I haven’t had very much negative to say about Rod. As others say, he is who he is, sometimes to his own detriment.

This is one of the only times I’m bristling against it. I can appreciate how loyal he is to vets after how he was treated and how that endears him to the team. We can grumble about how the PP is run.

But in a game 5, on home ice, up 3-1, against a Devils team that might be down another 2 dmen depending on game time decisions, there is zero better time to introduce Nikishin to the lineup if you want to see what he has in the least pressure situation that could harm the team if you are interested in him playing for you later on in the playoffs…

Give a bonus perk to a new dad who is likely sleep deprived… give Robinson the night off and play 11-7…Robinson has been effective. It’s not a negative against him. Frame it as a positive and the perk is you get to see Nikishin on the ice with our team before the games really start to mean more in round 2 and beyond. There is no reason to not play 11-7 as a further reduction in risk to allow him to get in a game a d still ice a series closing roster...

If he doesn’t play tonight it’s a mistake on the coach’s part. Brindy has made them in the regular season and in the playoffs in recent years. We can love him as our coach and acknowledge he isn’t perfect. I believe this is his latest mistake if Nikishin doesn’t play tonight. Our media are super nice to our team. I would never want it to be like the viper pit the crazy idiots are in big markets. But anywhere else and there would have been many of the same essential questions posed with slightly different wording about why he isn’t in tonight.

It only gets more difficult from here and higher risk to just throw him out there in case of an injury... let's see what the kid has...

If we don't play him tonight how long until the media starts salivating at a chance to trash Carolina and start "Nikishin dissatisfied / request a trade" rumors?

I mean, it's the bloody playoffs. Saying this is as low pressure is gets means nothing because it's all pressure. You put him out there, the Devils slog it up being hurt, get a few breaks, you get goalied, maybe even the rookie makes the costly mistake, and suddenly you're headed back to Jersey for a game 6. That puts you in a dangerous position with regards to possibly finding yourself in a game 7 where "anything can happen" as they say. If Rod thinks this is the best way to wrap up this series win, I can't really blame him for it and mark it as some grand mistake.

Catching the game in Lake Lure this evening. She might be down but she’s not out. #gocanes

This is the NHL playoffs. RBAs only job is to win tonight’s game. Not get a guy in in case he needs him later. Guys like Burns and Staal need all the rest they can get, Freddie obviously isn’t healthy, and every extra game you play increases the likelihood you lose and people get hurt.

It should come as no surprise, but I can tell you that a few guys are already dealing with injuries that haven't been disclosed

I don’t see how anyone can say this is a low pressure game and the best opportunity to try a new player out.

It’s the effing playoffs. You can close out a series. It can blow up in your face if you don’t. Don’t look the injury gift horse in the mouth and mess with the lineup.

Burns isn’t coming out for anything. He’s the first pair RD, whether anyone likes it or not. Even if Nikishin is great from game one that’s not something Rod would ever do.

The comparison to Makar is unfair in that the Avs didn’t have as good a d group as we do. Not as healthy either. They needed the help. It wasn’t just because he was a badass prospect that he got in.

I also disagree that Ghost isn’t a good ppqb and that he hasn’t been good this playoff. I think he’s one of our better d in the playoffs. He has no problem stepping up to try and make a big play. Hes a great puck mover that doesn’t always get the pts for it.
