I barely saw Mancini this year, but when I did, a few things stood out: good size, solid physicality, very good skating. I have no idea what he tops out as but he's interesting.

He's been pretty much a stay at home minute eating shutdown defenseman for Nebraska-Omaha which has been a pretty good college program.....ranked 11th in the nation this year and made it to the final 16. He's not shown a lot of offense at least so far.
He has a large frame 6'4 220 lbs. or about and skates really well. Doesn't take too many pm's. They're not always super exciting but steady defenders can and do make the NHL. When they do they usually have reasonable cap numbers.

Both Mancini and Laba were not very popular picks in the 2022 draft. They've both become very legitimate prospects.

Chmelař, Rempe and Edström picks were criticised for picking players that "weren't even ranked". Especially with late picks, I've learned to just wait 2-3 years before complaining about the selections
The only issue I have is when they draft guys that are 20 years or older like Virta and Lakatoš in 2017 for instance. But other than that, late picks are random throws at a dartboard. You just don't know.

Yeah, this is very true. Most of the kids outside of the first 2-3 rounds of the draft, I don't know enough about to have an informed opinion, and I think that's true for most. Actually, I think most people even here at HF don't know enough to have an informed opinion about any of the prospects. It's just based on what they've read and they have no firsthand knowledge. That's not a criticism of anyone, because watching prospects that your team doesn't own can be boring, I get it. If I look back 10 years, there are really only 2 picks that I was highly critical of off the bat. One was Olof Lindbom, and it had nothing to do with Lindbom himself. He was an okay selection if they wanted a goalie. It was about who was still left and also about taking a goalie that early at that stage of our organization's development. The other one was Simon Kjellberg, which we don't need to rehash.
Anyway, patience is a virtue with these guys. Most guys never make it, and guy taken in the middle- and late-rounds are always going to be longshots. People need to just wait and see what happens.

Credit where credits due. I poopoo'd the pick... there was a number of people singing his praises last season. He's been impressive!
His profile wasn't very interesting. IIRC not many people mentioned his skating as a strength, so he was just an older guy that was big and maybe could become a defensive defenseman (not en vogue at the moment).
When I saw him that first year after we drafted him, I was like, oh, well, he can skate at least. And then last year his skating was a definite plus. So then you had a big guy that can skate well and can also move the puck around a little bit. That's a lot more interesting.
To be fair, he made a lot more progress than most guys who are drafted at that spot ever make.

Yup, last year was the first I got a bit interested in him. Saw a game with jim before he joined Hartford and then a few more there. From the recent past keep getting some Ryan (?) Graves vibes.

I know the size and skating pops with Mancini, but I’m honestly most impressed with his poise and decision making.
That first pre-season game against the baby-Bruins, you could tell he was scanning the ice and timing his retrievals in the corner to arrive about 50/50 with the incoming forechecker to give himself a better chance of actually winning the puck. You see Fox do it a lot and he usually comes out with the puck and makes a simple 3ft pass out of danger, as opposed to Schneider and Lindgren who usually just sprint to the corner to get on the puck as fast as they can…..only to get plastered from behind by the forechecker and letting the other team get set up in the zone.
Probably solving in your own end is usually the biggest hurdle for younger defenseman against veteran players with grown-ass-man strength, and Mancini would be tangled up in the corner and suddenly pop out with the puck on his blade and make a simple pass up the ice.
Nice to have a prospect where the toolbox is proportional to the tools for once.
