playing really well, for just a conditional 1st, a 3rd and Mehh Mezanec. Reminds me a lot of Wheeler actually, when Bruins traded him to the then Thrashers who were moving to Winnipeg.

Yeah the fact that we're debating the loss of Blackwell or Gauthier is pretty great, relative to what some other teams go through. We've been very fortunate in both expansion drafts. I mean last time we made out really well and exposed Fast, Lindberg, and Grabner, right? And I think at the time of each respective draft, each of those three were better than Blackwell and Gauthier are now.

This is really about as good of a situation as you can get.
Yes, TBL going to lose their entire 3rd line this offseason
Coleman - UFA
Goodrow - UFA + traded
Gourde - probably will be selected by SEA

You’re right. But I believe some room will open up in the top six either by trade or injury. So that’s why I hoped they’d keep Gauthier. Anyhow, it’s not a big deal either way.

Yeah. Miller would be a great center for Panarin actually. Come to think of it. Good point.

JT Miller didn’t “get it” until after he was traded a second time. And the team that acquired him that second time was rumored to be heavily shopping him again this past year. The fantasy of him way outweighs his reality.

I wouldn't mind the player JT Miller is today, I don't for a second miss the 2018 version of JT Miller.

And as you alluded to, without those trades, Miller would still be that same player.
