What a game. These guys have some gusto now.

:arr:

5) Davis is going to take a step forward at the dish this year.

Not only at the dish, but also behind the dish. I don't think he'll be an outstanding defensive catcher or anything like that, but there's nothing there that makes me think he can't be an everyday catcher. He's at least decent defensively as a catcher.

I'm assuming McCutchen is done after this year, but Davis spending 60-80 games at C and the rest at DH should be the plan going forward. Endy has position flexibility too, you could even play him at 2nd every now and then.

Davis has looked better than expected. I think Grandal will do decently well with 2 starts a week as well, once he's healthy.

On Endy, let's see how the bat progresses. As of now I wouldn't put him above Triolo and Peguero as a pure hitter. To say nothing of Termarr.

Yeah I didn't mean Endy as their starting 2B, I meant Endy occasionally getting games as the 2B. He'd be the primary starting catcher, but because you'd want Davis to be catching a fair amount, you'd also be playing Endy at 1st or 2nd to give him extra ABs.

I'd want something like 60 games catching and 80 games DH for Davis, and 100 games catching and like 20-40 games between 1B, 2B and DH for Endy. Although at the same time, catching 100 games is already a pretty hefty workload for Endy, so maybe he can just be a DH or sit otherwise.

The thing is, if we get skenes and jones rolling with Mitch Keller pitching somewhere in between first half and second half 2023, and the bullpen stays intact, I think we win the division.

My main concern is poor fundamentals. Bad defense, bad baserunning, etc. you can’t give away outs and you can’t let teams extend innings. Obviously everyone makes but we really need to tighten our shit up

Yeah this start has told me that if they're aggressive with calling up Skenes, I think they either win the division or get a wildcard spot. The bats are there, this level of hitting will obviously not continue but there is legitimate talent from both righties and lefties with this team.

The bullpen is terrific and they look like they have lineups that can both beat up on lefty pitchers (Joe, Taylor and Olivares having a significant impact) and righty pitchers (Cruz, Tellez and Suwinski having a significant impact). They just need to get effective starting pitching.

I agree. It's hard to take a longer view at the moment because we haven't really seen any bad series or bad week, and have also been the beneficiaries of some terrific luck. Without luck, I don't know that we win yesterday or today, but at the same time, in both of those games we hammered opportunities that still came in order to really ice the game.

The talent is for real and Jones flashing front of rotation upside is a pretty serious boon that makes literally having an ace in the hole that much more exciting. It's way too early for this kind of talk, but we should at least in principle have the depth to acquire some support by way of a rental pitcher at the deadline.

We've got momentum now which is a really exciting thing and a massive opportunity given what's slated on the schedule. We've also got a good mix of players who have been together for a while vs. come from other situations elsewhere. Tellez and Taylor add here off the field, and hopefully it creates the kind of dynamic where we can keep the good vibes rolling while focusing on the game in front of us.

I don't think it's out of control to say that the expectation should be for Keller to put us in the position to win this series tomorrow and threaten for a sweep on the getaway day Thursday. While the bullpen does look really good, we still haven't seen a ton of games like today where it's closer and we need to defend a lead with the starter coming out after 5. With Roansy blowing the lead, we were fortunate to be able to turn things right back and still seize the W.

I have an optimistic feeling that some more good times are coming on offense, as Davis is someone who I think can take over the middle of a lineup for a while, and we still haven't really seen Cruz with an opportunity to get 3 or 4 ABs against RHP. No disrespect to an old friend, but Trevor Williams looks like prime rib on that front.

It's too bad the weather is going to be garbage this weekend as this Orioles series is obviously shaping up to be pretty exciting. I think their lineup is going to rake against Falter and Gonzales, but hopefully we can continue to score enough to be competitive. Just too bad it's going to be in the 40's all weekend, something that will undoubtedly depress turnout on Saturday and Sunday.

Weird that they cut bait on wolfe so fast.
Im not exactly high on the guy but whats the point in trading for a prospect then pulling the ripcord yhat fast?

It sounds like San Diego wanted him back and they gave up a prospect that the Pirates liked in place of Wolfe.

Pichardo finished last year on an absolute tear in A+ ball at only 21, where he had a .927 OPS in his last 41 games from July until the end of the season. I absolutely see the appeal with him from the Pirates, he's a potential riser going forward.

I only took a cursory look so you very well might be onto something. The year long numbers werent anything that stood out but he is young so maybe their is some helium there.
