Confirmed with Link: Rangers claim F Jake Leschyshyn

After December 11th, the Rangers had 33 points in 29 games, Seattle had 35 points in 27 games.

The Rangers had the priority if they wanted him.
Thought it was points percentage. No?
Wouldn’t change things, I suppose. But just checking.

Tolvanen still had a $1.45M cap hit on December 12, which is likely why he wasn't in more demand. Too many teams (including us) pinching pennies at the moment. Five years ago he wouldn't have even been waived. Now teams bend over backwards to open up a couple hundred thousand in space.

It's beside the point, though--the Rangers were apparently looking for someone cheap that they could slot in at 4C and on the PK. That's not what Tolvanen is. It's what they hope Leschyshyn is. Why this is being discussed as some either-or scenario is beyond me (to say nothing of the fact that the moves happened one month apart).

So we let a high risk, but high upside kid in a dire position of need in Eeli Tolvanen slide to Seattle, but pick up this bum?

I really don't get this team sometimes.
More often than not, the only thing that makes sense about the Rangers is that nothing makes sense. One step forward, two steps back. Tolvanen was a player they have coveted for awhile, and let him slip away to the team with the next waiver claim. But yes, let's use our waiver claim to pick up some AHL fodder lol.

I am still waiting for another awful trade that will land us an old, washed up 3rd pair defenseman who will be a UFA at year's end. He will produce nothing and we will hear "It's actually good that we don't notice them on the ice." We are notorious for those types of trades.

We let the Tolvanen opp pass for two reasons:

1) we were actively and are actively trying to accrue cap space for the deadline. Picking up ET would severely limited trade options at the deadline. Sadly the timing wasn’t right. Furthermore If we were ok with adding ETs cap hit we would have just kept Reaves in the first place.

2) the team is already juggling a lot of young talented kids who are top 9 or bust. Picking up ET makes no sense unless you’re moving Kravtsov or Laffy. Which would be a huge mistake asset wise.

That’s why no Eeli.

As for JL… he’s half the cap hit of Eeli. So the cap space accrual continues even with the pick up. That said, he’s likely only getting a 5-10 game try out here. But if it works out, His contract is for 2 more years after this at league minimum so if he gets sent down and somehow clears waivers he’s a heck of a pickup for HFD and he’s locked in for 2 more years.

Finally with the big club, he potentially fills a role as another 4th line center option who PKs and he’s younger than Carpy. So there’s logic to the move.

That said, i don’t know if the move ultimately is a good one as I don’t know if he can be a contributor here even if he seems to fill a role. But it’s not a situation of Eeli vs Jake.

Interesting because, when Rydahl was up for Habs game, HE was listed w 15, as he wore in Camp

Rydahl has to change his number then.

Could be worse. Derek Armstrong used 4(!) different jersey numbers across 3 seasons where he only played 7 games as a Ranger

Folks saying Seattle was already ahead of NYR then
I cant say
As of today, they are +13, NYR +12

And after spending time in Hartford the Rangers traded Armstrong for a conditional pick in 2003. Armstrong spent the next 7 seasons with the LA Kings and 6 seasons where he played more than 50 games with the Kings. What is funny is that he couldn’t play on those bad Rangers teams and did not get a real chance, but was able to play in the NHL with the Kings. Their pro scouting stunk then and it stinks now. I wonder if the Rangers have other players in Hartford, that would be in the NHL now if they were with other organizations.

FWIW in the 12 games Brodzinski played the Rangers were 9-3-0. He was only a minus in one of those 12 games--a -1 in the Minnesota game the other night. Whatever line Brodzinksi was playing on wasn't bleeding goals like we've seen in the past couple years with guys like Reaves, Carpenter and Hunt. He almost never puts up points but he's a responsible defensive player who's been pretty good on face-offs (44-36), takes the odd penalty kill situation. As 4th liners go he's hardly been the worst one the last couple years. He's been better than a few IMO--the above mentioned and Blais for instance.

I think the scouting group like Jake and they may see this as a good opportunity to not only add a depth forward this year but a viable option for the 4th line next year. He has 2 more years of team control and is only 23.

Vince is using his fo% from this year - where he’s taken only half the draws he took last season. His career fo% is 48%, which is not ‘solid’.

48% faceoff percentage at his age is actually pretty good. Normally young players struggle in the dot

This. Brodz does his job and doesnt hurt the team.
