It sounds like San Diego wanted him back and they gave up a prospect that the Pirates liked in place of Wolfe.

Pichardo finished last year on an absolute tear in A+ ball at only 21, where he had a .927 OPS in his last 41 games from July until the end of the season. I absolutely see the appeal with him from the Pirates, he's a potential riser going forward.
You kinda feel for Wolfe. This is the life of a professional baseball player. Traded to a new org, then the new org is "ehhhhhh" on you and flips you right back to the original org that traded you.

A reclamation former 2OA? I’ll take it and I’m assuming it’s him and Davis for a while since he can’t go to the minors.

Bart seems worth the dart throw for a change of scenery and depth, but it probably indicates that the team doesn't think a ton of Delay. Sanchez did depart after not making the team, so it partly could be just a well-timed opportunity to shore up the depth, but I would also think that Delay's defensive chops last year give him a bit more of a leg to stand on as prototypical backup defensive-oriented catcher.

That said, better safe than sorry if you have an option to use. Curious to see how he looks. I think he had a pretty nice spring training.

Missed that Stumpf says the corresponding move for Bart is Delay going on the injured list. Wonder if it's a phantom injury to basically preserve the depth and keep Delay around with the team? Seems unlikely, but you never know.

Yeah the Delay news makes the Bart trade make a lot more sense. I understand the appeal with Bart, but he's been truly awful in the majors and I can't imagine the Pirates would send down Delay to have Bart as the backup. Delay being injured explains the move entirely.

If Delay's injury is minor, then I think Delay to Indy could still be in the cards, especially depending on what's up with Grandal.

The depth in Indy is Carter Bins, Eli Wilson, and Grant Koch, so if one of Davis or Delay were to end up hurt, having Bart in the mix is still better than not. Obviously if Davis were to get hurt, it would be a massive blow, but catcher depth is really difficult to come by, so taking a flier on Bart makes some sense.

Drawing it up in an ideal sense, you hope Grandal and Delay will not be out for too long and then you DFA Bart and maybe get the chance to keep him around. More likely, a worse team takes a flier on him for nothing, but for now at least, I would assume that he'll get a small amount of rope until Grandal's situation is clarified, even if Delay is a better option on paper due to defense (though it's not like he's a world beater of a framer or anything).

I think it's more about Bart being awful in the majors than Delay being particularly notable in the majors. With Delay, Statcast isn't a huge fan of his defense (+2 OAA overall) and his bat is obviously atrocious. The problem with Bart is that his bat is just as terrible but he's also a bit worse defensively than Delay.

It's hard to get too huffy about it because it's one backup catcher versus a slightly worse backup catcher, but I do think Delay is ultimately the better player and should be in the MLB over Bart.

Bart doesn't move the needle at all but I like what it demonstrates. Normally when guys go down, they shrug and plug in whatever jobber is floating around in AAA. Whether Bart is useful or not remains to be seen but to me it demonstrates that they are actually trying to win this season, a refreshing departure.

I'm not super optimistic about them actually playing today, it's pouring in DC right now. Even if it stops raining by like 6, I feel like the field is going to be absolutely soaked.

First off, hopefully they do play. Second.. interesting to see the lineup. Facing a righty you would think Jack/Rowdy are automatic starts. And probably are. Does this knock Joe out of the lineup, who's been crushing it at leadoff? DH him? Cruz leading off despite not the greatest start?

Yeah I think it's just a question of timing. If Grandal is back soon enough, then it makes sense to float Bart for a bit even if Delay is a better option. If it's more of a long-term thing with Grandal, then it might make more sense to find a veteran catcher to add to the mix at Indy since Delay is more familiar with at least several of the pitchers.

Strickland isn't much to give up, probably a guy who could be depth or turn into an MLB reliever at best (I know nothing about him at all, I am just going with draft profile and cliche). It could be that we see a little something in Bart, but I imagine it's more that the timing worked out to have more of a solid depth group than already starting to tap into the guys in Indy with Delay seemingly dealing with something.

I agree with this lineup. I am confident Joe can pinch-hit for either Suwinski or Tellez in a leverage situation.

Yeah that's the exact lineup I want to see versus righties, so I agree with that 100%.

Just hope they actually end up playing the game today.
