Anybody else feel like Will Cuylle looked really lost? Like he couldnt control the puck at all and could barely skate and just did absolutely nothing with his ice time?

I thought he got worse as the game went on after a decent start.

He's going to be a work in progress. Needs to change his game up a bit before making it to the NHL and the A is the perfect place to do that.

Trocheck is certainly a positive addition to the team in so many ways. My reservation though is that Panarin said the other day that he doesn't play at his best when the team plays a north-south game. To be creative he seemingly needs to play east-west. Trocheck seems a classic north-south center. So we will have to see how this goes. Likely an adjustment for each and it will be interesting to watch.

Gauthier is such an easy player to like. It would be so satisfying to see him convert on his chances. But, likely, it will never happen, Frustrating for us as fans, triple frustrating for him as a player. You wonder what is going on in his head, he had a golden opportunity last year to play regularly but after the trade deadline he didn't really play at all. Best thing for him would be to be put on waivers, claimed, and given a chance to play elsewhere. Wish it could be here, but he's had so many opportunities and failed to capitalize, Enigmatic for sure.

I was impressed with Kravstov two years ago and continue to be impressed; he has a real sense of positional awareness on the ice that either intuitive or perhaps learned, I would love to see him get extended time with Panarin and Trocheck once the season starts. I only question his ability to play offensively at a high level, We need him to do well.

Rydahl, with his size, speed and reach is more effective than Carpenter and it's not that close. I don't mind Carpenter being a 13th forward or being sent to the AHL. This issue here is that Rydahl can go back to AHL without waivers. So, he's likely to lose the spot even though he very much deserves it and is a better option. It's going to be about preserving depth moreso than who should win the spot.

As for Vesey vs Hunt -- I think Vesey is the better option not only because he PKs but also because he has more skill than Hunt. And if a top 9 forward gets hurt in game, I'd sooner want Vesey moving up than Hunt. Vesey doesn't nec drive offense, but he is far better positionally and has better IQ than Hunt and thus is a better compliment to skilled forwards than Hunt. But I'd be shocked if Vesey makes it over Hunt simply because of Gallant's previous allegiance to Hunt.

Kravtsov needs to keep playing. There are aspects of his game that I worry about, aspects that he needs to smooth out to become a permanent NHL player. These are things that won't be sorted out in a few games but requires legit patience. He legit should be starting in the AHL but we know that isn't likely on the table. Though it really should be. My biggest concern with him as a player has more to do with Gallant and Drury and what they want from forwards. That said, he does have a ton of talent. He just needs to keep getting into the dirty areas and winning board battles and doing even more to make quick, smart plays and focus in his own zone.

Also, we should just not allow any New Yorker to wear #22. Every guy that grew up a Rangers fan ends up in that number and are quickly discarded. Carpenter, Bitetto, Shattenkirk. Enough already. Brian Mullen didn't wear 22. Foxy doesn't wear 22. Let's learn from the past people!

I think you can play a combination of players together and have it work...doesn't have to be that EW can't play with NS players etc

And Panarin was mostly saying he thinks he needs to be controlling the puck and making things happen instead of getting rid of it so quickly or dumping it, etc. Which...I think he's half right, he needs to hold onto the puck and make plays and not just fling it in the direction of a teammate. He needs to hold onto it and make smart plays
So we'll see how that goes

The issue with Gauthier are all the little things. Being in better position in his own zone. Being better at taking the body. I know he's making a concerted effort to be more physical but it's been really ineffective mostly. He doesn't know how to gain leverage. He's not separating people from the puck. Most of his hits are of the a second too late variety and often the player side steps the majority of contact. I've always liked his speed and size. But he's just miles away from being a well rounded player that can play botto 6 minutes and be reliable enough for a playoff contender. I think it's time to move on. He should be going to a place like Arizona or Anaheim.

Add Thomas Pock to #22.

I'd like to be surprised but yeah Carpenter seems like the "we know what we have and if we went with Rydahl who knows maybe he isn't what we expect out of Carpenter!"

Vesey or Hunt I'm kinda eh on. I think Hunt is fine as a 4th liner. Vesey would be fine too. The bigger fourth line issue is how much Reaves plays and how effective he can be and who's going to be that center. Goodrow-Carpenter/Rydahl-Reaves/Hunt/Vesey ?

amazing range of "could be good" to "could be crap"

The issue with Gauthier is that he's a bad professional hockey player.

He needs to make a living being a veteran player for a minor league team or sign in Europe for bigger money deal than what he will make in NA

Not to make too much of a big deal out of preseason, but I have a genuine concern that 2/3 of our 4th line will be Carpenter and Reaves.

We may end up with the slowest 4th line in the league and it’s going to be a problem.
We have better options in hand so if we end up with this line we have no one to blame but ourselves.

with the way he played last night would Cuylle start in the ECHL? He really looked awful. I figured he’d be more aggressive. Besides that scrum at the end of 2ed, he was not noticeable. Sykora was more noticeable. Same with Othmann and Kravtsov was at times. Cuylle not so much. If Cuylle plays passive he won’t be effective. I hope not another Boyd Kane Dane Byers.

No.

He’s AHL ready. He’ll do well there.

Othmann was more noticable because he’s better. Sykora was more visible because he’s better at the things Cuylle needs to work on down in the A.

I thought he’d be better in preseason to be honest. He did okay when he was in the AHL cause of the pandemic. Thought he would have been much more ready to fight for a top 9 role. He has potential power forward type. I don’t think Cuylle can do well in a bottom 6 role. I think he needs to be with talented players to be successful. I get that vibe from him.

Vesey-Rydahl-Goodrow is how I'd like to see them go. I know Reaves will be there, yet perhaps he is rotated in and out?

I'm not really thinking if they waived Carpenter, Hunt, Gauthier, or Brodzinski, any of them would be taken.

I assume most, if not all, the other teams have their versions of those guys, and they'd have to cut (or waive) someone else from their NHL roster to make the claim.

If the Rangers 4th line is good this year, like they play a solid two way game, even if they do not score a ton, yet are able to play in the O-zone for chunks of time, that would be nice, and I think those three give them the best chance to do that.
Yes there are a ton of decent players out there because of the flat cap and roster squeezes everywhere. I suspect all of those fourth line candidates would make it through waivers. Mayyyyyyyybe some team would consider plucking Gauthier but even that would surprise me.
