Yeah, it is getting pretty old knowing every ground ball Rammer hits with runners on is a guaranteed DP. Especially when you're used to watching Marte, Polanco, and Cutch get down the line.Let's not pretend that there's some big offensive gap between Harrison & Ramirez. There's a huge power gap, but even then their SLG & OPS are almost identical this season thanks to the equally huge speed difference.
In big games a manager should scrap all stats and go with his most talented lineup. You can't win anything without production from your corner positions. I can live with either Pedro or Aram sitting, but both???
It was going to be a tough road to win tonight anyway, but with a bad lineup, I just don't see how you get it done. Manager who try to be the smartest guy in the room always end up losing. We all know what the obvious lineup was, but Clint had to show he smarter than everyone else. I have zero problem with him doing so in the regular season, but in a one and done scenario??
GAME OVER
I'm really having a problem understanding this SRod start. He's a pretty bad hitter to begin with but his numbers against RHP starters are these: .192/.229/.304/.533
This is also a guy who has walked all of 5 times in 240 plate appearances. Michael Morse has walked 23 times in roughly the same number of plate appearances. Sure Pedro's defense in this kind of game is problematic enough to sit him but Morse has been decent defensively for us and is a much better hitter/on-base guy.
We have 27 outs to score some runs in a 9 inning game. We shouldn't be gifting the Cubs with any. As for faith that Hurdle will pull SRod for a pinch hitter if we've got a man on base. I am sorely lacking.
I could not disagree more with your first paragraph - it's lazy thinking. This will likely be a pitchers duel, you don't start a defensive black whole at 1b, which rules out both Pedro & Aramis.
S-Rod surely blew chunks at the plate for several months, but he hit the ball hard with good results the last 10 weeks of the season.
I would start Morse in Hurdle's shoes, but it's a close decision, and I can't fault the logic of having our best defender there given his recent hitting.
this x100. i struggle to believe he couldnt have gotten better at fielding that position in the offseason. Its robbing Peter to pay Paul and nothing more. Hurdle is sacrificing offense for defense. He's banking on Cole keeping it to 2 runs or less. Probably hoping it can be a battle of the bullpens. I admit I was pissed when I saw the lineup but after thinking about it, it does make sense. Alvarez has no one to blame but himself for not starting tonight.

Do you think the Pirates are going to put together a string of hits in multiple innings to get them 3 runs tonight?
Cole will not shut out the Cubs, at least it's not likely. My best bet is he gives up 2-3 runs through 7IP.
SRod's numbers for the last 28 days: .158/.238/.316/.554 Given his "recent hitting" he should be our starting pitcher.
Yeah, as we say all the time, LF in PNC is CF in most parks. Hopefully Bryant has a tough time. Both lineups are strange. I hope Bryant and Schwarber implode in the OF tonight.
Don't know where you got your stats, but they are way way way off buddy.
He went .321/.387/.607/.994 in September.
