I just rewatched that inning, I don't think I've ever seen a run scored like the Pirstes 5th run. The throw by Betts was amazing, but it was so good that Smith tried to swipe at the tag and missed it before Castillo could score.

Nice win, but I don't know how Shelton could justify sending Bednar out for the 9th there. I imagine he won't be available for a while after throwing 50 pitches tonight.

This was obviously the most pitches Bednar has ever thrown in a game, and the second highest with the Pirates is 20 pitches less than what he threw today.

He'll be rested the next 2 games. So that's 2 days plus an off day. I imagine he'll be available Friday when they get back home.

I understand the decision. We had a lead once and blew it and were gifted another shot at the W. The players want Bednar out there as he's the best P you have in that situation. To lose by going to a lesser pitcher would be very deflating.

The next move I want to see is Castro going down for Bae. The former is not producing and making too many miscues in the field and on the bases.

Bae has been the most well rounded offensive player in Indy and can play numerous spots.

Also, have to give props to Marcano. His defensive play tonight was fantastic in the OF. Natural infielder and yet he was very good in left. And of course the 3 run bomb.

LOL @ the Oneil Cruz SS crowd.

Just booted another routine grounder. 2nd of the game (fielding/throwing) and 15 on year.

Jumped off that train with the ridiculous number of E's lately. He's headed to another position soon IMO. Bucs likely massaging the ego to get the acceptance that's been impossible for him so far.

Cruz is playing his way into being a 1B/DH for me. I don't care about what kind of athleticism you have if you're botching plays with that sort of regularity.

I've heard comments from people that he looks super uncomfortable in the OF and he obviously can't stick at SS. The only position he has left really is 1B.
IMO Cruz looks uncomfortable because he is. He's probably not a SS, but can't let go of being the Unicorn. Until he acknowledges that, dude's not gonna be comfortable anywhere.

Ego can be a terrible terrible thing....

I would imagine technology had something to do with this. The ability to accurately measure how stressed a player is physically, well that's just becoming routine stuff IMO.

I'm beginning to wonder if Shelton might not develop into good Manager after all, seen some signs recently. We're presently drafting 10th if things stay the same rest of season. I find that somewhat improbable given the nature of our roster.

Shelton is making good decisions more often than last year. That I'm positive about.

I agree with this, though I still loathe his lineup selections and constant shuffling. I'll have to go around the league and see if other teams are moving players around with remotely the same consistency. Some of it may be that our lineup has sucked for a good portion of the year, and the best player, Reynolds, has been shit, relative to last year, certainly.

Either way, hitting (and baseball in general) is all about repetition. Getting into grooves, and moving guys, from 7th, to 1st, to 6th, to 2nd, night in and night out, is just plain odd. Maybe it's a supercomputer or advanced analytics telling Shelton to do these things, but I find it odd and quite frankly detrimental to the lineup/production.

I remember Bae had great batted ball skills. I also felt that he had more defensive ability than a lot of our other versatility players. Like he would look alike he belonged in CF.

Bae's pretty much hit every level he's been at. He's .298/.807 over his career to this point in 1000+ PA. This year though, he's bringing some legitimate pop along with the contact. His splits are amazing. If Marcano deserved a call up for his performance in AA, Bae is even more deserving given his production.

If you want to understand how bad Cruz has been at SS (yet we have nudnik's across twitter, actual paid writers mind you, glossing over this) take a glance at this.

Here is the fielding % range of all qualified MLB SS's.

1. Dansby Swanson - 2E - 203 chances - .990
26. Tim Anderson - 9E - 161 chances - .944

Cruz has 13 errors on 132 chances - .902

Essentially, Cruz is making an error ever 10 chances he gets, or about 2.5 games. That's pathetic and not going to fly at the MLB level.

He's had 2 errors in LF in 7 starts there, FYI.

I highly recommend this video and channel.

I wonder if Keller is experiencing what Burnes did in 2019 with his 4-seamer. Keller has good spin on the pitch, but it isn't getting whiffs as often as it should.

Maybe Keller should try developing a cutter, too. The dude has nothing to lose at this point.

Chavis has been great. Another guy producing on the cheap at the ML level. Cherington is ahead of Huntington. And has more talent in the pipeline coming.

We're almost surely going to need another 8-9 runs though to have a shot.
