Post-Game Talk: Rangers @ Canadiens | 3/30/13 | March 17th, 2009 Is All I Have To Say

Guys around the league were using various NHL team and other public facilities. The point is, every player in the NHL had access and the financial means to rent as much ice and make use of facilities as they needed to stay in shape.

It's not like NHLers were locked up in a dungeon for four months while the lockout was going on. They all had reasonable means to stay in shape - if they chose to put in the effort to do so.

I don't think all the guys on our team did as much as they could ha.ve

I'm a Torts apologist haha. I really doubt he'll get fired because of this season, just because of the lockout. However, if this continues past this year, then I agree, a change is needed. But the "clown" doesn't suck.

I don't think he sucks either, but he has mis-read his team all year. I think it's obvious that this isn't our year. The question will be in the coming days is who stays & who goes at the dead line. I doubt we are going to see any of the big names like Gabs get dealt they will all be role players that get traded.

Love it.

Only coaches I would even consider replacing Torts with this season:

Scotty Bowman
Mike Babcock
Joel Quenneville
Michel Therrien
Barry Trotz
Paul MacLean
Ken Hitchcock

One is retired. The rest are not leaving their respective teams any time soon. So, in my mind, Torts is the best we're gonna get. Now, if things continue to suck 20-30 games into next season, I'd be open to exploring other options. But right now the talk is pretty ridiculous when the major issues are roster problems and players not living up to potential.

What's John Mclean doing? J/K!

If you will remember, Avery left after the end of the 2008 season. After the Dallas incident, Avery came back to the Rangers and actually helped them sneak into the playoffs. Torts scratched him for Game #5 for "disciplinary" reasons, yet Torts couldn't control his emotions either.

There was no Stepan in 2009-10, no Hagelin in 2009-10. When Avery got to play, he usually produced something. The problem was that Torts never trusted Avery because Torts didn't like the **** stirring Avery was really good at.

Avery was a much better hockey player than Torts and a lot of people here gave him credit for. The reason nobody ever picked him up was he was damaged goods. The only place he could have ever played after the "sloppy seconds" remark was New York.

Why are you complaining about 2009-2010? Avery got plenty of time and finished pretty high in scoring on the team. No idea what you could remotely ***** about during that year.

Avery was a mediocre hockey player who benefitted from playing in the right place at the right time. He was simply pushed off the team due to the play of those around him (and the emergence of Prust). I'm sorry that you're upset that Avery is not a Ranger or that you think Torts was mean to him.

But you you are quite wrong.

Also, this is my last time even mentioning Avery in this thread. If you want the last word, go for it.

Agreed. Though I can do without Hitch.

Avery tweet aside, there need to be changes made.

This isn't a typical Torts team. He's a motivator. His defensive system works with players that naturally can't score, know they can't score, and therefore are willing to do other, dirtier, aspects of the game to try and make up for that. His system ISNT what hockey should be about. Throwing your body aimlessly to block a puck that can sometimes be moving up to 90+ mph is not how this sport was made to be played. And it's not just an aspect of his system... IT IS his system.

You have goal scorers on this team. Use them. Players have their defensive responsibilities, I understand that, but making them adhere to a system (not fit to their abilities) or be benched for not throwing your body aimlessly in front of pucks is not indicative of a good coach. He's incapable of making adjustments, he's incapable of getting the most out of his players abilities, and he's now incapable of even motivating his players (his best coaching technique).

This is not to take away blame from the team. The team has structural problems on its own. Not enough glue guys. No one fights for each other. Its disgusting. Some nights theres no heart or desire apparent to go out and play, let alone win.

Changes need to be made. Torts seems to be putting himself and his system above everything else. He's not even giving his players the chance to see if a different system can work, or at least a more offensively adjusted one. The blame lies on both the coach and the players but some type of shake up needs to happen before this becomes just another typical NY team that never fulfills its expectations.

Agreed on both counts.

It's a multi-headed problem on this team:

-poor GM choices in personnel (not replacing the heart and work ethic lost in the summer)
-poor adaption by the entire coaching staff
-poor preparation by the players

One Cup in 70 (seventy) years should tell you something about the New York Rangers organisation. Jesus, this is supposed to be New York City not Wichita, Kansas.

Agreed. Though I can do without Hitch.

Put him last on the list for a reason. He's gotten **** for failing to adjust to a changing game, and I think some of that is justified. But he's done a bit of a better job recently - despite STL's struggles this season.

a 48 game season should have been ideal for us. The style of game the Rangers play would have had them hitting their stride around the 30 game mark that should have carried us though June. We just never got that really good momentum. We have played more like a glaicer. win 3 games, lose 2. Hard to make a positive mark that way.

Yep. It's incredibly frustrating.

It's not like this is just happening randomly. Combo between the players and the coach. Why were the Blackhawks like 19-0-3? Their coach kept them focused game in and game out. Clearly that statistic shows they have skill, but it also shows their coaches ability to get them to work as hard as they need to every single game.

Half the nights the players have no emotion. That's a big part on the coach. If the players are unresponsive to him, there needs to be a shake up... either him or bring players that will get the locker room to sway in his favor.

Excuse my French, but I'm gettin' real ****ing sick of Sean Avery.

Good on Stepan:

"Our problem isn't with our coaching staff, and it hasn't been," Stepan told the Daily News in the Bell Centre after Saturday's defeat. "And I think if you asked everyone on our team, they would say the same thing, that that's not the case here.

"Tonight, I thought we were OK at times," Stepan continued. "I thought we had a lot of chances to score goals. (Canadiens goalie) Carey Price played a pretty good game, they go up 1-0 early and we're kind of chasing again. But I don't agree with (Avery's tweet) at all, no. I think it's safe to say that all 23 guys on our roster would say that's not the case."

That's not French :P

Anyway, as I said, the guy probably has more inside info than any of us. He's very good friends with Lundqvist and probably quite a few other Rangers. If the players hate the coach, he'd probably know about it. Whether he's actually passing on that knowledge or just taking a shot at a coach that he doesn't like is another story.

Don't care anymore. Hopping on the St. Louis/Chicago bandwagon in the west and Pittsburgh for Malkin and Iggy in the east. We're a chore to watch. No entertainment at all.

It's not so much that I'm getting sick of Avery himself. He can say whatever he wants. I'm sick of the glorification of him.
