Not to be lost in this: 40 save performance for Ward. And really, the 2nd goal would be the only one he'd like back.

Brad Fast, Casey Borer, Tlusty, Chris Terry, Nesty, Brock McGinn, and now Zykov. All Hurricanes players who either scored their first career goal in their first career game, or first with the Hurricanes. Feel like I'm missing someone.

Derek Ryan.

There were 5 in 2002-2003:
Brad DeFauw (not just one, but two goals)
Damian Surma (injured celebrating the goal)
Tomas Kurka
Mike Zigomanis
Jeff Heerema

Also big ups to Aho, kid is the ****ing man. Also feels good to beat the Rangers, we don't beat them very often. Now if only we could win at MSG.

Did Tomas Kurka do it? Brad DeFauw? Are these real names?

Surma was the one I was going to mention. That was an awful season to watch, but all those rookies scoring first goals were great. And Surma was just such a nobody that it was great. GOAT Hurricane with a point per game for his career. I actually looked up the video on youtube for it after Zykov scored cause it was my first thought.

I'll always be partial to Ryan too because I picked him to score first and won his signed puck.

Doh!, Yeah I knew I was forgetting someone recent.

Holy ****, some of those names. Zigomanis was part of the Doug Weight trade right? Jeff Heerema, one pick later the Avalanche drafted Alex Tanguay.

I would've bet money that he had only played in that one game where he was injured, and never played again. Had no idea he had a second cup of coffee a year later and got an assist. GOAT is damn right!

He and Boulerice, yep.

Staal's lazy cousin. You can just imagine that kind of lazy.

What is really striking is how terrible all of those prospects were. The kids on this forum that have fun bashing the likes of Boychuk, Bowman, Dalpe, etc have no idea that those guys actually had hope around them. As funny as that hope seems to everyone now, the prospects before them didn't even have that. It was bad.

As funny as that hope seems to everyone now, the prospects before them didn't even have a modicum of hope surrounding them. It was bad.

Magnus Kahnberg went for Weight too. Talk about a guy that we waited for years to come over. He was a pretty solid scorer in Sweden. Same thing with Niklas Nordgren who we finally got to play in the Cup year before shipping him off for Recchi.

Amen to that. Remember that time when our top prospects were Jeff Heerema, Nikos Tselios, Igor Knyazev, Mike Zigomanis, and Rob Zepp? Now THAT was a hopeless time.

Though admittedly I still have a soft spot for Zepp. Especially since the dude used to post here on HF.

You know, you're not required to report. Would be a dose of their own medicine after Hayes and Vesey.

Not report? What kind of Mickey Mouse fan franchise do you think we are?

I *still* don't know what the deal was with Igor Knyazev. He was given one of the most prestigious endorsements that a U20 prospect can get when he was named Defenseman of the Tournament. Check out the company he keeps:

2016-2017 Thomas Chabot (D) 1997 Ste-Marie, QC, CAN Ottawa Senators
2015-2016 Zach Werenski (D) 1997 Grosse Pointe, MI, USA Columbus Blue Jackets
2014-2015 Vladislav Gavrikov (D) 1995 Yaroslavl, RUS Columbus Blue Jackets
2013-2014 Rasmus Ristolainen (D) 1994 Turku, FIN Buffalo Sabres
2012-2013 Jacob Trouba (D) 1994 Rochester, MI, USA Winnipeg Jets
2011-2012 Brandon Gormley (D) 1992 Murray River, PE, CAN Arizona Coyotes
2010-2011 Ryan Ellis (D) 1991 Freelton, ON, CAN Nashville Predators
2009-2010 Alex Pietrangelo (D) 1990 King City, ON, CAN St. Louis Blues
2008-2009 Erik Karlsson (D) 1990 Landsbro, SWE Ottawa Senators
2007-2008 Drew Doughty (D) 1989 London, ON, CAN Los Angeles Kings
2006-2007 Erik Johnson (D) 1988 Bloomington, MN, USA St. Louis Blues
2005-2006 Marc Staal (D) 1987 Thunder Bay, ON, CAN New York Rangers
2004-2005 Dion Phaneuf (D) 1985 Edmonton, AB, CAN Calgary Flames
2003-2004 Sami Lepistö (D) 1984 Espoo, FIN Washington Capitals
2002-2003 Joni Pitkänen (D) 1983 Oulu, FIN Philadelphia Flyers
2001-2002 Igor Knyazev (D) 1983 Elektrostal, RUS Carolina Hurricanes
2000-2001 Rostislav Klesla (D) 1982 Novy Jicin, CZE Columbus Blue Jackets

It's crazy to think that almost everybody else on that list played in the NHL and played well. The fact that he won it as a draft eligible is even more insane and probably parses the list down even more.
