Gorski's one of those prospects that could really fit in nicely with strong outfield D, reasonable play at 1B, and power one can dream on. Made it back early from the pulled quad, stole a base and crushed a homer in his 1st rehab game.

Termarr Johnson is also fine, had a pinch hit last night.

Solometo is probably my favorite low level player right now. Kid is really advanced for a teenage SP. Has feel for his pitches, generally shows quality location already and I think there is definitely more velo coming.

Also, Termarr is 2-2 w/this nice oppo rope 2 bagger.

Anyone want to get involved in an effort in Pittsburgh to get rid of the Nutting's? I'm toying with the idea of investing time into this.

Honestly, it won't work. He has no scruples and he has stated he feels the team is a family heirloom that he wants to pass down to his kids. So, until he decides to pass the leadership onto his kids and if they give a crap then maybe things will change, But as long as he is in control, nothing will change.

He can't be shamed to sell unless he did something socially awful like Marg Schott or the guy that owned the Clippers.

It's a cash cow, he will not sell.

You do realize Mark Cuban said he would run the Pirates basically the way that Nutting does, Again the Problem is MLB doesn't give a f*** about small market teams

Buddy of mine sent me this. DK discusses it and how it could happen. I wouldn't take the lead, but if my guy's serious I'm gonna help him out. It would have to be well organized and long-term, probably take years.

MLB is mos def the biggest part of the problem IMO. I'm not going to entertain the idea of taking them on though.

I mean, in theory a wealthy person could run the Pirates with disregard for profit as any money they would lose would be a drop in the bucket.

But finding a billionaire who is willing to lose money is like trying to find a forest without trees.

It is finding someone to run it as a break-even business as an operation, knowing the investment will appreciate. Realistically Nutting is clearing $40M annually. Find someone who made their money elsewhere, and better yet is still making money elsewhere.

Also realistically we may have an inferior front office as compared to Cleveland, for example. Or Tampa certainly. Give BC another year and if the team doesn't win 70 and the farm system doesn't remain in the top 10, move on

you were the one saying Nutting is the problem were you not?

He is one of the main problems, yes. But what does Mark Cuban have to do with what I said?

For myself, as @DocEmrickSkitters also mentioned, I'm just looking for an owner who will run the Pirates as a break even business. Not to use is it to funnel money to their other businesses.

If we could get an owner who will dip into their own coffers and spend above the break even line, especially when the team is a contender, then great. And I don't care where they are from.

Another Billionaire who sid he would run it the same way, But thanks for paying attention

SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO if nutting spent 50 Million more would they make the playoffs??

If Bob has such a long term view of the Pirates, maybe he can set a long term budget. Say he'd agree to commit $1b to the Pirates' salary over a decade. If the team spends $50m/ year during the "rebuild phase" (~5 years), there would be "rollover" to boost the back half to a more competitive figure during the "payoff phase".

Ultimately, when a franchise has an owner who lacks of a sporting spirit, that certain sort of competitiveness, there's a malaise or institutional lackadaisicalness that infects it. If the owner doesn't really care about winning, it's not likely the team will.

There's a large difference between Billionaires willing to lose money and Bob Nutting.

The Nuttings are insanely cheap people, they even fly coach to save money. Give me a regular Billionaire taking "some" profits most years and occasionally taking a loss when the window presents itself. That would be a huge upgrade over Bob Nutting and his minions.

It's only partially a small market problem here, the Nuttings are just as big an issue as MLB for true Bucs fans IMO. And they're cheap plastic people. They don't represent our City in any way, shape, or form most care for.

I have Peralta in one of my fantasy leagues so today was good.

Cruz getting absolutely wrecked by Rogers was sad. I think there's a ceiling to how good a guess hitter can be.
Hayes is woeful offensively and since I don't believe a replacement-level offensive player can actually be worth 3-4 WAR annually, I would identify a front office who believes in it and move him there. And he is regressing to a replacement-level guy, make no mistake. Dude sucks in the batter's box.

Miffed that we didn't see Suwinski or Castro today.

Ripping from Bucsws2014 on PP because he makes compelling points that I'm fully in agreement with having caught a dozen rookie games from Strawberry back in the day.

"Early last week I got into a discussion on Cruz’s ineptitude being similar to Darryl Strawberry’s at the 200 PA mark of their rookie year (not counting Cruz cup of coffee last year). And Straw was pretty bad – barely above Cruz. So I did a comparison of the two.

Strawberry vs Cruz through 200 PAs:
BA: .199 vs .198
OBP: .275 vs. .249
SLG: .403 vs. .401
OPS: .678 vs. .650

Cruz has 31 games left this season. Here’s what Strawberry did in his next 31 games:
BA: .295
OBP: .375
SLG: .571
OPS: .946

Here’s what Cruz has done in the six games since reaching 200 PAs:
BA: .273
OBP: .360
SLG: 546
OPS: .906

Now, six games is capital S small sample size, of course. But, the template is there and we might be in for a monster September."

I've had the feeling lately Cruz has turned a corner in learning how to be an MLB hitter. I too believe we will see good things from him rest of the season.

Just from the eye test, Cruz looks a lot more comfortable ever since he's been regularly leading off. It fits better with the kind of player that he is, and granting that it might not be doable vs. a lot of lefties, he really needs to stay stapled to that spot going forward, since it will maximize the reps. This is true even against matchup LHPs deeper into starts, since like every other LH masher in the league, Cruz will continue to see LHPs out of the bullpen. It's quite literally the main reason most of them are employed in MLB.

I'd like to look at things over the course of the sample running from the Phillies series to the end of next weekend, which is a little over two weeks and includes the run up to presumably being leadoff most games. He'll certainly see a lot of good pitching vs. the Mets and Cardinals, and the Jays are probably sending Manoah, Stripling, and Berrios, who are all pretty solid, though Berrios has struggled. But unless we align with David Peterson or Jordan Montgomery, the LHP threats will all be bullpen guys, even if that means the starters might include Scherzer and deGrom.

Nearly every hitter has regressed this year. Could be the growing pains of a new approach? or old fashioned bad coaching. I wish I had the faith in the organization to figure it out.

Tim seems to think the issue is not Andy Haines or the players but, predictably, Neal Huntington.

Reception to this article is mixed to say the least. And it's not my POV, but is a POV nonetheless.

I think the comments pretty well cover all that's questionable about that article. I'm not buying the company line, either

It's getting a little late to blame the past regime, 35 months on.

It would actually just be much better if the hypothesis was mental/pressing too hard and some bad luck mixed in. That would be more feasible.
