Belmont at Aqueduct (New York):
  • Handle: $12.3 million.
  • Three Triples: Ricardo Santana, Jr. rode three winners. Trainers Rob Atras and shockingly Chad Brown, all on turf, also had triples -- the latter is intended sarcasm. Brown's success rate on New York turf has to be a staggering figure.
  • Chad Brown has won seven of the past 11 races in which he has entered at New York, though that includes multiple starters in some, for a record of 16 7-2-1.
Far Hills (New Jersey):
  • Annual Event: The 103rd annual Far Hills Steeplechase Race Meeting.
  • Handle: $431,000.
  • Race 5: Snap Decision (Graham Watters/Jack Fisher) won the $250,000 Grand National Steeplechase in a three-across-the-wire performance at a distance of 2 5/8 miles.. The $2 exacta paid a healthy $44.40 with 5-to-2 and 2-to-1 shots on top of the ticket while a remarkable $8.00 was paid in the middle for the runner-up.

Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Card: 12 races of which three were Florida Thoroughbred Breeders' and Owners' Association six-figure purses.
  • Handle: $6 million.
  • Edgar Perez rode two first-timers to victory.
  • Race 1: Dime Papi (Edgar Perez/Ronald Coy) won the opener in a debut performance at 38-to-1.
  • Race 7: McKellen (Edgar Perez/Jose D'Angelo) won a debut race at 8-to-1, the lone first-timer in the race.
Keeneland (Kentucky):
  • Handle: $15 million.
  • Race 9: Emery (Tyler Gaffalione/Brad Cox) won the Grade 2 $350,000 Raven Run. The 3-year-old More Than Ready filly is 7 5-1-0 lifetime and is now a multiple graded stakes winner.
  • Race 7: Brunacini (Luan Machado/Matthew Sims) set a stakes-record-time with a victory at the imposing odds of 28-to-1 to capture the $300,000 Grade 3 Perryville Stakes. Brunacini is 2-for-3 lifetime with three races at different Kentucky tracks. Brunacini, a son of the now-deceased Santa Anita Derby winner Dortmund gave that sire his first graded stakes winner. Brunacini was named after George Brunacini, a business partner and former fiancée of breeder Emilie Fojan who was killed in a plane crash at Lexington (KY) airport many years ago. Machado was suspended three days earlier this week [to be served December 23-25] for an infamous ride on October 16 in which he misjudged the finish line in what should have been a comfortable victory at Keeneland. Sims, who took out his license last year, earned a graded stakes for the first time.
  • Mr. Kentucky: Tyler Gaffalione had three winners. He leads the riders' standings by five victories. The meet ends October 26.
  • Leading Trainers: Brad Cox has 10 wins (38%) to lead all conditioners, but Rodolphe Brisset has won eight times with 18 starters for a fantastic 44% strike rate.
Santa Anita (California):
  • Race 8: Sumter (Mike Smith/Richard Mandella) won the $80,000 Lure Stakes. Sumter ended a 16-race skid and last won on April 2, 2022.
Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Race 9: Dresden Row (Ryan Munger/Lorne Richards) won the Grade 3 $135,000 Ontario Derby.

Ascot (England):
  • Card: Six races of which four are Group I and one is Group 2. Included on the card are the final two Breeders' Cup "Wins and You're In" Challenge Series races.
  • Race 1: Kyprios (Ryan Moore/Aidan O'Brien) improved to 19 15-2-0 with a seventh straight victory to win the QIPCO BRITISH CHAMPIONS LONG DISTANCE CUP (GROUP 2). Kyprios has earned roughly the U.S. equivalent of $3.4 million lifetime and that includes a perfect 7-for-7 record in 2024. O’Brien said: “What can you say about him. Obviously the people around him, everyone who is around him have made it happen. There’s such a big team and they’ve all played a part. He’s a very special horse, something that we’ve never seen before, he’s relentless and has an unbelievable amount of quality."
  • Race 3: Kalpana (William Buick/Andrew Balding) won the $635,000 QIPCO BRITISH CHAMPIONS FILLIES & MARES STAKES (GROUP 1). This is a Breeders' Cup "Win and You're In" race. Kalpana is 8 5-2-1 lifetime and currently sports a 3-win streak.
  • Race 4: Charyn (Silvestre De Sousa/Roger Varian) won the $1.46 million QUEEN ELIZABETH II STAKES (GROUP 1). Charyn has seven wins in 16 lifetime starts including three Group I wins in 2024 in which he is a brilliant 7 5-2-0. Charyn was winless in seven starts in 2023.
  • Race 5: Anmaat (James Crowley/Owen Burrows) won the $1.65 million QIPCO CHAMPION STAKES (GROUP 1) at odds of 40-to-1. This is a Breeders' Cup "Win and You're In" race.

An Ontario-bred Woodbine shipper won the opener in New York for a 4% Canadian-based trainer. Among the losers was a Chad Brown runner and other local stalwarts such as Linda Rice, Christophe Clement and Hall of Famer Shug McGaughey.

Chalk up a other graded stakes win for Luan Machado. I believe he has now ridden three horses to graded stakes wins, just one in his career entering this weekend.

Belmont at Aqueduct (New York):
  • Dylan Davis continued his prominent year with four wins on eight rides. Davis was a 3% rider in 2012 when he rode for the first time. He is nearly 20%, which is a career-high if maintained, this year. He was roughly 12% lifetime entering this year.
Keeneland (Kentucky):
  • Rusty Arnold won three times including back-to-back stakes wins. At one point. spanning two days, the trainer won four straight races in which he entered.

i'm not sure when davis started riding at the level he's currently reached but i sure noticed it during the saratoga meet. trainers that hardly or even never used him on their mounts noticed as well. if guys named baffert and appleby who always choose the premier riders to ride choose to give a chance to someone like davis to me speaks huge volumes. chad brown lately has also been giving him more mounts.

the next step for him for what i like to see happen starting in 2025 is to get mounts regularly given to the ortiz brothers and saez at the big meets or big races at tracks like keeneland, churchill or the fairgrounds. maybe a couple of breeders cup mounts this year? imho at this point in time those 3 riders aren't that much better than davis. maybe a length difference tops. if compared to someone like prat, gaffalione, or the top european riders the length difference would be somewhere between 3-5.

Indiana has over 40 jockeys (mixed card) listed today for its Champions' card. Good track, excellent simulcast feed and today a worthy betting interest for anyone interested in both quarters and full T-breds. All dirt racing.

Good summary. He has the pedigree obviously in a prominent riding family. Let's see how he progresses from here but it helps to have the backing of trainers and owners as much as anyone and anything. He can be the next Manny Franco in my estimation, a strong New York rider with an occasional visit elsewhere but it is tough to knock off the reigning champs and their connections.

Let's see. Sheldon Russell's mount, for his wife, is scratched. He picked up the 8, a 10-to-1 morning line, for his wife in place of Jevian Toledo. The 2-year-old filly goes off the 2-to-1 favorite from a 10-1 m/l. A private purchase for noted orthopedic surgeon Joel Politti who is one of Brittany's top owners. And that was that.

Belmont at Aqueduct (New York):
  • Dylan Davis won three rides and hit the board seven times. He finished 8 3-2-2. Davis has a 13-win lead over Kendrick Carmouche for leading rider at the meet which ends November 3. He has struck at a 22% rate which is the leader among all riders with 15+ victories.
  • Race 7: Runningsonofagun (Joel Rosario/John Toscano, Jr.) was elevated to victory via DQ at 18-to-1 in the $175,000 Grade 3 Bold Ruler Stakes. My Buddy B (Luis Rivera, Jr./Krista Hetrick) was removed from victory in what was a very questionable decision. The removed victory cost the trainer, who took out her license last year, a first graded stakes win.
  • Race 8: Coastal Mission (Arnaldo Bocachica/Jeff Runco) won the $250,000 Grade 3 Forty Niner Stakes. The connections are based out of Charles Town (WV) and the West Virginia-bred won for the 14th time in 25 starts. Though he entered off a stakes win at Parx (PA), this was the first graded win for the 5-year-old. Runco won a graded stakes for the second time in his career, both at Aqueduct (NY).
  • Race 10: Tarifa (Flavien Prat/Brad Cox) won the $250,000 Grade 2 Mother Goose Stakes by a head.
    1729997495477.png

Laurel (Maryland):
  • Brittany Russell entered three races and won each including finishing 1-2 in the seventh race.
Keeneland (Kentucky):
  • Closing Day: Today ended the meet at what is perhaps America's most regal and attractive oval.
  • Handle: A Fall record $210 million handled.
  • Leading Jockey: Tyler Gaffalione who may be a finalist for Eclipse Award Outstanding Jockey of the Year. It is his eighth Keeneland title.
  • Leading Trainer: Brad Cox who may be the leading candidate for Trainer of the Year in North America. He established a meet record six stakes wins,
  • Race 8: Hit Show (Florent Geroux/Brad Cox) was surprisingly tested in the $350,000 Grade 2 Fayette Stakes but won nonetheless. Hit Show, the prohibitive favorite at 3-to-5, has been a hit in 2024 with four wins in five races. He has earned over $1.2 million in 14 lifetime starts.
  • Race 9: Brilliant Berti (Brian Hernandez, Jr./Cherie DeVaux) topped an all-DeVaux including 44-to-1 Depiction (Florent Geroux/Cherie DeVaux).
Santa Anita (California):
  • Race 7: Atitian (Hector Berrios/John Shirreffs) won the $200,000 Grade 2 Twilight Derby

Horse photos of the year are aplenty with photo finishes especially. But sentimental shots include my personal favorite horse right now -- Post Time: what a beautiful picture of a Frosted progeny. Here's rooting for Posty in the Breeders' Cup.

1730002307868.png

And Adrianne DeVaux winning in New York in September with her first starter. To this day, it is the only horse she has sent out.

Emma-Jayne Wilson, one of Woodbine's top riders, suffered injuries in a race Friday after her mount was overcome by a cardiac event. Wilson's injuries have not been specified as yet (that I saw) but she underwent tests yesterday. Here's hoping for the best.

  • Brad Cox won stakes at Belmont/Aqueduct (NY) and Churchill (KY) today. He accomplished graded stakes wins in Belmont/Aqueduct (NY) and Keeneland (KY) yesterday. He has four wins in nine stakes races the past two days.
Belmont at Aqueduct (New York):
  • Card: Seven of the nine races were stakes with purses of $150,000.
  • Handle: $9.4 million.
  • Race 10: Mama's Gold (Romero Maragh/Jimmy Ferraro) wired the field as the longest shot on the board at 40-to- to win the $250,000 Empire Classic Stakes.
  • Race 9: Spirit of St. Louis (Manny Franco/Chad Brown) won the $200,000 Mohawk Stakes. The 5-year-old gelding is 5-for-5 lifetime on the BAQ turf and sports a career mark of 13 9-3-0.

Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Brian Hernandez, Jr. and Tyler Gaffalione each rode three winners.
  • Race 9: Good Cheer (Luis Saez/Brad Cox) looks good as she won the $200,000 Rags to Riches and 10 points toward entry to the Kentucky Oaks in a third win in three lifetime starts,
  • Race 10: Sovereignty (Junior Alvarado/Bill Mott) roared from last-to-first to win the Grade 3 $200,000 Street Sense Stakes and with it gained 10 points towards entry into the Kentucky Derby.

Santa Anita (California):
  • Closing Day: Today is the closing day of the meet.
  • Leading Jockey: Juan Hernandez with 25 wins.
  • Leading Trainer: Bob Baffert with 14 wins. George Papaprodromou, third in wins with 12, had a strong meet at 31%.
  • Race 4: Smooth Cruisein (Ricardo Gonzalez/Karen Headley), bred in Florida and sold for a mere $41,000, shocked the MSW field of five starters, which included two Bob Baffert and two Michael McCarthy (one that cost $825,000) runners, as the longest shot on the board at 20-to-1. The winner chased down $775,000 Mellancamp (Kazushi Kimura/Bob Baffert) in the stretch.
  • Race 6: Cipriani (Juan Hernandez/Bob Baffert), a $875,000 Bernardini filly, made a stirring debut to win the MSW.
  • Next up for Southern Cal is Del Mar: 10/31/2024-12/1/2024 which includes the Breeders' Cup Nov. 1-2.
