Post-Game Talk: Rangers @ Caps: Pick your 3 stars (even Nash if you want, I can't stop you)

Brad Richards. His contract ends in 2020. He will be 34 in the spring. Why does it matter if the cap is going up? Why have a bad contract on the books because the cap is going up and there are no players in free agency? The team won't be better with him next season. He has 9 goals in 39 games. Talk about lowering the standards. Amnesty buyout. Nice and clean. You're going to have him on the roster until 20 if he doesn't retire. Two small centers with Stepan or another small winger in the top six. Which will it be? Is Brassard on the team too? Then it will be the fault of the coach....again. Don't start with hoping Richards suffers a career ending injury so he can be put on long term IR. The Rangers aren't a Cup now or in the near future.

Can't deny that there is se logic behind that too...

Lowering the standards is a good way of putting it. He is on pace for 57 points, which is even worse than his point production his past two seasons as a Ranger, yet I've seen some fans insist that he shouldn't be bought out. It would be sheer idiocy if the Rangers didn't exercise the amnesty buyout on him.

On TV, I was surprised at how few Ranger fans there seemed to be.
It appeared there were very few, much less than at the 3/10 game and even the October mid week game.

One would think a Friday during the holidays would bring out a lot of NY fans, is it possible there lousy play made this big an impact?

How about we stop talking coaches and talk about this:

IF Lundqvist was playing up to his name on paper and IF Nash was playing up to his name on paper, this team would be a whole lot better.

Nevermind the loss of the Pack Line and Prust identity or the seemingly indifferent head coach.

Nash and Lundqvist are both sucking and need to step up.

I think it would be safe to say that if Hank was his normal self, we would have easily 3-4 more wins which puts us comfortably in a playoff spot at the moment in a horrible division.

Nash? What's normal for Nash? We don't really know but if he was living up to expectations I'd say we could be chasing the pens for first.

As painful as the result of the game was, it wasn't really that bad. There was a lot of good things including some great saves by Talbot and the Rangers were winning the game and should of won at the end. There was a few unfortunate moments that spoiled it. First there was that deflection by Stepan, which happens in hockey time to time. Then a kind of breakaway where a goal was scored from a very close distance. Though Talbot should of had it, but many goalies would of allowed that goal IMO. After that there was a dumb play by Moore and a tricky hard shot which Talbot could of had it too. Also we lost Stralman, who was great for us lately. Other than that Rangers were winning. A few corrections and you can have a decent team. But of course instead, AV will play Hank now and Rangers will drop 3-4 games below .500 until AV gets back to his senses. I'm very skeptical about the playoffs this season.

Decent team or championship team?

*snip*

I'm very skeptical about the playoffs this season.

The latter cancels out any relevance to the former. This is not a good team, not a playoff team, and in the event they squeak in thanks to their pathetic division, they aren't winning ****.

Who cares about taking the "good things" away from yet another loss in a disastrous season.

Agreed. Good things dont mean **** when we lose

Decent team or championship team?

Decent team that can make the playoffs and go a round or two. To become a championship team they need to do this:

1) Fire Sather

2) Trade Hank before Jul 1 under the current contract to avoid the paralyzing cap hit for the next 7 years.

3) Add some toughness to the team. Rangers lack physical play.

4) Trade Nash, he has been useless in the playoffs anyway.

5) Richards needs to go too. He will only get worse with age.

6) Love Cally and Staal but they became injury pron and it will probably get worse. Trade them while there is still a chance.

7) Get some young hard working guys out of the above items.

Then....., maybe then you will have a legit Cup team.

Let's add Stepan to the mix. He is virtually invisible. I watched last night in complete frustration. We dominated that game, but we never get a gift goal, and we gave up two or three softies. Our second, third and fourth lines are playing extremely well, as is the defense for the most part (especially if we were healthy there and MDZ was the 6th defenseman - as a 3/4 he sucks, as a 5/6 he's much better). The problem is the top line. If Stepan or Nash were playing worth a s**t, Kreider would be an unstoppable weapon and we would be a top-flight team, lacking only an enforcer. The difference between mediocre and very good is slimmer than most believe. Of course it goes without saying we need our goalies to stop giving up weak goals every single game. But I'm not as pessimistic as some, especially given the weakness of the division (I also think Toronto may drop out of the wild card race - their goal-tending and defense are sub-par). Plus, we have money and assets to get a rental at the trade deadline.

Is that it? Should only take 5 years, give or take 10 depending on how long Sather lives.
