Given it was covid (likely had symptoms if he had to rehab) gotta imagine he's very close now. Marcano should be next guy up, followed by Bae but I'm guessing it will be Yoshi and Newman instead.

With Chang not playing against a LHP tonight, writing is on the wall that he'll be swapped for Newman. That's pretty straightforward, and then I think it's an open question how things shake out after that.

It's probably easy enough to swap Park for Marcano. I wonder a little bit if we'll let Yoshi rehab longer and see what's up with VanMeter, who is starting at DH tonight and I think notably played 1B yesterday. I am forgetting the exact arcana of the rules about rehab assignments, but maybe there's a scenario where we are seeing if VanMeter can earn his position and it's more Yoshi who he could supplant.

As much as Yoshi could provide pop, there's no upside beyond this year really, and it's not like his contract is that much to just eat. If the assessment is that VanMeter might be a plausible platoon with Chavis, then he's controllable for three years.

Yeah, three bad ABs there against Corbin. We need some crooked numbers tonight if we're going to have a chance with Bednar out. Luckily Quintana was able to limit the damage there.

No excuse for the poor throw (though I think a 1B can scoop that) but I'm actually more intrigued how Cruz responds the rest of the game. I am violating the problem to laser focus on every single thing he does, but with the bad chase to get behind in the count and then the strikeout + the error, I want to see him tighten things up and finish the game better, regardless of the results.

Glad Quintana bailed him out. I worry a little bit that Corbin, despite having horrible stats, could settle in here.

I feel like it's kind of a curse that Cruz was so hyped up before joining the majors this year, because even though his stat line is still overall fine, I'm finding myself more and more disappointed with what he has shown so far.

Anyone else that was OPSing .650 at SS while playing solid defensively would be really encouraging (even with his error today, his defensive metrics so far are all really impressive), but the hype the Pittsburgh media put on Cruz just makes you want more from him.

Again, I think it's way way way early to conclude anything from batted ball events so far. That AB started better and then Corbin just beat him. He still has 4 extra base hits in a week of games and looks comfortable in the field and at the plate. I truly think some of it is just a laser focus on everything he does. I'm confident that he will settle in.

I mean, Corbin has a 6.60 ERA and has been one of the worst starting pitchers in baseball in the last 2 years.

Is there a laser focus on him? Of course, but that's because of how hyped he was coming to the MLB. His overall results are perfectly solid for a SS, but the hype made you expect more.

I want to see the same roster with above replacement level coaching. Andy Haines had a pretty shit record as a hitting coach in Milwaukee. Look it up. Why would he be doing any better here? Marin? What's his claim to fame again?

I'm just over watching good players suck here and then immediately start producing much better results. This happens far more often than not.

Tip of the cap to Quintana though. Nice rebound game for him.

Who recently falls in this category?

I don't know of a single guy who's been on the team for the last 2+ seasons who got way better after leaving.

Edit: I answered my own question after looking. Bell and Musgrove obviously fall in this category, but Kuhl is having a terrific season this year as well.

Josh Bell ring a bell? Dude was traaaash here for the bulk of his career especially leading up to his trade. Now he's OPSin'g in the upper 800's.

Um, Cole. Glasnow. Baz, Kuhl, Holmes, etc, etc.

Nice hitting Castillo! He's been heating up with power recently, really nice to see.

Yeah I had to look to see who was on the 2020 roster. Musgrove and Bell obviously fall in that category, but I didn't know Kuhl was having such a great season in Colorado this year as well. Considering that's in a hitters park as well, that's even more impressive.

I think you've had a lot of guys who were way worse after leaving Pittsburgh as well, though. Stallings, Frazier, Moran (although he kinda stunk here by the end as well) and RichRod fall in that category.

I'd add, even with Castillo showing some power recently, I really feel like he should be going down to AAA once guys start getting healthy. Not only will you get the 7th year of control, but he's also not hitting well outside of the HRs. He has 6 HRs this month, but only 9 hits in total.

Your OPS is still going to be dogshit if you're hitting .130 and not walking a bunch, even if you're hitting for power.

Those guys are all older veterans as far as the age goes. The guys who didn't perform after leaving really weren't surprising sans Frazier. It's the guys who look at and go, he should be better, sometimes much better, and yet they often peak after leaving us. Quickly.

Great outing from Crowe there -- that's the kind of inning that could get a decent haul for him from a team looking for a bullpen weapon.
