Small field but an exciting conclusion.

Race 8, a graded stakes on turf, has been canceled at Belmont@Aqueduct. The race will be redrawn for next Sunday. There are now 15 Breeders' Cup races scheduled for Oct 4-6.

Weather today has played with track conditions at Laurel and New York.

  • Teacher and Pupil Have a Perfect Sunday:
    • Brad Cox went 5-for-5 with wins in Oklahoma, Kentucky and New York.
    • Brittany Russell, once his assistant, went 4-for-4.
  • Brad Cox's barn is a staggering 11 8-1-0 (73%) since September 27
  • Brittany Russell's barn is smoking as she is 22 13-1-1 (59%) since September 20.
  • George Papaprodromou, California-based, is a brilliant 11 7-0-0 (64%) since September 27.
Belmont at Aqueduct (New York):
  • Weather: Dreary. It is days like these that make a Breeders' Cup in November dicey and yet here we are in September.
  • Race 8: Canceled and re-scheduled for October 6.
  • Race 2: Ways and Means (Flavien Prat/Chad Brown) won the Grade 2 $250,000 Gallant Bloom Stakes.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Brittany Russell completed a perfect 4-for-4 day. Not many trainers have that success on one card.
  • Jamie Rodriguez rode three winners.
Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Closing Day: The meet ended today. Onto Keeneland.
  • Leading Jockey: Tyler Gaffalione with 24 wins.
  • Leading Trainer: Brad Cox with nine wins.

  • Brad Cox shipped two horses and both won the two biggest races on the card.

Belmont at Aqueduct (New York):
  • Card: Two graded stakes including one Breeders' Cup "Win and You're In" Challenge Series race.
  • Handle: $6.6 million.
  • Luis Rivera, Jr. has been attached to some prices. Today, he had four mounts which resulted in a 52-to-1 shot winner and a 28-to-1 placing.
  • Race 2: Lady Firefoot (Luis Rivera, Jr./Melanie Giddings) won at 52-to-1.
  • Race 3: Three-across-the-wire as noses separated the top three finishers.
  • Race 4: Won by a neck.
  • Race 5: Mentee (John Velazquez/Todd Pletcher) won the Grade 3 $175,000 Futurity Stakes. The City of Light colt is owned by Mike Repole though not via a public auction. One to watch as the calendar unfolds. This is a Breeders' Cup "Win and You're In" Challenge Series race.
  • Race 8: La Mehana (Kendrick Carmouche/Christophe Clement) won the $200,000 Grade 3 Waya Stakes. All six horses in the race were foaled in Europe and the two French imports finished 1-2.

Laurel (Maryland):
  • Race 3: While the two shortest prices were duking it out in the stretch, along came the longest shot at 46-to-1 to win.

  • Race 7: One of the tightest finishes this day, good race but a 50-to-1 got picked up on the last bob.

Keeneland (Kentucky):
  • Opening Day: One of the most anticipated meets on the annual calendar in what is arguably America's most prestigious racing region, Lexington, KY.
  • Handle: $15,290,955 which is up nearly 5% from the comparable date in 2023.
  • Meet: October 4 through October 26.
  • Next Stop in Kentucky: Churchill Downs from October 27 through December 1.
  • Card: Three graded stakes of which each is a Breeders' Cup "Win and You're In" Challenge Series race.
  • Brad Cox's hot barn continued with three wins. Since Sept. 27, he is 24 13-4-2. He will be in the mix yet again for Trainer of the Year in North America.
  • Race 7: Federal Judge (Flavien Prat/Brad Cox) won the Grade 2 $250,000 Ogden Phoenix. This is a Breeders' Cup "Win and You're In" Challenge Series race.

  • Race 8: May Day Ready (Frankie Dettori/Joe Lee) won the Grade 2 $250,000 Jessamine Stakes. The $250,000 2-year-old Tapit filly is 3 3-0-0 lifetime. Tapit, as a reminder, is 23 years of age and still productive. Lee was Kiaran McLaughlin's former assistant until the latter made a recent switch from training to agent. This is a Breeders' Cup "Win and You're In" Challenge Series race.

  • Race 9: Immersive (Manny Franco/Brad Cox) won the $600,000 Grade I Darley Alcibiades Stakes. The 2-year-old is a multiple graded stakes winner with a 3 3 -0-0 mark, She is a Nyquist filly homebred by Godolphin. This is a Breeders' Cup "Win and You're In" Challenge Series race.

  • Racing Day: Eight Breeders' Cup Challenge Series races and 17 graded stakes in North America.
  • Steve Asmussen, the winningest trainer in North America annals, had a quiet Saturday in terms of volume but he sent out four horses (two in one race at Keeneland) and won all three races in which he entered (two at Remington and one in Keeneland).
Belmont at Aqueduct (New York):
  • Handle: $14 million.
  • Weather: Beautiful! Can we have the racing gods and mother nature combine forces and have a Breeders' Cup in New York with this weather?!
  • Big Balloons: The $1 Pick 6 paid over $121,000.
  • Dylan Davis rode three winners, all within the card's first five races.
  • Christophe Clement, usually a formidable turf trainer in New York, had a big day winning two graded stakes.
  • Race 5: Carson's Run (Dylan Davis/Christophe Clement) won the $500,000 Grade 3 Jockey Club Invitational Derby Stakes. Clement finished 1-2 in a field of six.

  • Race 6: Senbei (Manny Franco/Christophe Clement) won the $200,000 Grade 3 Turf Sprint.

  • Race 7: Scottish Lassie (Jose Lezcano/Jorge Abreu) won the $400,000 Grade I Frizette Stakes. This is a Breeders' Cup Challenge Series race.

  • Race 8: Chancer McPatrick (Flavien Prat/Chad Brown) came from back of the pack to win the Grade I $500,000 Champagne Stakes. This is a Breeders' Cup Challenge Series race.

Keeneland (Kentucky):
  • Handle: $22 million.
  • Tyler Gaffalione rode three winners and finished a solid day 10 3-2-0 including winning two graded stakes on the card.
  • Chad Brown won both graded stakes in which he entered but he was overloaded with stock as he had seven total. He finished 1-2-3-9 in one race and 1-4-5 in the other. The days of the Super Trainers can oftentimes be detrimental for handicappers.
  • Race 6: Our Shot (Luis Saez/John Terranova) won the Grade 2 $350,000 Woodford Stakes. Our Shot is a Pennsylvania bred who entered with nine straight losses and 18 prior starts.

  • Race 7: Zeitlos (Jose Ortiz/Steve Asmussen) won the Grade 2 $350,000 Thoroughbred Club of America Stakes. This is a Breeders' Cup Challenge Series race.

  • Race 8: Gina Romantica (Jose Ortiz/Chad Brown) topped the trainer's 1-2-3 finish in the $750,000 Grade I First Lady Stakes. Brown entered four in the race.

  • Race 9: East Avenue (Tyler Gaffalione/Brendan Walsh) went gate-to-wire and destroyed the field by more than five lengths to win the Grade I $600,000 Breeders' Futurity. This is a Breeders' Cup Challenge Series race.

  • Race 10: Carl Spackler (Tyler Gaffalione/Chad Brown) won the $1.35 million Grade I Turf Mile in gate-to-wire fashion. This is a Breeders' Cup Challenge Series race.

Santa Anita (California):
  • Handle: Roughly $10 million.
  • Bob Baffert and Phil D'Amato combined to win all four graded stakes with two wins apiece.
  • Bob Baffert entered five races and won three times. He finished 10 3-1-2 but the overloaded total in some stakes -- seven in two of the races -- is cause for concern.
  • Race 3: Non Compliant (Juan Hernandez/Bob Baffert) won the Grade 2 $200,00 Oak Leaf Stakes. Baffert finished 1-2-3 and had four of the six entered. This is a Breeders' Cup Challenge Series race.

  • Race 7: One Magic Philly (Antonio Fresu/Phil D'Amato) won the Grade 3 $100,000 Chillingworth Stakes. Sweet Azteca (Juan Hernandez/Michael McCarthy) finished last in a field of four at 1-to-9 and that set off some improbable payouts with no show wagering available:
    • Winner: $9.60 to win, $13.60 to place (paid more in the middle).
    • Runner-up $74.00 in the middle.
    • The $1 exacta paid $61.20.

  • Race 8: Hang the Moon (Kazushi Kimura/Phil D'Amato) won the Grade 2 $250,000 Rodeo Drive Stakes. This is a Breeders' Cup Challenge Series race.

  • Race 9: Citizen Bull (Martin Garcia/Bob Baffert) won the Grade I $300,000 American Pharoah Stakes. Baffert had three of the seven runners and finished 1-2-4. This is a Breeders' Cup Challenge Series race.

Woodbine (Ontario):
  • Handle: $7.8 million.
  • Vincent Cheminaud-Jonathan Thomas teamed three times and finished 3 2-1-0 with both wins their graded stakes pairings.
  • Race 6: Truly Quality (Vincent Cheminaud/Jonathan Thomas) won the Grade 3 $175,000 Singspiel Stakes.
  • Race 8: Mouffy (Vincent Cheminaud/Jonathan Thomas) won one of the most exciting races of the day in claiming the Grade 2 $250,000 Dance Smartly Stakes at 14-to-1.
  • Race 9: Patches O'Houlihan (Sofia Vives/Robert Tiller) continues the role of a Canadian sensation as he won the Grade 2 $250,000 Neartic. Patches is 13 11-0-0 lifetime and a perfect 4-for-4 in 2024.

Hastings (British Columbia):
  • Race 5: Apprehend (Amadeo Perez/Barbara Heads) won the $100,.000 Grade 3 BC Premier's Handicap.

What a perfectly timed finish for the 1 in Keeneland's third race at 49-to-1. Second-time-out for the winner who showed nothing in a debut performance

The $.50 Pick 3 paid over $7,000.

  • Calendar: The past three days were filled with high-level talents from Europe to North America, from California to Kentucky to Toronto to New York to Paris.
ParisLongchamp (Paris, France):
  • Card: Nine races, all stakes or handicaps, of which seven were Group 1 and five were part of the Breeders' Cup Challenge Series.
  • Race 5: Bluestocking (Rossa Ryan/Ralph Beckett) won the $5.5 million (U.S. estimate) Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. This was the first win in the race inaugurated in 1920 for the jockey and trainer but a record-setting seventh win for Juddmonte (Prince Khalid Abdullah), the owner. The race is billed as Europe's premier middle-distance race.

Belmont at Aqueduct (New York):
  • Handle: $9.3 million.
  • Race 2: Raging Sea (Flavien Prat/Chad Brown) won the Grade 2 $250,000 Beldame Stakes by a head at the imposing odds of 1-to-9. The Curlin filly, one of Brown's best, has won five graded stakes in her career.
  • Race 6: Scythian (Junior Alvarado/Bill Mott) was sent off 11-to-1 but got an ideal ride to win the $200,000 Grade 2 Miss Grillo Stakes. This is a Breeders' Cup Challenge Series race.
  • Race 8: Abientot (Dylan Davis/Mark Casse) won her first try in a graded stakes to secure to the $175,000 Grade 3 Matron Stakes.
  • Sister and Brother Act: Katie Davis and Dylan Davis won consecutive races. Dylan is the meet's leading rider with 19 wins. He has become a steadying presence.
  • Brad Cox: He his hitting at 40% this meet. He is third in wins behind Chad Brown and Linda Rice.
Keeneland (Kentucky):
  • Card: Two Breeders' Cup Challenge Series races that completed the 10-race card.
  • Race 3: Zealous Moon (Jaime Torres/Riley Mott) won this MSW at 49-to-1 and the victory was a perfectly timed finish by the rider.
  • Race 6: Like a Saltshaker (Chris Emigh/Brittany Vanden Berg) gave the husband-wife jockey-trainer combo a rare win as the favorite at a Kentucky track. The duo has a high success rate in Illinois but to have a favorite win at Keeneland has to be a fulfilling moment.
  • Race 8: Governor Sam (Paco Lopez/George Weaver) gave the jockey his 4,000th career victory. and it came in the $250,000 Indian Summer Stakes.
1728303201236.png

  • Race 9: Idiomatic (Florent Geroux/Brad Cox) is a superstar and she romped by more than 10 lengths to win the $600,000 Grade I Spinster Stakes. The 5-year-old Curlin mare has never missed the board with a 17 12-3-2 and nearly $4 million in earnings which includes five Grade I victories. In her past 11 starts, a;; graded stakes, she is a bewildering 9-2-0. This is a Breeders' Cup Challenge Series race.
  • Race 10: Minaret Station (Cristian Torres/William Walden) won the Grade 2 $350,000 Bourbon Stakes with a powerful late-kick at 38-to-1. This is a Breeders' Cup Challenge Series race.

Santa Anita (California):
  • Phil D'Amato trained both graded stakes winners. He had four stakes the past two days.
  • Race 3: Mawu (Antonio Fresu/Bob Baffert), a very striking $500,000 2-year-old filly by Blame, was solid in a debut performance. Baffert has yet another potential star.
  • Race 4: Thought Process (Hector Berrios/Phil D'Amato) won the Grade 3 $100,000 Surfer Girl Stakes.

  • Race 8: Iron Man Cal (Antonio Fresu/Phil D'Amato) was put up to victory via DQ to win the Grade 1 $150,000 Zuma Beach Stakes in what will be known as a killer for some or thriller for others. It was otherwise 3-across-the-wire but the original winner had veered and that was cause for the removal. D’Amato said Iron Man Cal “was kind of like the male version of Thought Process” in terms of their brief racing histories and both sired by Collected. Iron Man Cal is being considered for a Breeders' Cup entry.

Laurel (MD) has a brilliant card on Saturday. Hopefully the weather cooperates. I am going to miss this track, for years and even decades my favorite.

The Breeders' Cup Challenge Series, which began in December, concludes with two races at Ascot (England) on October 19. They are the only remaining races on the schedule for automatic entries issued to winners.

Thistledown (OH) has carded for Friday, Oct.11. That could be a makeup date, perhaps for Sep. 25. The website for the track shows Oct. 10 as the original closing day for 2024.

since this year's edition of the breeders cup is being held in del mar i decided to check out all the races from 2017. irad ortiz wins with a horse that pays $130. instead of breaking his maiden at a msw race good magic does that by winning the juvenile. lots of good horses running and getting tired real early, seemingly like they didn't even train at all leading up to their races. or could be due to already long arduous campaigns and/or not taking to the track surface. wild stuff,
