OT - NO POLITICS Rainy Weekends Always Get Me Down edition

I think our town must set a record for the most chain chicken restaurants in less than a 2 mile radius.

Zaxby's
Popeye's
Slim Chickens
Raising Cane's (literally next door to Slim)
Bojangles

Oh and they're building Chick Fil A in the middle of all this too.

Plus there are a handful of local chicken restaurants.

How many chicken tender joints does one town need?? lol it's ridiculous

I just tried Cane's last night, only because I was given a gift card for it. It was tasty but their menu is extremely limited compared to the other chains
In a way you are lucky. Here in the sticks of Western MA, there is only one fried chicken place and it is some new independent little shack. There isn't even a KFC anymore.

WTF is slim chickens?! At least I’ve seen/gone to zaxbys and bojangles!

They have a lot of sauces to choose from. Actually I like their gravy as a dipping "sauce"

Tried their chicken and waffle, was pleasantly surprised by the waffle quality

The jar desserts are also great but expensive

It's funny to me, because when I grew up in Maryland, there was McDonald's ten miles away and that was about it. On birthday occasions we'd usually go to Red Lobster or Bonanza 20 miles away for a "fancy" dinner lol (keep in mind this was the 1980s)

Now where I live, I can't even count the number of restaurants around here within ten miles. You could literally eat at a different restaurant every day for months

My step father and i took a tour to a couple of Oriole games at Camden. It still seemed pretty spread out. Of course that was roughly 30 years ago.

I moved to Florida the year before Camden opened. Never got back to see a game there, would love to do that sometime but doubt I ever will.

It was definitely spread out back then. Last time I was there was ten years ago and it looked completely different.

Used to go to Harborplace in downtown Baltimore, believe they tore down those pavilions. Sad.

355 years was a good run

The Hudson’s Bay Company closes for good on Sunday

It is a sad day but at least Canadian Tire outbid Ruby Weihong Liu for the intellectual property. She has snapped up 28 of The Bay locations across the country and intends to open a "new Bay".... whatever that means. I am glad a Canadian company is keeping the iconic logos, etc.

So, some of you know that my company was acquired at the start of the year, and my role was eliminated. I stayed on through May to help with the transition, but wrapped up today. I've never been unemployed before.

I plan on taking a few weeks to relax and recover and figure out what's next (from a beach chair) before diving back into the job search. I established an LLC to set myself up to do some consulting while I look for a FT gig and, hopefully, grow that into something substantial enough that I can leave the corporate world at some point.

It's a weird feeling. My career has been a big part of who I am, and to not have that is causing some...feelings. Trying to be thankful for this mid-career/mid-life reset. Definitely going to take advantage of the opportunity for some down time, since it will probably never happen again

Good luck!

I might be in the same boat at the end of the year. We moved to VT in 2019 and was able to transfer within the same company to work on projects up here and still make that sweet Boston $$. We tried to setup our spending like my job would go away at some point, plus we bought up here before COVID. Well, now the second project is ending and Boston is slow construction wise.

Still not really stressed about it, aside from this big beautiful bill and its impacts on the ACA marketplace. You guys are in the same house right? I bet that helps with some of the expenses to hold an older, lower rate mortgage.

Good luck! It’s happening to more and more of us, unfortunately.

Yes, we are still in the same house and have a good mortgage rate. We also bought (significantly) below our means because we didn’t want to be house poor. We have a very reasonable mortgage, low utilities, and no credit card debt.

I got a sizable bonus when the company sold and am getting another package when I wrap up. We had time to plan, so between what we put aside, my husbands income, me collecting unemployment, and supplementing as needed from my package, we have a long runway until we would need to worry.

All things considered, you're still in a good position because of these critically important life choices. Best of luck in your future endeavors. We are all cheering for you.

Sound like a good excuse to move to Cape cod

Had to go to Nashville for my vision therapy appointment today. Friend drove me there because me and highway driving are not a good combination right now. On the way back, we passed a truck pulling a replica of the Smokey and the Bandit trailer. I wasn't fast enough to get a picture but it was cool. Definitely unexpected lol. Just needed Jerry Reed hanging out the front window yelling "clear the way" at all the crazy traffic

No sign of Buford T. Justice
